Does anyone have hints for Daiji? I keep trying to hit that fucker in the face with a certain samurai weapon, but whenever I have him at 20% or so, the ceiling gets so low that I can no longer reach him. Is that certain upwards-shooting weapon supposed to be used in this fight?
Also, on that totem thing - it's supposed to work with certain horn-shaped structures, right?

Subweapons can help, but I found jumping really high to be useful too. You should be able to get two solid hits in each side.
The totem is used with the black spire gate things - it's an extra teleport to one

Obviously don't use an Attack Fairy unless they've patched it, when I tried that on the release build the fairy went straight for the treasure chest and hardlocked the game. If you want to win the DPS race you'll obviously want some upgrades to make your weapons faster, can't you get both of those before fighting that miniboss?

That doesn't sound right. You enter Battlefield from Roots via a sigil and then activate that seal that drops the platform near the lower left of the zone, and then go through the 3-soul door to the shrine. Even then, that zone is just a transition zone to Ancient Chaos, more or less

You do need a key for at least one puzzle. I noticed that gates only turn blue if your sequence is wrong. Shapeshifter will never appear on the next correct door afaik. Bronze mirror is helpful but skippable. I thought harp was necessary but then it might not be. Buying it saves some money though so it might be worth as a non core item in a speedrun

There's one particular attack during his first phase (the second water wave) which I could only consistently dodge by jumping forward towards the wave and then changing direction in midair, it gave me trouble because I was approaching it with the old control mindset. During his second phase I remember it felt like there was almost no opportunity to attack until I realized his attack pattern had slightly changed in addition to the increased speed, and there were actually more opportunities for damage since he was the one closing the gap, if that makes sense.

I can go to fight the battle chicken under treetops after using sun and moon mantra, but it's invincible. At the other end of the area, I made a circle appear before the path leading up to immortal battlefield, but it doesn't seem to do anything. I can go fight fenrir after melting ice with mantra, but it's invincible. I went the other way in the ice zone, killed a boss, and it makes some seemingly useless ice pyramid appear. Further along is a path blocked by pink barrier that kills you in one hit. In the chaos zone, I have to pray to lord anus of the analnaki (did they cause all the dissonance by anal probing the children, era after era?) somehow. One was obvious, look up, but the other two don't make any sense. One picture seems to show slitting your own wrist, and the other seems to show lying on your back, impossible actions. Also, of course, no idea what to do with Brahma or those crazy spinning wheels showing the various ages. Both need the same item to be able to hurt them, which I think you get from beating the ankh boss in Treetop. To get said ankh you need to figure out how to get around a catch 22 situation, since chicken leads to the underworld but you need an item from there to get the ankh to appear. Therefore, find another way in. Remember the dude chilling before the top entrance of Immortal Battlefield? He's sitting near a symbol that you've seen elsewhere, and the bottom icon is the underworld. Find a mantra combo to actually be able to get there since it's blocked
>praying to lord anus
The two remaining prayers are leaning and lying on your back with your legs spread. The first requires you to take off an equipable item and use a nearby seemingly useless element in the room, while the other one you've probably seen a ton of times during the game and just didn't realize. Hint: the room is very tall
>croco scale
For your heart to be light enough you gotta get rid of your weights. Honestly don't get why anyone would have trouble with this one.

Biggest interconnected puzzle in the game, there's a ton of tablets with information on it. You can't start doing it without turning on 5 lasers in Brama's room, I think, unless you brute force it and it happens to work even when the lasers are off.
Hint 1: some nigger asks a lot of people what they think creation is. Could you find these people, and what do you have that has to do with creation?
Hint 2:Their answers have something to do with certain terms and colors
Hint 3:the wheels have symbols on them that are mentioned on tablets, with some words.
Hint 4:the wheels don't spike you on certain colors of the wheel, that's the "right" one for that wheel.

A little underwhelmed, but unless you're doing one finger you have no reason to bitch about 9th child. I can do the first two with zero damage, barring some bad RNG on the second form, and third isn't nearly as hard if you just keep up with getting on the arms. By the time you're dropped of one side you can immediately jump to the other side and get on that one, bombs plus spears make easy work of its health if you're not doing a no sidearms challenge, and 4th form is easy once you get used to the patterns.
You already made it to the end, might as well walk the last two steps.
I'll give you one tip about a mistake I made, to make it less potentially tedious for you: Once you do beat 9th, don't jump off the rising pillar afterwards or you'll be stuck and have to redo the 9th. Fucking reflexes making me do it twice.

Beyond the 'get gud' side of things, I have very little hype. Every guardian defeated in the original reminded you that Mother was your inevitable confrontation, what with the spirit eye thing. This time around there's nothing really to tie it together, I expected Loki to be an antagonist, or at least Ratatoskr to be slightly more interesting. Unless I missed something, Loki just disappears after Vritra, and Freya makes an off mention about how he is/was instrumental to all their plans for Eg-Lana. Again, I'm underwhelmed.

