Ignoring Nintendo's recent faggotry for a second, could an Ice Climbers game/remake make it in this day and age? How would you re-imagine it? Open world? Survival simulator? You mean Dark Pit? That did spark some popularity to the point where he became his own character in the 3DS game. But how exactly would a villain even work in Ice Climbers? Closest thing they have is the Condor and he's just a dumb animal who seems to be on friendly terms with them now. Although the Polar Bear might work as a main villain or even a playable character in Smash, but he's too chill.

It is a dull game, but the concept has room for endless expansion. Intense survival mechanics, partial open world, exploration, quests, dozens of snow-loving animals and monsters to hunt while foraging for food, relationship/dating sidequest between Popo and Nana (would it be taboo? Maybe but the japs would love it), redesigns, character expansions, it'd basically be a whole new game but with familiar characters that have a decently sized fanbase now which has grown more since their return in Ultimate.

Simple, tie it to the plot of the first game. Have it be that the Condor that stole food the first time around was actually owned by a savage rival tribe (the Condor or Bear tribe or something like that) that fucks with Popo and Nana's tribe in attempt to dominate them. Have them be animal tamers responsible for making the animals on the mountain go wild, or simply make them part of the quest that add to the survival mechanic. The tribe could be represented by evil counterparts for Popo and Nana, Nono and Papa or something, giving them a proper villain that would suit them well but have them be more savage with tribal masks and crudely-made animal fur coats. The game could even have some kind mountain climbing race side game available on the menu where you can play as Popo and Nana and the second player can play as the evil little niggers. But I'm just shooting partial blanks here, hence the whole point of the thread is to share ideas. Doesn't even have to be exclusive to Ice Climbers. It could cover other forgotten IPs like Starfy or F-Zero.

Why would you even need a central villain for a game about a couple of cutesy sisters climbing a mountain? In fact, the mountain would be the "antagonist" of the game.

As far as how the series would make a "comeback", make the game a 3D platformer in a similar manner to the pre-2013 Tomb Raider games and give it "resource gathering" elements (Because it would, unironically, be one of the few games where those mechanics wouldn't be out of place).

Steal how Catherine worked, and make it a multiplayer thing. Either a race or endurance to keep climbing a mountain. Throw in power-ups so the kids can make a come-back against skilled players. Maybe throw in a half-assed singleplayer to act as a tutorial.

Catherine even has some FGC/competitive presence, so you could push that angle to boot.

I've imagined for a while now, an Ice Climbers-like game that could work on 3DS. I thought about this before the Switch was a thing. It would feature an angled top-down camera perspective that would follow and involve platforming your way towards the screen upwards the mountains like in the original game. I tried to draw in Oekaki as basic as possible the sort of concept I'm talking about. On different platforms, there could be sorts of puzzles or challenges that could prevent your way from climbing upwards until you solve or complete them. There could also be some sort of mechanic where you have to switch between Ice Climbers on different levels in order to help one of them climb up to the other, or even on different sides of the mountain.

Imagine being able to take 2 Switch and lay them on a table like Super Mario Party and have the game automatically create a level / puzzle where you have to connect both sides of the mountain / screens by turning them and making a path in the game. Or even being able to use 2 Switch for the main part of the game where the camera will match one of the players. And if they're on the same level, they could even walk over to the other screen and the camera would still follow them correctly if they change levels / platforms.

Game can take place on one big expansive map instead of multiple levels. Igloos can be checkpoints where if you lose all 3 HP of both Popo or Nana you respawn (and lose lots of food). Well you can still progress with one ice-climber but it's impossible to go everywhere. You need to use food to revive the other ice-climber or return to camp.

Here's my concept for the latter, but seen in a 2D side view. The left and right represent 2 different Nintendo Switch and the top and bottoms are different layers or screens. The camera would be towards the ceiling of the next platform and as you climb, it too goes up towards the next platform. In order to cross screens, both of the characters need to be on the same vertical level of platforms. And when a character climbs upwards while the other one is on another side, the camera will follow that one upwards on whichever Switch the character is on. You could have puzzles like, Popo needs to pull a lever so an elevator can lift Nana up to the next platform towards a lever that will pull Popo up on his side.

Please let me know if anyone has difficulty understanding this or needs me to explain more.

Like one player gets to play as something like a nasty blizzard cloud trying to blow other players off the mountain, summoning ice, and whatnot without a top-down view but a full 3D view on the TV? Could have different modes to it. Like one where the first to the top wins, or trying to last as long as possible, or trying to defeat the blizzard cloud with your fellow Ice Climbers. This could an extremely fun couch multiplayer game if done correctly and with enough modes and variety to keep it interesting.

Just clone Spelunker Party but instead of going deeper into a cave system it's climbing mountains in different regions You can keep the same physics as the NES game and then have something like spelunker party's gear system give optional handicaps/gameplay changes. Then once a player conquers each mountain just thrown in a score attack mode and mountain randomization mode.

My favorite proposal so far is taking the physics of the old games and make it a puzzle platformer out of it. I'm proposing adding 3 hit points that replenish at checkpoints since points in modern games are worthless. As for food think of it as extra lives instead of hunger. Loose all your HP or fall off the mountain, you lose food. Run out of food and it's game over. You have to restart at the base of the mountain.

Come back from the mountain with the high score and lots of food then you can trade food and treasures for goodies like swag for your igloo or some other unlockable.

Sometimes it does just make sense for Nintendo to be this way. If you're Nintendo, and you're making a tennis game, and you can include recognisable characters to help sales, and give it a bit more character, there's no reason not to do that.

They do take the mentality too far sometimes. Dinosaur Planet should not have been a Starfox game. A lot of people weren't happy that the Mario 64 sequel was confined to a tropical island theme, and strapped a water gun to Mario's back, and the people who loved that direction are never going to see it again. Those are cases when you should do a new thing.

I have a saying. "Know what you can't do before you know what is possible." Make what you can, not what you want.

Physics of classic Ice climber have potential. Tweak that, then design the game based around that. You have a jump button, hammer button, a rope/piton button, and a torch button. We just made an entirely new Ice Climbers game by adding 2 more item buttons. Also with the weird movement physics they're surprisingly comfortable with a stick. Also with a natural addition of rope there is a new movement option: climbing.

And with this natural progression to more vertical momentum we can design more vertical concepts like slopes and slides. Maybe add mountain lakes and water as obstacles. Despite being just Ice Climbers with NES movement there's near limitless possibilities of game design.

Vertical arcade 2D platformer using both 3DS screens, with short levels and taking a page from platformers with impressive physics like Umihara Kawase and Gish. The standard levels are hand-crafted, but you can also tackle randomized variations. Two-player modes:

1. Using one system, and each player using one side of the controls.

2. Using one system, with players taking turns lasting a few seconds, and you can set up traps for the other player.

3. Playing simultaneously on two systems.

None of the three modes is explicitly co-op or competitive, you two just get a score together and also an individual score.

Most of the time they just throw darts at a list of game mechanics and try to squash them together in hopes it works.
