Yeah, I wouldn't say they should be immediately written off because they didn't find an audience, as that can stem from poor marketing, poor release frame, lack of accessibility, or "professional" tier reviewers calling it bad. But sometimes there is a truth that a game wound up more or less unplayed because it was indeed shit. Obviously one should want to ask if the games people are posting in those threads are worthwhile by their own opinions (though that requires more effort on the other person's end than just dropping a name or image).

Worse for you. Better for people who want autonomy with their multiplayer experience. With a server list you have to look for the game you want to play and decide which is worth joining taking ping into account. With a matchmaking system you select a gametype and wait, then the game does the rest for you. Also ranks are hard to maintain with no matchmaking system, so playing against people in your own skill bracket is another reason for matchmaking.

Overall both ways to play have their uses. I say use a server list for when you want to find specific, persistent game modes and don't care about skill level

Anyone know about emulators? I'm trying to set up a ps1 emulator for a friend, who has an older laptop with Windows 10. We tried PCSX-Reloaded, which runs every game like a dream on my old-ass Windows 7 PC, but most games aren't working properly for him. They go to the title screen and then the video freezes, though the sound continues and the game is clearly still "running", we can press buttons and the game accepts input but the screen/graphics is locked up.

Would another emulator work better? I can't find anything online about troubleshooting this particular shit.

If a dungeon crawler in the style of strange journey or etrian odyssey had a roster of recruitable story characters instead of 'generics,' each with 3+ alternate viable 'builds,' would that ruin the 'magic' of that genre? The main thing I'm worried about is the loss of tension caused by permanent death of characters, which would not be able to be implemented in such a game without gimping the character interactions (see Final Fantasy Tactics, once you recruit a unit they're basically a non-factor in the story).

Nein. The way cloning works is that the genes in the egg are destroyed and the DNA from the parent is injected inside. The only foreign DNA is the mitochondrial DNA, which is in the egg and doesn't pass onto men. His only genes are from Big Boss and EVA was just the surrogate mother, which means nothing.

If it's the DNA from a sperm cell alone, then it's not an actual clone and Snake would be Big Boss' son. If he were actually a clone, it would be Big Boss' DNA put into a donor egg cell with its internal DNA removed. Mednaffe. I've tried all of the others and they were both unstable and unintuitive. Mednaffe is dead simple, doesn't crash, and works how you would expect. The only flaw is that you have to edit the mednafen.cfg manually to change a number of settings that theoretically could have been exposed in the launcher, but all of the other Mednafen launchers have the same problem and are usually even worse about it.

The most glaring omission was that I didn't see a way to select the analog sticks for your controls without editing the config file. Mednaffe seems to want to set up a digital gamepad rather than a DualShock for PSX. I haven't tried playing any games that require them yet but I don't think it will be hard to set up analog controls.

Other than that, mostly some internal system-specific settings that you don't need to mess with. Mednaffe exposes most settings that most people care about through the GUI.

However once you have things set up the way you like, I recommend you read this to reduce input lag

enable this to eliminate stuttering on disc reads

and disable horizontal overscan (at least for PSX) because the way mednaffen implements aspect ratio correction causes overscan to fuck with it

Well you'll want to set up shaders and scaling the way you prefer but that can be done within Mednaffe. I haven't tried any Saturn games yet, everything I said should apply but there might be more things that I don't know about. The documentation page has subpages for each console where you can learn more.
