I pirated it anon and gave it a go, its really not that fun. I played without a wiki (like you should) and tried learning mechanics but it was just retarded. Farm mechanics are pretty much broken and what'd youd imagine would be THE IDEAL source of food generation. Of course they arent. Not to mention theres nothing to do once your village is set up and going. Its like factorio in that regard except you dont need austism in banished. Actually, factorio has more content than banished too. Really its a shit game.

There are a number of mods but none that really make the game all that much better. A game that has no purpose is not much of a game.

I don't know why but I want to compare Thea: The Awakening to Banished. Thea is a much better game for people management.

It's highly dependent on the crop, the climate, and how you lay out your farms. Planting a crop that requires a long growing season in a cold climate is obviously going to cause you to lose a lot of your harvest to freezing.

Fishing + gathering / hunting in a plant only forestry area is the way to go. Get the forest to max density then fire the forestry worker until trees start to die of old age.

Its not helped by the fact that theres no splitting of food stock by the AI. One house can hold an entire supply hostage while others simply starve. The AI in this game is purely shit.

Fun game. The inevitable malthusian catastrophe is fun imo: all things must end, all civilisations topple, so it becomes about how long you can postpone judgment day. The further you kick the can down the road the harder the world-ending famine will hit.

And yeah, the AI goes to dogshit when the population gets too large. It works well enough early game when it counts. I actually like the way it goes to shit late game. As anon mentioned above, you get quirky behaviour like some houses hoarding all the food. Villagers assigned to jobs so far away from their houses that they spend 80% of their time commuting. Villagers getting resources from markets and stockpiles so far away that by the time they get home with food they need to make another trip for firewood. Inefficiencies like that, which would spell doom for a 12 person village, but become a mere statistic in an 800 person township.

I see a ton of posts complaining about the AI and mechanics but frankly this game just doesn't have enough content to sustain itself. The developer seems to have just given up at some point on trying to add anything more to the game, and it only takes a few hours to really experience everything it has to offer. You can autistically try to make your civ survive for as long as possible but unlike something like Dwarf Fortress, there's really not anything to do after a certain point except just sit and watch your villagers piddle around in circles.

It's a problem with all of these fucking indie civ management games, they're as barebones on content as they can possibly be and no one bothers to think about what's supposed to engage people once they've got all their buildings set up for maximum efficiency. I've been playing Kingdoms and Castles for quite a few hours and it's basically the same shit, just slightly less obnoxious.
