I know the basics:
- participants have to register in a google doc I'll make.
- participants will then need to download DVpet which is a java based digivice that is free and has like 600 digimon built in
- participants will have 2 weeks(real time) to then raise their monster of choice.
- the monster must be posted on the day of the tournament and must be 2 weeks old.
- the winner of the tournament gets up to $60 for games or game of their choice for any system.
Unfortunately this is where the idea falls apart.
While you can battle each with dvpet.
It does so by IP addresses.
A possible remedy is that all trainers send me their digipet and I create a test environment wherein I can force them to fight eachother.
Any ideas though?

Well three part answer.
Part one is the egg you pick in the beginning should be with you up until the tournament.
Part two is because people can ingress and those are so OP that it would become unfun. And if we allowed Jogress digimon there would be very little variety.
Finally it allows me to get a count of how many players we will have and let's me create a good bracket

It's deep as fuck, but you can mostly understand each individual entry on its own. Things seem unrelated, but when you look closer, it's actually all very related. There's a lot of stuff that is not quite explicitly stated but still neat if you notice it. I like lore that you have to work for. It's not shoved in your face, but if you look at every entry in order, it all adds up. To do away with all the continuity kills my interest. Which is why I stopped watching the anime back when Frontier happened, because two reboots in a row killed all my interest. But then I found out about all the Japanese exclusive stuff that ties it together, and that made it interesting again.
Also, I don't know which retcons you're referring to, but retcons are not inherently bad. Retcon means retroactive continuity, new info about stuff that happened earlier in the story that changes how you view those previous events. Too many people here use it to just mean continuity error, or a new piece of continuity completely overwriting a previous thing. That's just a contradiction, not retroactive continuity.

Did you watch Adventure? People like Tamers but Adventure is also very acclaimed.
If you watched all the first three animes, Frontier is next, and it's actually okay, but it's another reboot with even less connection to Tamers than Tamers has to Adventure. Also the kids turn into Digimon instead of having partners but honestly that doesn't really make a big difference. If you're actually bored by Tamers you might be bored here as well. But it's much more lighthearted so maybe you'll like that.
I recommend the manga, Digimon Adventure V-Tamer 01. The main guy is Taichi but it's an alternate Taichi from a different universe. Anyway it's really good and crosses over with Adventure, Tamers, and Frontier.

Honestly I'm surprised you say that about Tamers, since that one is probably the one most focused on characterization. Adventure does more worldbuilding and lore stuff, though the characters are a highlight and their growth is heavily tied into the actual plot. Frontier is meh and I have a hard time saying you'll like it if you didn't like Tamers, unless you just like a more lighthearted style. V-Tamer 01 felt pretty DBZ with more focus on training and a lot of cool fights, but has a lot of neat lore stuff too. Granted a lot of it doesn't pay off until even after Frontier.
