They literally have nothing to show
They teased this tech for years and even the early 2018 demo's where so lacklustre every damn demo only pushes shitty reflections when the real improvement is in lighting and shadows (notice how there isn't a single game that has this right now or demo for rtx?)
Very fucking fishy and a anon on tech pointed this out
>It's fake anyway. It won't work in games as if your back is to the light source it will be culled and can't light the room. Or if a game is modified to support the tech and tries to render a simplified light/model behind the player when the geometry is culled then all the lighting will dramatically shift when not bouncing off the same geometry. Games that want it to look right will have to disable frustum culling and take an absolutely massive performance hit.
They presented this shit as simple as "flick a switch" but it absolutely will not work that way in reality.

I think we need to give Intel a shot. They have their own manufacturing getting ready to pump out 10nm CPUs next year. With nearly unlimited money and their own manufacturing they might be able to make a good GPU.
And you really cant count AMD out just yet, if they come out with a multi chip GPU like they do with Ryzen and Threadripper it will give them a massive advantage over Nvidia especially on newer manufacturing nodes with poor yield like 7nm and 5nm.

God fucking damn it every time I think about the amazing future of gaming with PhysX that was taken away from us because of Nvidia I get so fucking pissed off. Not only was PhysX going to be available for users who bought the dedicated card, it was also going to be available to run on CPUs. At the time running it on your CPU was dramatically slower but it would have only been a matter of time until CPUs became fast enough that the cards would have been made pointless, especially with the rise of multi-core CPUs. When Nvidia bought it, they didn't just restrict it from AMD GPUs, they also forced PhysX processing to run on an old, slow instruction set to cripple any chance it had of running on your CPU, and it was only made usable through brute-force on their GPUs. Not content to stop there however, they decided that instead of letting the full feature set of PhysX go to market, they drip-fed us things that were ALREADY FULLY FUNCTIONAL AND PUBLICLY DEMONSTRATED one at a time. First was the hard body physics calculations, then a couple years later were the cloth physics, then a couple years later were the fluid physics.
The only thing worse than what Nvidia did with PhysX was what Creative Labs did with all of their sound card competition in the late 90s and early 2000s, but at least karma was able to bite them in the ass when Microsoft killed off DirectSound3D.

You're acting as if this is the only product Nvidia puts out, or that there aren't other GPU manufacturers
Even if Nvidia's stock price took a nosedive tomorrow all that would happen is you'd see Intel/AMD rise up and take its place, and maybe some other Chinese corporation try to muscle in. Nvidia releasing some really expensive GPU is exactly the same as Logitech releasing a really expensive keyboard. It doesn't change the fact that they also make 20$ ones and that they have tons of competition.
The original gaming crash of the 1980s was caused entirely because parents had no idea what video game systems to buy because of an influx of clone systems. Which isn't the case today there's usually only 1-2 brands people tend to go for. And most people who purchase these products do it for themselves and have ample amounts of research available to them online.

Actual ray tracing using what seems to be a limited number of scene divisions since they're giving the number of rays per second independent of geometry complexity. So like the octree-based GI papers that have been going around for years but putting a limit on the number of subdivisions in the octree so it fits whatever requirements they've come up with to efficiently map to the hardware. They seem to not be using it to render the individual pickles in the scene but to do lower resolution lighting and reflection calculations that will be used to produce the final scene, as a replacement for light probe spam. But I've not looked at the details yet, this is just educated guesses based on what they presented.

>When I was growing up, there were games that required you to upgrade your PC
That's because you're too retarded to realize that it was the time when development of graphics was skyrocketing and new technologies and software innovations were constantly being developed. That's not the case anymore because we're hit a point where it's very difficult to improve further in both software and hardware side.
>at least you could see an actual difference in graphical capability once that happened.
You can get graphics equivalent to what we have today on a 5 year old GPU. You're basically arguing for buying the latest GPU every year so you can play badly optimized AAA trashware and then complain in /v/ about how it pushed globalism down your throat. Graphics aren't getting meaningfully different, so you shouldn't be buying meaningfully different GPUs in the first place.
The top tier GPUs are made for faggots with too much fucking money and too little braincells to make sound decisions, and you're that guy right now. Buy a 2070 or something if you really can't live without the latest Nvidia Graphics Card®.

