The even more ironic part is that a space game with more players should be doable. Mechwarrior Living Legends was built on the original Cryengine and runs servers with 32 players just fine. That includes the giant robots and their animations and particle effects and missiles zooming around the map, as well as planes, tanks and infantry in power armor, as well as all the terrain and foliage and shadows. Rendering a game in space is extremely easy because you don't need to render terrain, foliage, and usually very simple shadows. Meanwhile Shart Connoisseur can barely run at all on Amazon's updated version of Cryengine because artists paid six figure salaries had nothing to do but make space toilets and the dumb fuck programmers thought "Why wait until later?! Just render everything now!"

Oh ok so Blizzard indeed did it before them but the regular PROMOTIONAL event is perfectly free, you basically just pay for DLC and live stage (of what I'm assuming are mostly E-Sports matches) even physical goodies.
