Thompson was just an attention whore who latched onto video games, notable only because the was the first of many to come. This is proven by his increasingly crazy court submissions, which eventually got him disbarred (I'm sure submitting gay porn is a great way to get the court to listen to you, Jack!). If a movie reviewer walked into the screen and played with his phone the whole time and walked out to piss twice, no one would say his review is good. If a guy is reviewing a product like a can opener and fails to follow the instructions completely everyone just thinks he's an idiot. His whole shtick was trying to get the government to ban mature games to keep them out of childrens' hands, even though the ESRB was already doing this pretty effectively and games had been ruled to have 1st Amendment protection.
On the other hand, the modern conflict is the games industry and games media telling so-called "core" video game consumers to fuck off, because the big money comes from other sources like mobile and freemium.