This. The worst part is that it's so easy. It's why big games get day one fan mods optimizing the shit out of them. I'm far from an expert, but it's simple stuff like "disable collision on objects if the player is not right next to them" and really obvious shit like that. It's mostly just "execute scripts only when the player is close enough to see/feel it". Quite a blanket statement and won't always work, especially when it comes to NPCs and so on, but it works most times. That's also not to mention all other bloat, too.

I don't even mind people being ignorant of crypto currencies since there's nothing wrong with ignorance, but what's with the hate?
Is it specifically because of the price boom of GPUs? That's it?
That had nothing to do with Bitcoin in particular. GPUs were used to mine other crypto currencies. I can see other crypto currencies dying, but I doubt Bitcoin is dying anytime soon and I can't fathom why anyone would want it to die to give more power to (((bankers))) and (((IRS))) instead.

I'm fully aware of the GPUs' prices issues, but that has nothing to do with crypto currencies in general, it's just the way some specific crypto currencies were designed. If anything, bitch about those crypto currencies. Bitch about GPU based mining. Bitch about Nvidia taking advantage of the situation.
Crypto entails a lot more than just people making easy money off of buying GPUs. It provides people with an anonymous way to make purchases, independently of jewish bankers and governments. The fact that people want all crypto currencies to die just because some crypto currencies were built with GPU mining in mind, ignoring all its benefits, specially ignoring the part where it helps fight jewish corporations that people do seem to hate otherwise, is not only absolutely fucking retarded but just downright sad. When my fucking phone broke and I had to get a new one and got a Samsung OLED, the "true black" you get from each pixel emitting its own colour really does change entire experience imo. I still have a fairly big electric Jew that is not OLED, and the differecne between colors when the screen has "backlighting" as opposed to each emitting its own really is a fundamentally different experience.
I managed to get the device that runs steam from PC to Tv fairly cheap on amazon. Seriously considering getting a decent OLED TV ~65 inches if I can find one at a decent price, since even with the slight feedback delay there really is not competition since the few OLED monitors are trash.

The memeing is exactly that, derisive memeing, not ignorance. We don't give a shit about your retarded distinctions, we want to make you mad, because we're angry. As for reasons to hate both buttcoin in particular, and other crypto in general?
>Crypto is a pyramid scheme, simple as. Its entire premise isn't a "currency" or even a "value store", but supposedly an "investment". And how does this investment "generate" RoI? By transferring money from later victims to early scammers, nothing else. It should be illegal under franchise fraud laws on this basis alone. The only way to fix this would be a mildly inflationary coin, none of which exist.
>The mining process is a pointless, technically needless waste, whether done via ASIC or FPGA as in the case of older cryptos like Buttcoin, or CPU/GPU as in the case of newer cryptos like Etherium made specifically to encourage GPU mining. There are a handful of cryptos like Reddcoin or Faircoin that have dispensed with mining in favor of other security mechanisms, but they are unpopular, because the Ponzi scammers that typically get into crypto fetishize bullshit "work".
>Blockchains are inherently impractical at the scales needed to accomplish economically useful work, and as such the use of crypto outside the neo-goldbug Ponzi community has waned to the point of nonexistence. There are other algorithms, but nobody uses them.
Any or all of the above completely wipe out any theoretical plusses:
<Anonymous, decentralized currency? Breaks down at scale, resultant transaction fees and delays render it worthless for actual spending.
<Decentralized, permanent ledger and communication mechanism for non-financial purposes? Breaks down at scale.

Reminder, whinging about exclusives and lying that every game is objectively the best on PC is all PC gamers have to dissuade you from enjoying games they can't because they're too poor. Look into each platform and see if it offers what you want, there has been very little reason to invest in a competitive PC for games, as the ports get worse, ownership has vanished and the exclusives that take advantage of the platform have dwindled.

