This may be one of the fastest developing 3D emulators that has ever hit the scene, as the fag in the video puts it. We've gone from roughly 6 frames a second to around nearly 40 in the span of less than 8 days, along with rendering being slightly ironed out.
I'm more than confident we're going to be able to play bingbing wahoo in around 3 months.

And Nintendo seems to be all onboard with opening the floodgates to turn the Switch into Steam Greenlight 2.0.
What the fuck is there even to emulate? Splat2 and Mario Lopez Oddesey? Maybe Octopath. Everything else is either shit, emulated elsewhere, or available on PC. I don't get it.

According to my wishlist…Xenoblade 2 is the only current game on the system worth emulating. And, looking at the library list, there isn't anything else. Well, there are the "definitive versions" of games like Hyrule Warriors and Pokken Tournament, but those are still ports and I'm getting tired of having to buy a whole new system if I want a "complete" packaged version of a game. Admittedly, I found this acceptable for games up through the 5th gen because consoles were taking technological leaps with each new system, but now all the complete edition of a game means is that you don't have to pay for the DLC (Or, the "essential" DLC because 2K and KT do release a complete edition of a game and then have even more DLC for the customer to buy).

The OS is pretty much the 3DS one (which is why the Switch security got backported), the hardware is a whole different stuff though, CPU is a more recent ARM variant than the 3DS but the GPU goes from some cut down custom bullshit to a straight up regular Maxwell arch GPU
the hardware is very well documented you can even get full devkits for pretty cheap straight from Nvidia (they obviously don't include the switch stuff but that's still a good start to get an idea of what you're dealing with)
The one thing that isn't easy is that the graphics API is a black box, but you can avoid that by just emulating the GPU at a lower level which isn't actually as hard as it seems
NGC/Wii/WiiU on the other hand are much straighter upgrades of each other (although you can argue going from bare metal and gimped GPU to something with an OS and fully programmable shaders is quite a leap)

NISA promised to do a simultaneous PC/PS4/Vita release and do a french localization, those were the biggest reasons. NISA also potentially underbid other localization companies to get the rights.

How much more different/powerful is the Switch than the Wii U? Since we have plenty of ports to go by maybe there's a way to roughly see how the Switch versions compare to their Wii U counterparts. Then we can probably use this to make emulation more accurate or even get some Switch games working with Wii U, albeit with some downscaling of graphics and other side effects.
I'm going full sunk cost fallacy with the wii u so not too serious about that last bit
1829b5 No.15395548

>How much more different/powerful is the Switch than the Wii U?
That's pretty complicated, on the CPU side it really depends on how good you are at making multithreaded stuff and if you can take advantage of the ARM instruction set, If you can do that well the Switch CPU is better, if you can't the WiiU CPU might be slightly better still
The GPU is straight up just better in every way, provided it's running in docked mode and even then the TX1 GPU is just really fucking good

>>Why the hell did falcom give YSVIII to NISA?
I would assume NISA being cheaper to hire and having a faster turn around (which comes at a cost of its own). Most Japanese companies probably just see western profits as a bonus on top of their local one, so as long as it still sells decently, they don't care that much about accuracy. Occasionally a hand can be forced post-release, but that doesn't necessarily mean the outcome will be good.
>Do you think they will ever hire a competent company to rerelease it?
Well, an extended port or something down the line to a next gen system (IE: one its not on already) offers a chance, but I wouldn't bet on it. And even if it does change hands, chances are the company would rather speed up turn around and buy the scripts from NISA than retranslate all on their own. Takes a notoriously (as in even rival companies have been aware of their reputation, not just fans) bad localization to prompt an official, full retranslation, like Muramasa and Nep Rebirth Vol 1 saw, as a valid perk to playing a new release, but even then that's no guarantee (BoF II has a notoriously garbage official English script, but Capcom had not one fuck to give about fixing it in the GBA port). Also in some cases the meme community that will whine loudly at attempts to give a game a script that's more translation than localization, which even if they don't get their way at the start, can cause problems down the line (as they did for Nep Rebirth Vol 2 and 3).