As to why the ending is the way it is, you can hear it from the guys themselves, they burned out and just decided to release the game as is, even after a 31 month delay. I think they should have taken another few months, maybe another year in development, but the fact that they had Kickstarter backers waiting for a finished product probably pressured them to get the job done instead of going on a brief hiatus.

Yeah, they really used the Feather in a much more Metroid-style way this time, I think in LM1 the only thing that required the feather was the Tower of the Goddess. I don't know how many people would have found the Feather skip without being told about it first, though.

Now that I'm doing my second, one finger run, I'm questioning why there's any complaints about early feather being removed at all.
You beat Fafnir, Vritra, rush to get the katana and the item that allows you to combo main weapons, kill jormungandr with the katana upslash, use corridor of blood to get to dark lord, kill the frog, and get the feather.
With early feather exploit, you could get the feather from below, without killing the frog, but actually getting to the feather room is impossible from the CoB without killing the frog, isn't it? And going through the other end requires the Djedd pillar to get through the Gate of the Dead. So my method is actually faster than early old feather, I think?
Also jesus fuck, katana makes Jormungandr piss easy. I already had it the first time I fought him, but didn't know how to hit him with it. He felt like one of the hardest bosses even on easy, while now he was a joke on hard mode one finger. I think they also added better telegraphs for his movement, though. That helps a lot.

Does anyone have specific tips for killing Kujata with One Finger? Even with the nerf he's giving me trouble the second time around. I know it's that last phase that's a roadblock for me and I guess I just need to kill his minions before going for the last eye, but I haven't gotten it to work. I had about half of the health bar when I fought him I think, using katana with the vajra, and having feather. He wasn't that tough, just had to keep in mind his eye-fireball timings and hit the lava balls out of the air. Kill his minions ASAP, especially on the last phase, and it shouldn't actually be that hard.

Nice. I just beat Aten-Ra, gonna call it quits for the night.
Once you beat Vritra + Jormungandr + Kujata you can do pretty much anything in the game, upgrade wise. You can max the damage of the katana with the gauntlet, spaulder, app combo, get full health, get the fur, and fill out most of your equipment in general before fighting even a single guardian.
I only did about half of that though. I'm probably get the fur and spaulder before fighting Cheeki Breeki since I already had enough trouble hitting him melee in easy mode. I'm not sure if weapon fairy would break one finger or not, but I'm gonna challenge myself and not use her either way I think.

I don't think so, you need 3 bosses before you can go to Takamagahara to buy Mekuri Master for the app combo. And I think Spaulder improves damage a bit, and considering that thing's in the Underworld that's definitely impossible without Kujata.
Sequence breaking is pretty fun in this game, even if it's not quite as wide open as the original at first. I managed to upgrade my flail before beating Vritra by first beating Nidhogg and the fish midboss in Immortal Battlefield cheesed him by throwing caltrops on him from land, going to Icefire, getting the claw, going to the hotspring that gives you lava immunity for a few minutes, and solving the block puzzle that way. That made buffed Vritra a considerably better experience.
Now that I think about it, I can probably get the final whip in the morning if I do some Underworld spelunking first. Maybe get the app to increase damage for that, as well.

Also, for reference, you can in fact kill Surtr as 5th and Hel as the 6th guardians, meaning that you can get the flail whip along with both La-Mulana softwares before the rest of the guardians. (Not like Hel, Aten-ra, or Anu are very hard, but Echidna is)

I considered trying that, but is it even necessary? If I remember you right you can just barely survive the lava without the ice cape and without the spring, if you're fast enough.
>Sequence breaking is pretty fun in this game, even if it's not quite as wide open as the original at first.
I hope so, I don't really have a problem with them locking early game alternative routes behind either obscure shortcuts or skill-intensive encounters. I'm replaying it just for the sake of it now, but I think the next go around I'll do it on normal easy just to explore the options. I'm pretty sure you can do the ice block miniboss early on to skip that two-soul door to the Shrine of the Frost Giants, but I just couldn't kill that boss with so little HP on hard.

That means you don't even need the hotspring to get the chain whip, if swimming through the lava fast doesn't work (I don't think it does?), since you can just get the cloak. And considerably more HP than I had, if you feel like it.

I nearly killed Surtr before he did a single punch on hard mode. As long as you stand on the very edge of a block and higher than where his flames will fall, you can just go wild with the flail whip and it won't break the block you're standing on. The arena starts off in a configuration where you can do this on the block to his left. As long as you time the moment where you bait him forward by standing in the center of his sprite well so you can do it twice, I think it might actually be possible to 1-cycle him, and you definitely should be able to on normal mode.

