I know that feel. I haven't been able to properly (i.e., without graphical or audio glitches) play some of my favorite games like Warbreeds in years because I don't use windows 95 anymore.

just got done playing skyrim and it was an amazing game. i'm going to buy oblivion and play that next.

I replayed Super Mario 64 about a year ago or so. I really thought it would be dated and boring, but I had the most fun I've had in a 3d Mario in a very long time. I've also gone back and played old games I used to love and just lost interest. It's a good idea to go back and refresh yourself on older games to see if you still like them and if they still hold up.

I played Rogue Squadron 1 lately, and though the boss fight at the last level still sucks ass it held up really well.

I wish there were more good space dogfighters, and none with this open world bullshit either.

One of the good things is that there are a shit ton of romhacks for it, some of them almost the length of the original game.

I've got bad news for you about WW. Like you I loved it when I was younger but last year I replayed it for the first time since about 2010 and holy fuck, I can't believe I ever liked it. It's just so shallow, and mind-numbingly easy to the point of boredom. The "world" consists of a bunch of mostly empty islands with maybe one treasure chest on them, the game just tries to trick you into thinking it's big by having so many of them. And those with interior areas repeat them a ton too. "Hey player how'd you like to fight five floors full of enemies until you find a treaure chart at the bottom? It's not like you haven't done that ten times already!"

The dungeons have no challenge whatsoever, never any question of what you need to or any hard fights, you just breeze through it. And then they make the final two dungeons into escort quests. The first dungeon is a fucking forced stealth section which might be alright halfway through the game for a change of pace but not right at the start before you've actually had any normal gameplay. And of course getting seen is instant failure insead of anything fun.

Speaking of the last two dungeons, the game tries to trick you into thinking it's non-linear by implying that you can go to them in any order. But no, when you go to pick up the guy for the wind temple he's just not there and the deku tree's like "oh I guess he went out, don't try to look for him just come back later". Not even an attempt to explain to the player why you have to do the other first, just railroading.

Then there's the endless sailing and the triforce fetch quest which I used to defend against everyone's hatred but no, everyone was right, they suck. If you want to go somewhere in this game you just point the ship in the right direction, put the controller down, and wait five minutes.

Basically Wind Waker doesn't do a single thing right except Tetra who I really wish could have been in a better game. Do yourself a favour OP and don't replay it, just let the memory live.

I recently put up a retro game setup in the corner of my room. PSX, Genesis and SNES.

The games are still great and incredibly fun to play. Shame you weren't raised in a good generation, OP.

I play at least one of my favorites every year just to keep them in perspective with the other stuff I play. It works out and they are still my favorites.

I'd say the funny thing is my opinion on games rarely changes. There's a ton of stuff I'll keep giving another chance, but it still ends up being shit, while games I enjoyed are just as good (to me) as they were on release. I replayed Mario 64, DKC 2, Goldeneye, MGS3, and they all still have the magic.

I'm currently replaying Skies of Arcadia and I'm having a great time. The magic system is a bit useless, but the whole game is very uplifting and cheerful compared to all the other jrpgs of the era. Considering how dull this year has been for new releases, I may just keep to reliving 2001.

Why is there so much more lewd of Vyse than Aika?

I used to be all over the Metal Gear series. I tried re-playing all of them about a year or so ago and I can honestly say that Splinter Cell has ruined my taste for them. I can only tolerate the controls from GZ and TPP now because of the stupid crouching/crawling controls in the originals.

My all time favorite games are Far Cry 2, which I just beat for the fourth time last year, Killer7 which I haven't played in for fucking ever gona get a Xeno modded gamecube and play it on that next, only ever played the bad ps2 port, Silent Hill 2 which I beat for the jesus I don't even know like tenth time in January, Resident Evil 4 which I beat for the twentieth+ time about a week ago, and a game almost nobody else has played called You Are Empty which I haven't played in forever but should.

It helps that the games have practically zero downtime aside from 2's unskippable opening. I wish more games had instant menus like Dragon Quest does.

The 3DS port has crouch walking and even has third person and auto-aiming from Peace Walker. The framerate is a bit questionable, especially during cutscenes, but overall it's a great port. It's really convenient to play for 15 minutes, close the lid to jerk off, and come back 2 minutes later for more.

I play a lot of my favorites every year or every couple of years.

Most of them still hold up.

1. The Legend of Zelda

Played it a few months ago. Still absolutely love it. Played the master quest immediately afterward. My only gripe is during master quest there's a point where there's a red bubble that permanently takes away your sword power unless you backtrack a ton to hit a blue bubble or kill yourself. It's in the master quest, so it's forgivable, though.

2. Doom

Played it last year, and had a blast. I played Doom 2 immediately afterward. The game benefits from mouse aiming, though.

3. Final Fantasy Tactics

Played it a few months ago, did all of the side quests, and got all of the hidden characters. It was a blast. The translation is a mess, but the game is great fun and has a wonderful story.

4. Chrono Trigger

Currently playing this right now. The music is great, the story is great, but a little flawed, it's pretty good for a turn based JRPG, and is overall very good in its presentation. My only complaint is that some of the combat drags if you don't use magic on certain enemies and if you have the battle speed on active and at the fastest speed, the dragon tank boss is annoying because it can heal faster than you can dish out damage.

5. Goldeneye

Played this last month. The controls are a mess, the game feels clunky, but it still has a lot of charm. I don't like it as much as I used to, but I still had a lot of fun playing through it again.

I make a point to beat Doom 1 and 2 annually and I've added Quake into the mix relatively recently. I've found they're very much worth revisiting despite their flaws.

Barbie Race and Ride (PS1)

me, my dad and brother would always play this and while still enjoyable, it lacks a few things that make newer games good.

Blaster Master still holds up as a masterpiece. Rather than playing it, though, I've been hacking it. Adding more stuff to some of the dungeons, changing graphics, and some of the map layout to be a bit more like Blaster Master Zero. Can't go all the way, though, as the game uses a compression method of sorts to keep the ROM size down, so I can't rebuild Zero on a block-by-block basis. Have to work in 128x128 pixel blocks for map editing, using pre-defined map elements. I have seen some fucking UGLY hacks of Blaster Master, so I'm using short strokes.

I also hacked Metal Gear for NES to make it a bit more like the MSX version, but without some good tools, I couldn't put Metal Gear in the computer room. One asshole was doing that, but never released anything before abandoning the project and refusing to talk about it, but still hanging around the forums. I didn't like Hyper Metroid, though I can say it is a masterwork of a Super Metroid hack. Just not my cup of hot leaf juice.

I dunno, severe burnout has just made me work on games, rather than play them.

It's still OK but the story part is annoying as fuck. A sandbox game in that world with better combat would be amazing.

I downloaded MW4 and it was dogshit, even with a HOTAS. Can't believe it was my favorite game in middle school with my shitty entry level Saitek.
