I liked RE7. Revelations 2 is better, though. Speaking of old Resident Evils and returns to form, the cinematic is a highly unused resource in the age of live action, in-engine cutscenes and Rev 2's are sparse and interesting enough to feel like the old school rewards cutscenes were when games were difficult and memory was limited. They're all also well directed, the end is high kino.

4 is fucking garbage when you really think about it.
The mechanics are weaker and not built for an action game. Like the item select they kept from the classics, that doesn't work in an action game as it makes the game too easy. RE5 did it right by not having the item menu pause the game, while also adding quick select to keep the game fast paced.
The item shop being moved to before starting chapters is also a smart design choice. The Merchant is fun, but it's better to have you be able to select items before starting up the game, given the smaller inventory.
RE5 also has an actual plot and villains, in addition to the fact that there is more than one worthwhile file.
It realized doing key item puzzles is pointless when key items don't go into your main inventory.
All the villains are better than the ones in 4, including Excella and Irving.
The bosses are better.
The game is also shorter, 4 had an issue of being WAY too long.

My love of RE always came from the slow unravelling of a big puzzle box while the game also pushes you to rush your actions. That's what I love about RE. RE4 regressed the mechanics found within that kind of game and changed the setup to make it more like a shitty arcade game (While being bad at it in comparison to its sequel).
REv2 got close to attaining some of the essence the classics had, but failed, mostly due to all the elements of the classics feeling forced (REv1 was just shit).
REmake 2 does look like a step in the right direction.
It gave RE2 actual original level design from what we've seen, whereas the original was a ripoff of RE1 due to development time and the 1.5 situation. It seems to be taking some queues from RE7 in the good way, not the bad way (that being gimmicks and a shit story), and the game actually looks like 1998 midwestern America.

Oh the irony. RE7 was a shit game, not at all a subjective selection here, it's apart of everything wrong with modern horror games. Not just SH as a genre. I also enjoy RE4, especially the new HD release on PC that has the framerate issue that makes enemies more terrifyingly quick which made for an enjoyable professional playthrough, but it killed the series effectively. It was the catalyst for the death of the series and lead to worse because it's quite bluntly not a Resident Evil game. The problem with this kind of mentality as well is that it assures that we will never get a proper RE game ever again.

The skeleton of RE7 is not bad, but it is content lite. The maps are tiny. There are about four enemy types. It's a ridiculously short game. The keys give you the illusion of backtracking and things expanding but it is pretty much a linear experience. The boss fights are pretty good though.

RE2 is only close to 4 in terms of 'there's some explosions and more enemies', but that can be said for every RE game after 1.
RE2's level design is a straight ripoff of RE1, it retains the classic gameplay and how it was utilized, and how you play.
Your only real point is 'well re2 is more action so it's more re4 than re1', when that isn't an apt comparison. RE2 as we know it would be nothing without RE1, and the classic RE mentality doesn't hinder the game like it does for RE4.