Nice and vague. Competitive with what? Requirements to run the games you want at playable settings? The 2-gen-old laptop hand-me-down specs of consoles? Specs needed to run games at settings way higher than consoles? Some arbitrary grouping of other gamers' PCs?

Use your brain, modern consoles. A system which can play the same games would be in the 600 to 800 range. It's worth having a PC, but is it worth having one thag expensive, or even more so if you want to fall for the 1440p60 meme or 120 or 144hz meme. Or the max settings meme.

IDK about this fam. To get my 30 gb of RAM was almost price of a console even before I began adding in the other shit. I could probably have found a cheaper motherboard which would have lowered entire thing, but I went for a good ROG one. I mean, guess it all depends on your mindset. MY nephew is asking me to help him build a a rig now (with my sister's shekels), and I'm trying to convince him to stick with a console since for a kid of 12, I don't think he'll even know the difference and I'd much rather see him playing games like old school COd:MW where you can do things like hunt favella monkeys.
The last few COD offerings have been so bad as to literally inctie laughter. Even with the game that was based in Korea, You weren't allowed to see actual blood or corpses when you killed someone. And then all the other games were full of weird negroes in spacesuits and all kinds of shit.
Which leads me to my contention, these motherfuckers would rather lose money than make a game even slightly controversial. A game released right now about a European civil war where you got to clear islamic occupiers from European cities would be best selling game of all time if they made it, no question. But they'd lose face in the eyes of SJW/ NWO gang types and so will never happen in a million years.

What exactly do you do with it, load the entire game into a RAMdisk? Even 16GB is a bit excessive, 8GB exceeds the reqs of most games. Remember every dollar you spend on a part irrelevant to your workload, is a dollar that could go into a part of your rig that's actually bottlenecked (better GPU, faster SSD, faster single-thread CPU, etc.).

Flight sims with a joystick are great because your audio, visual, and tactile (sitting in chair with hands on joystick) are all in sync with the game. It's an incredible feeling, and works well with the immersive nature of simulation games.

Yeah, I thought that, too; it seems to be aimed at workstations for companies. I was confident in their design choices to keep costs down; that's why I had enough trust to go through with it. Headset is wired with HDMI and a USB 3.0 port, and has ZERO tracking issues (excepting a pitch black room where it cannot find a reference point, which doesn't really happen). The controllers are better than the Vive's IMO, but many VR games aren't designed to utilize them fully. I didn't care about controllers that much (vust wanted the headset really), but they were a pleasantly functional addition. The BIG drawback of the Visor is that it is a Windows Mixed Reality headset, so you require Windows to run it.

Cryptoponzi is one half of the problem, other half is massively inflated memory prices saddling GPUs with premiums due to the need for VRAM. Fortunately, unlike cryptoponzi, memory manufacturers' criminal behavior is being dealt with in a series of pricefixing and antitrust suits that will push memory prices back down to sanity by late this year:

Not sure where you're getting your prices. A spin through PC Parts Picker and (because PCPP dropped most listings for the 980Ti) Amazon/Newegg showed a roughly identical $400-$700 spread for both the 980Ti and the 1070, with too much overlap between new and refurb for me to discern a significant price difference.
Reading a bit more about RAM prices, though, I found these two articles:
https://www.gamersnexus.net/industry/3212-ram-price-investigation-ddr4-same-price-as-initial-launch
https://www.gamersnexus.net/industry/3211-what-do-manufacturers-think-of-mining-and-gpu-prices
Look at pics related from the first article, and notice the the production window for both most GeForce 9xx (2014-2015) and most GeForce 1xxx (2016-2017) GPUs line up perfectly with the peaks.
Also, an amusing nugget for the buttcoin apologists in this thread:
>Then, of course, there’s the fact that fabrication groups like TSMC are suddenly facing demand from mining companies, like Bitmain, to produce mining-dedicated GPUsASICs for dedicated mining devices. This should be less of an issue, assuming TSMC is not tapped at maximum capacity.
