Hindsight hasn't been kind. When you look at it while knowing what happened to 3, it's clear that that was just a continuation of what had already begun in 2.
It also probably ought to have been a side-game instead of an entry in the main series. The only thing that really made sense as an actual sequel to 1 was the DLC. The main story would have been better off with a different protagonist. In the beginning of the game Shepard dies and the Normandy gets blown up. But you immediately get resurrected, given a Normandy 2, have most of the same crew, and recruit or meet all of the old companions, so the whole thing was a complete waste of time that served only to force Shepard into being the protagonist of a story it didn't make sense for him to be protagonist of.
All that said, it's still not an unenjoyable game. I had fun.

The combat and lvling system had some depth to it, you could set up your NPC's AI to do your bidding rather well, it had some fun classes and interesting combinations. The main story was okay with a few quests and set pieces being much better than others and no companion character was so bad that they stood out Alistair is arguable, but he still had his moments. Morrigan and French bitch were okay waifu material
It had its fair share of boring filler quests, they really tried to milk you with the DLC and the voice acting was hit or miss.

Which of the two games is better depends on what you're looking for.
KotOR 1 was a Star Wars game. KotOR 2 was a game set in the Star Wars universe. 1 was well-defined and had a very clear vision, while TSL felt muddled, and not just because it was incomplete.
TSL deliberately rejected the spirit of what I imagine when I think "Star Wars", and while their deconstruction was interesting and made for an enjoyable game, it's reasonable to prefer KotOR 1 for playing it straight.
It's ironic, since in the other major case of "Obsidian outdid them with an incomplete game", part of what made their take better was that it was closer to the original material.

There was a very old MMO who's name I forgot where you could play as a straight up dragon, ravage towns, PVP with human characters, or even protect towns as a guardian. That shit is gold. No one does shit like that anymore.
If you have a fantasy game, make all these cool monsters and never get to play as one? Missed opportunity. And aside from that, monsters are nearly always something tragic, not just a threat or an obstacle. A pack of lizardmen attacking a town could be because they're out of food because of a disease spread by humans inadvertently chopping down the wrong tree, A monster turning out to be a mother protecting her young, a cursed human turning into a beast, a monster becoming aware of itself and struggling against it's instincts, if you rule out a character type all you really have is humans, and boy oh boy does that get generic in a fantasy setting.
If everything's the same with no deviance in character, then there's no reason to care about anything. You need the grotesque to give the beautiful something to fight. You need conflict within a character, you need monsters. I mean why the fuck WOULDN'T you want to play as something different once in a while?

This is broadly true, KOTOR2 suffers from it's missing sections and the squalid ending but has the best character in SW evarrr so it's kind of hard to bash it, though it makes for a dissonant feeling while playing it, so much care into the story and voices but such a hackjob to finish on. You feel the care and time poured into Nar Shadarr and then see everywhere else lacking it.
1 at least was a complete title with a decent twist (the first time around), the story got a proper run, had potential for drama, dug around some nooks and crannies of the EU and added a lick or two what with the Tuskens and their origins. Telos was suicide inducing, granted and it had some gamebreaking bugs but it was a damn sight prettier and left a better taste in the mouth.
Replaying 1 was a compulsion, replaying 2 was a more of a chore.

I'm with you there. Part of the multitude of reasons I liked the ps4 Shadow of the Beast was that the main character knows he's a monster, but he doesn't mope about it. He instead just uses every trick in his arsenal to kick ass against anything in his way. Sure you get the option to have an ending where you get turned back into a human, but if you've been paying any attention, you realize that shit in this world is terrible and you need "the Beast" in order to fight it back and the true ending has the MC forego becoming human in order to serve as a protector.
