There's a few of those 6th gen midway games like psiops. The company is gone, right? Psiops is decent, easy and controls awkwardly with a keyboard and mouse but is a pretty good game. I'd like to see how it feels on xbox or something.

0 A.D. is a free and open source game that was originally meant to be a total conversion for Age of Empires 2 but then they ended up making their own engine instead. It's still in alpha but worth a look if you like RTS games. Pretty good.

There's also openRA which is an open source version of Command & Conquer games. If you want to play red alert online then I guess that's the best way.

No it isn't, it's a community project made using open sourced code from the original. Your claim is like saying John Carmack is the creator of GZDoom.

Remember Escape Velocity? Endless Sky is basically a perfect remake, just with some different stories and flavor around the worlds. It's kind of like Mount and Blade in space, now that I think about it. Start with a small ship and do whatever to make money, and you can follow plot lines to ally yourself with the factions and help them conquer the galaxy, or you can build up a huge fleet and fuck everything up.

The creator of Castle of the Winds eventually released it for free on his webpage. Said page has come down, but it got archived on the wayback machine:
http://web.archive.org/web/20110717071112/http://www.exmsft.com/~ricks/
It's a 16-bit program so it has trouble working on 64-bit Windows. Supposedly using WinXP mode of DOSbox will work, but just in case it doesn't:

Sang Froid
Set in 1850s "canada" it's basically a game where you have to protect your sister from the Devil who has an entire town's worth of souls to turn into wearwolves/skinwalkers/etc.
More emphases is put on properly preparing for what is coming at you each night by setting up various traps and bonfires and choosing the properly blessed weapon/bullets etc
But it's okay because you sister is some kind of witch that tells you everything that is coming that night, from where and where it is going
Also a core mechanic is where you can build up fear points by shouting or standing near fire and enemies wont approach you until they enough points of their own so you can use this time to score some headshots with your musket or take out the stragglers
It also has an absolutely great sound track
As far as I know you need either gog or steam account to get it which is a bit of a bummer

Anyone ever played the adventure games made by Jonas Kyratzes? He probably has one of the best freeware game track records out there (and is really underrated), his games are all incredibly humorous and whimsical, especially his masterpiece, "The Strange and Somewhat Sinister Tale of the House at Desert Bridge".
"Bog's Adventure in the Underworld" is also worth mentioning as an underappreciated gem.
