So this thread (>>15337904) got me thinking.

What are some other games, modern or historic, that accomplish some great technical feat?

The game in linked thread has an incredibly small file size for a decent-looking 3D game.

What about other games that were the first to introduce anti-aliasing?

Games that have the most physical objects interacting.

Games that were innovative with their graphics technologies used (SSAO in crysis)

Games that are exceptional in some technical way….

I thought Max Payne 3 was a great use of the RAGE physics engine and animation system.

I really wish more games used to to the extent that Payne 3 did.

Dragon Dogma's pawn AI, specifically how and what they learn, still boggles the mind

can't go wrong with mentioning FEAR, some of the things they do at this point aren't actually that technically impressive but no other games do it for some reason. the AI in that game is always held in high regard but I remember the developers saying it wasn't as smart as it seems they simply gave the AI more options to choose from creating more dynamic scenarios.

>I thought Max Payne 3 was a great use of the RAGE physics engine and animation system.

hit reactions were fantastic, unloading automatic fire into a guy made him into a blood fountain for just a moment and each bullet pushed him around a bit, it looked great. In later levels you just had to headshot every enemy though because they all wore heavy armor and reduced the fun of shooting legs out or getting body shots to see the ragdoll flail around a bit before entering full ragdoll

Yes. Shooting in Max Payne is exceptionally satisfying due to how Payne moves and how enemies respond.

If you ask me, it would've been fucking amazing, in anything that wasn't Max fucking Payne. The fact that Max moves so realistically and is locked into some kind of animation for everything incentivizes playing slowly and using cover, which really isn't the point of a Max Payne game. The fact that Max can hit a wall and flop out of bullet time realistically is also dogshit, because half of the places you fight in that game are super tight corridors or rooms cluttered with chest high cover. If I'm playing Max Payne I want to dive around like a maniac and do stylish shit, not slowly rumble around as a fat bald guy whose animations are way too fucking slow.

-S.T.A.L.K.E.R and it's A Life full of random encounters and A.I living their lives even on the background.

-Max Payne and it's genre defining TPG gameplay plus Bullettime mechanics

-System Shock 2 and it's blend of RPG and FPS

-Half Life A.I behaviour

-Super Mario 64 3D rendering

-Doom, all of it

Most of the classics people list reached some sort of technical or gameplay achievement OP.

I wish we saw more genre defining stuff.

>-Half Life A.I behaviour

what's unfortunate about half life is I feel a lot of games took the wrong influence from it, focusing on it's "one shot" run through the game and in-game exposition instead of what was actually fun. I will go as far to say half life 2 kinda sucks in this regard

The urban fighting in HL2 was fun.

The exploration points were fun, but there needed to be more. Somehow they made the world seem bigger.

The effectiveness of weapons made sense even if the weapons themselves were nonsensical.

Had they not been pussies and left the cremators and child workers it would have been more fun.

File: b444333029e025a⋯.mp4 (6.2 MB, 416x360, 52:45, Tales of Phantasia SFC OP ….mp4)

Tales of Phantasia managed to get not only voice acting (and not merely for combat either), but also a legible lyrical opening, to fit on a SFC cart (the ROM filesize on my computer reading as 6.3MB). Granted, it took pretty much the biggest carts on the market for the system and some black magic from WolfTeam (splitting the voicing into bits of tone that the game could reassemble into legible voiced lines, or something), but it's impressive for the time. Of course, depending on who you ask, one might say it only helped to further the bloat for development in an unnecessary way (games being voiced and having to budget for actors and licensing), and later versions of the game made a point to further increase the amount of voicing from the base (as well as give Chester his own seiyuu, rather than have Cress be talking to himself), but still.

Some of the beta weapons were much more interesting, like the "combine guard gun".

https://www.invidio.us/watch?v=Y8JzIxrCrso

The whole beta style is really cool. There's a mod called Dark Interval that's trying to restore the beta version, but it's a long ways off. They released a "part 1", but it's basically just the intro.

To be honest the child workers all grew up into the 20year olds by the time Gordon arrived in the current version. After all the Combine did what Jews could not yet total mandatory birth control of the goyim.

I'm gonna go with Dwarf Fortress.

For me, I haven't seen any game with such details and exploitative mechanics.
