>But if the Compile Heart games are so shit why do people buy them?
Cute girls doing cute/lewd things. Their games range from mediocre to shit with a few that stand out. I actually enjoyed Trillion and Mary Skelter. There's definitely some things to improve on but they're still solid games.
In Trillion you train girls to fight against a single boss with 1 trillion HP. Constantly going through characters to stop a living force of nature. You constantly train them just to fight this one asshole and most, if not all, will die. Some people don't actually kill Trillion on their first playthrough. The best route is to have no one die but that definitely requires one playthrough. You actually may start liking the character before you knowingly send them off to be sacrificed. However, each character that dies sacrifices themselves to do damage, stun, or disable Trillion's body part. You can even have a copy of that character to fight with you in the next battle. What the game falls short at is the periods between fighting Trillion can get a little repetitive. This part is more like Princess Maker 2, but unlike Princess Maker 2 it doesn't have enough random events and options to really make it interesting. The random dungeon is pretty dull too.
Mary Skelter isn't bad either. It's a dungeon crawler centered around combat that has a momentum strategy. By overkilling the enemy, you spray blood on your characters which can power them up. Time things properly and you'll have every girl on the team in massacre mode ripping and tearing enemies all over the place which will cause mass HP and MP regen and access to super moves. It's pretty interesting with how you deal with the weakness of multiple enemies to properly time your massacre mode activation. However, taking to much damage while covered in blood can lead to corruption which can make characters go berserk and attack everyone. So you have the MC control people's corruption by using his own blood which lowers corruption. He can also guard allies to nullify damage but this can disable him for a few turns. Another thing that makes this game interesting is that the FOEs (bosses) that travel around the dungeon actively hunt you down (in real time) and you have to run away from them. Getting cornered usually means death. Where this game falls short is that the class system could be more interesting and I think the battle system could use a little more depth to really flesh it out.
Compile Heart/Idea Factory games have most of their passion put into the characters. However I don't think they have the talent (or don't take the time) to flesh out their gameplay. Mary Skelter, Death End Re:quest, Omega Quintet, and Trillion all have interesting ideas. If given to better devs, they could make something great. CH/IF take the few risks that more talented companies don't make when it comes to interesting gameplay/combat mechanics but fall short in certain aspects.
I don't hate CH/IF for what they do. I just wish they did it better. Thankfully, they don't betray their niche audience which is always good in my book.
