You would think in the age of social media we would see more than a few of these guys show up to try and get e-famous like some of those old arcade high score holders. I was set to win one of PSM's contests, but those fucking kikes cancelled the contest without notice. It's not that somebody else won; NOBODY won it. They made no mention of the results in the issue that was supposed to announce the winner. The previous contest and the later contests' winners were announced, and the sequence proceeded as normal. I had spent $40 on an overpriced Polaroid to photograph everything as directed in the contest rules, and sent everything NEXT DAY AIR. Fuck me.

I know a little about this. Apparently, only 1 of the prizes actually was awarded. There was a jewelry box, a Faberge egg, a chalice and a crown. And the 4 finalists would compete for the sword.
The last 2 games got cancelled, so the contest never progressed. The remaining items are mostly lost, but someone has said they saw a sword fitting that description in the living room of some exec related to the swordquest games.

Usually you need to sign some sort of affidavit of eligibility/liability release and W9 form if you win something worth over $600 so they can inform the IRS or whatever. It also allows them to use your name until the end of time and is supposed to prevent you from suing. It's pretty standard fare.

I don't really know if there's any trace of it left, but I was once sort of acknowledged as the number one fan of an obscure baguette game, In Memoriam. Probably published under another name in burgerland.
The gist of the thing was that it was a point and click mixed with an ARG of sorts. Fake news websites and such were created to provide a faux real world context to the intrigue, and some of the devs posed as characters, from the colleagues of the abducted journalist or the esoteric serial killer.
What happened was, I was in high school and went full autismo over it, and eventually spurred the creation of a fan site which purported to catch the killer (who is at large at the end of the game/ARG narrative). We knew very well it was just make believe, but essentially we thought that by drumming up such a fan effort, the devs would continue the ARG past the game. And we were right ! Some months after the release of the game, one of the fake websites was updated, conveying a riddle by the serial killer.
The riddle was presented in the form of the internet handles of twelve members of the fan site. Mine was the first of the twelve, acknowledging I was the one who spurred the fansite.
Outside of the make believe, were also on friendly terms with the devs themselves, and they confirmed that was the intention. The ARG continued for a little bit, and one especially cryptic riddle was released. It was a long-ass string of seemingly random numbers and letters, but I happened to have a little bit of experience in the library business (middle school internship) and recognized one part of the string was an ISBN. And not just any ISBN - it was the book De Magia from Giordano Bruno (an old Italian esotericist that was a key figure in the game's plot). I had that damn book because I wanted to read some of that guy's work, and like any retard high schooler, made damn sure everybody in the fan site knew about it. So essentially they had made that riddle specifically because they knew I had the book to solve it. Sure enough, the rest of the string was coordinates for words in the book.
Sadly, that was at the tail end of forum drama, to which I said fuck that shit and I left shortly after that. No idea what happened since.