Speaking of the Dark Star Lord, a bit of a tip for Aten-Ra: He's really easy to hit with the axe, and retreats after just two hits of it if you have the app combo for non-whips. Problem is, he survives the 4th cycle with just a sliver of health if you do just that. So during one or two of his vulnerable periods, hit him with the chain whip once, then axe twice for a nice quick-kill.
Might be able to be improved upon with a different combination of damage, maybe you could get him in 3 cycles somehow, but I found this sufficient to make him pretty easy as long as you hurry up with hitting the arms

For my money, the original's better than the remake, and the remake's better than the sequel, which is better (or at least it's more in line with my taste) than any other games in the "genre".
Between the original and the remake for LM1 they each have their merits, but there's definitely something about the purity of the MSX adventure experience with the original, which I didn't really appreciate until I played MSX games for reference. There's also all the little touches they put in, like PR3, or the Metal Gear + Metal Gear 2 ROM combination, or the little Galious references. Looking back at the remake it's hard not to see it as La-Mulana 1.5, since they confirmed in a blogpost that they've been coming up with ideas for a sequel since they were working on the remake in 2009, there are a lot of puzzles implemented in the remake that I think they should have saved for 2.
I don't think it's fair to dismiss the sequel outright, you'd have to play 1 (the original version) and 2 back to back to appreciate the change in the puzzle philosophy. They really try to ground everything in one unified mythology and have a lot of interesting ideas for mechanism activations that aren't just weighing down a dais or hitting something with your whip. It's just a shame that it is a sequel, since you can never recapture the feeling of playing La-Mulana for the first time. You'll never walk into a backside field for the first time again, you'll never realize that Mother is an alien for the first time again, you'll never again discover that path that was hidden under the Surface the whole time, etc.
>La-Mulana 2 felt short and had easier puzzles compared to the original
LM2 objectively has more stuff in it and the maps are the same size (about 400 screens, excluding Hell Temple), so I don't know about that. And I promise I'll stop beating this dead horse, but I don't think anyone who's played the original is in the right position to impartially judge the difficulty of the sequel.

I completely agree. When you get the "hang" of the game and can tell second meanings in the hints or easily discern between hints for the meta puzzles later on. It happened to me with the Dark Lord's Footprints puzzle.
That's mostly why I wanted to know other people opinions about the difficulty.

Are you thinking about Metroidvanias?. To my mind La-Mulana series has such unique focus (Difficult puzzles with a lot of exploration) compared to say Castlevania (Combat) or Metroid (Exploration), That makes it hard to compare it to others "metroidvanias" or even say it's not one. Or perhaps am I missing games with the same focus of La-Mulana?

Well I still prefer it to any MSX adventure game, which might be closer, but I was talking about Metroidvanias. I'd hesitate to agree that LM1 is a metroidvania as well, but LM2 is advertising itself as "the perfect Metroidvania" in the manual, so I guess that ship has sailed.

Second advice is that when you leap off the tentacle to come back to the ground, save your double-jump so that you can keep Lumisa from falling on her back, so that you ensure you don't miss the next tentacle.

I got him. I didn't realize that there was so little damage from everything other than his eye lasers. Still a tough cunt.
Did the escape sequence feel really anti-climatic and kind of jank to anyone else? There's no time limit, you can save at the grail tablet, and the only hard part is that the minibosses in spiral hell are still there and can shoot you and make you fall off the ropes while you're climbing (which doesn't matter because there's no time limit and because of the grail tablet). It feels like a major step down from the first game/remake's escape sequence, which wasn't very hard either but at least had some tension.

It's easy as fuck. Just wait for the beam to appear. You can stand there a second or two before it hurts you, then jump out immediately to avoid taking damage. Even if you bump into the eyeball things, they do very little damage. Just avoid the laz0rz.

Here's a spoiler if you want the full context
For whatever reason, the entity known as Mother crashed onto a barren Earth. There were plants and animals, perhaps, but no intelligent life. This was basically during some period of prehistory. Mother wanted to return to the heavens so she created intelligent life.
Each generation of children was bound to Mother's will and worked collectively to return her to the sky. Every time the race strayed too far from its intended purpose, grew too powerful, or tried to take her power for their own use, she caused an apocalypse and killed the civilization and then started a new generation of children.
The second generation, the Giants, came closest, bulidling much of the ruins. Their plan was to make a water-powered rocket, it didn't work and their purpose fell apart so Mother caused ruination on them. Eventually, some of the later races had a less powerful bond to Mother and made plans to kill her, but needed a later generation (current humanity) to do it.
Some of this is mentioned in brief detail early on in the game, eg I believe Fobos tells you a bit here and there, or a lot of the Elder's tablets in the old ruins explain the history somewhat.