Anyways, if you want examples of games that are the reason why people want an Xbox emulator, to start with, there's the several dozens of those multi-platform titles released on the Xbox that were superior because they didn't have to deal with the PS2's limited hardware and the GC's limited storage (And, this is back when some PC version of games were sometimes completely different from their console counterparts, look up Spider-Man 2 and GRAW), in addition to how some Xbox versions of games received special bonus like with Fatal Frame and Burnout 2. As for exclusives, there's

Thank. You. So. Much.
"Trash game" is very subjective. A while ago someone was hunting down copies of bad american erotic fmv games on PC with hilariously bad writing, and every step in the way he found obstacles. PC Gamer (for politically correct) ran a hit piece on HIM for daring to hunt and preserve that game, as if he was a mentally deranged psycho so dangerous they had to cut the chat conversation with him. They referenced one of their old reviews for the game (that was apparently an infamously bad game) why no one should see its badness for themselves.
The underlying idea seems to be that some games can be just disappeared from the mainstream with no chance to try them on your own, but you should take game journalism's word that it was always bad and move on.
hardcoregaming101, a site who rebranded itself as a sjw retrovidya metoo operation, edited a lot of their articles, like Valis' from "good platformers on tg-16, nice boobs" to be all about how it's bad unplayable sexist trash. Notice unplayable. It's now a kusoge just like those bad porn games. And so on.
Know what else is bad? Bayonetta 2. God Hand. Idolmasters. Super Noah's Ark.
Never, ever ask why it's bad. It's bad and no one should preserve it. Or be allowed to preserve it. Or play it. Listen and believe. See a pattern?
Trash games have uses besides documenting history and nostalgia. Often have debug symbols left in, fingerprints of programmers that did more notable things, incomplete prototype code that can make another game better, the game has modding potential to be made better…
Don't want to preserve or play trash yourself? All power to yours. Someone else does? Not your damn business.

That is literally the entire stated purpose of LibRetro: "Emulator devs, don't bother with a frontend, we'll take care of that for you!"
Except up until just months ago, the only actively developed LibRetro frontend was RetroArch's astonishingly retarded XMB-knockoff.
If we were talking about any other emulator on PC (SNES9x, Dolphin, MAME, MESS) I'd agree, I'd even go further and posit the typical emulator's UI and overall UX is superior to 99% of native PC or console games.
Also, never, EVER forget that this years-long unforgivable state of affairs wasn't the result of laziness or incompetence, but intentional autistism by fanatical nintoddlers:
https://www.reddit.com/r/emulation/comments/5dr4ip/having_so_many_problems_with_retroarch/
>It might only not map out perfectly with an N64 or Sega Saturn/Megadrive pad but honestly, those gamepads are dated and history has proven that only the PS4/Xbone/PS3/Xbox 360 gamepad model has survived the test of time. Therefore, we go with the gamepad that is used by 90 to 95% of all gamers right now, not some ultra-niche group that is using an original N64 or Saturn pad.
>We want it to resemble a game console environment, not a UI for a PC game. At no point in time do we want to break this illusion. We also want that same UI to be seamless across all platforms that RetroArch is on. This is also deliberate. You'll have to simply accept that we are different, because that's how it's going to stay forever, and for good reason.
>Doing it the way PC games do it or Steam is stupid and retarded, and I will forever claim that. I want a console game machine-like experience, and not to get the feeling I'm just sitting behind a desktop computer. That's why the entire UI is fashioned like it is, because that seamless experience has to stay like that, and at no point in time should something lame happen that drags you out of that seamless experience.
>This is a hot-button topic at this point precisely because you guys refuse to accept that we are doing it different for a reason and you guys insist on an archaic UI paradigm that we don't put any stock in. Accept that we are different, if you want something else, feel free to write your own libretro frontend where you cobble together some lame WIMP windows and string them together. I'm sure you'd consider that an 'improvement', and I'm sure for all the wrong reasons as well.

The censoring isn't even that egregious, and the rest of the game is way better. There are actual enemies in the overworld in the new game, the zombie section has more zombies to shoot, you don't have to stand in place in thepiss section, and the multiplayer is good enoughtobe its own game. If you go back to playing the original on Xbone, aiming in first person mode has you strafing with the right control stick and aiming with the left, because the controls were ported over straight over the N64 controller.
The remake isn't perfect - inferior to the original at times, even - but it makes up for it in so many minute ways that I would say that most people who prefer the original haven't played the remake.

Man, how I HATE that sorry excuse for a developer now. He thinks the opposite way as anyone with a clue about proper user interface design. When I'm on a PC, I expect programs to look like PC programs. I expect menus and shortcuts and whatever else, used in a globally consistent manner. I expect developers to show a modicum of respect for the system's user interface guidelines.
I have no problem using Kega, Snes9x, Dolphin, Demul… even Stella, which is not really standard but it's designed in a mostly understandable way, I can tolerate that. But RetroArch, fuck that shit. I just can't use it. I could never figure out how that goddamn thing works. I tried, it was a miserable user experience. Considering the primary goal is to run on pretty much anything and PCs are only a small part of that (not to mention one of the goal was also to have it usable on a PC with just a contrller plugged in) It's perfectly reasonable that you wouldn't want your program to look like a PC program because that doesn't work on any platform outside of PC.

