The most unimaginative trash I've played.
It had the potential to become the best of its kind out there, but then when you look at the current state the game is in, you realize it's nothing but a botched attempt at riding on its predecessors.
Want cool new features that would actually improve gameplay?
Forget it. You'll get re-skinned old ships, stolen ideas from other games, botched updates, constant nerfs, shallow marketing and outright lying fan base.
The echo chamber of the official forums chastises any- and everyone who dares say anything other than praising the latest patch or LARPing.
Let alone the massive incompetence of the software developers and game designers at FDev. I worked there. It's filled with brits, pajeets and whatever they could find, most of them incompetent. The competent ones were shunned and ideas are trashed. The data analyst team focuses on how to catch cheaters instead of finding features players actually LIKE and building upon them. The designers focus on addictive and time-consuming gamepaly features to make sure your average dad/millennial gets caught in an endless loop of "maybe if I do this I'll have fun" or "maybe the issue is with me, not the game". Textbook gambling psychology, the same shit casinos use. And the player base just eats it up like it's candy. They keep making excuses "this game is not for everybody", but then relentlessly shill you to try and play it. My favorite is comparing it to Euro Truck (a game that does NOT even want to hide its true nature), saying how its cool for trucking, and that somehow _you_ have to acquire the taste for the game (you scrub!).
And don't even let me begin on "features".
The AI to this day cheats. They just dialed back by how much. They tried and massively failed to make AI competitive just through sheer skill, so they have to resort to giving them a demigod mode.
The missions are a joke. Still underpays actual skill and effort, yet massively overpays _time_ invested. You think taking on ELITE enemies would earn you anything other than a repair bill? Ha. Good one. And of course if you find anything lucrative within the game's boundaries (intended features, not exploiting) it gets SWARMED by everyone because of how painful it is to gain credits. And then gets removed within a few days.
Both the Guardians and the Engineers came out as half-assed solutions. Neither offer _anything_ to anyone unwilling to grind brainlessly for literally days. Want to experience the story-line? Good luck finding things in trailer videos and things hidden in a game area the size of the Milky Way. And your reward? A chance to read a text. Yes. They have spent millions for something you could read in a book.
The Engineers? The useful ones take so much grinding and repetitive gameplay it's not even funny. And because of the game's MASSIVELY overbalanced nature they're not even worth it that much!
JFC, it got long, but I'm pissed by how delusional players get about an objectively low quality game.
TL;DR: do not buy if you want to play a quality game. Get X3 if you want big ships and fleets and an economy that IS actually dynamic. Or wait for X4 and shit on that. YOUR time is more valuable than to waste it on a game that can be completed in an hour. Spend the time you'd spend on it reading a book, trust me, it's more entertaining.