Configuration and play aren't the same thing. Playing console games with a gamepad makes sense, because gamepads and the console UIs they're part of are designed for playing games. PC WIMP GUIs, and the mice/keyboards they're used with, on the other hand, were designed specifically for reviewing and configuring settings. As a result, something that can be done in seconds using a WIMP GUI takes minutes fumbling through XMB menus on a gamepad/remote/etc.
The goal should be to provide the best possible UI for every part of a task. For emulators, that means a WIMP GUI for deep initial configuration, and a gamepad UI for play… Plus options for keyboard/mouse gameplay and gamepad configuration, to handle edge-cases.
>PCs are only a small part of that
The ability to configure software that will run on a set-top or cellphone, using a PC, is actually a major convenience feature.
7665ab No.15517367

>XMB menus
Forget about that shit, this was never relevant to the original idea of RA and was only added as a compromise because people couldn't handle RGUI, anything that isn't RGUI is a compromise or an external project that became associated with RA..
Additionally people complaining about XMB fail to realize that by the time it became default there was a regular 3rd party lightweight WIMP launcher available
>The goal should be to provide the best possible UI for every part of a task
And the original task RA set for itself was to have an unified program on every platform, WIMP GUIs aren't compatible with that because most platforms RA run on don't support what would be required to make it work well, in fact only PCs (and x86 tablets technically) and ARM SBCs can support it well (and it's arguable that most people running RA on an SBC would care for a WIMP GUI since they're more likely to use it like a game console that boots into RA directly and only has a controller plugged in)
>The ability to configure software that will run on a set-top or cellphone, using a PC
What?
The only way I can see that being a thing is if you're implying that editing build config / configuration file is even remotely in the same realm as configuring a program through a WIMP GUI.

The menu structure and inputs for RGUI are completely identical to the XMB monstrosity, the only difference between the two is their appearance.
>there was a regular 3rd party lightweight WIMP launcher available
Launchers are far from the problem, if that was all I cared about, I could just generate symlinks in my filebrowser.

None of those ever got out of alpha, and NONE of them ever supported fully configuring any version of LibRetro's settings.
>What?
Think of the way desktop synchronization software has worked for years with smartphones/MP3 players/eReaders/PDAs/etc.. You can do data entry, make playlists, install and update software, set system preferences, etc. on a PC, then sync those settings to your mobile device. RetroArch should offer something similar.

>The menu structure and inputs for RGUI are completely identical to the XMB monstrosity
No they are not actually XMB has more separation and less info present on screen at any one time, it's also laggier because of the small delay when you navigate options in menus
>None of those ever got out of alpha, and NONE of them ever supported fully configuring any version of LibRetro's settings.
Skeletonkey which is the one I was referring to had pretty much anything you would need to touch.on a regular basis (backend drivers, input, video, audio, latency), granted it looks bad but then again it's a basic WIMP GUI made from default Windows style configuration dialog so that's to be expected
>RetroArch should offer something similar.
I'm unsure of the actual advantages of it though and I'm pretty sure you can already sync the ones that would be platform independent (mainly input remapping), emulation generally require hands on configuration with verification, outside of input confiuguration most of what you would do would be a stab in the dark unless you're doing configuration on multiple of the same hardware, but then you can just already sync config files by hand between those without having to rely on a PC
And I'm unsure of the real advantage if you're gonna configure it on your PC then sync onto your device when you have access to both at the same time

Nintendo was lazy as shit with the GBA, and built it around an off the shelf ARM7 processor, which was an common and well documented. The Yoshi's Story tech demo was dumped before the GBA launched, and someone wrote an emulator for it.
Apparently Nintendo never learns, because they made the exact same mistake with the Switch, which uses a standard Nvidia Tegra X1, which is another very common and well documented processor.

I don't get it. Why is the default switch retroarch video wrong. It did bug me when I compared my own screenshots, I only assumed the vertically stretched to be the correct one because _why_ would it be like this out of the box. I also checked on desktop - the shader does actually keep the aspect ratio and ONLY scales it down a bit. Whereas on the switch, as is evident in the screenshot, it changes and coincidentally "fixes" the aspect ratio. I'm so confused right now. I still want the shader to not scale down at all though, that would be amazing
