Xenoblade did well enough, considering apparently even post Wii reprint, demand wasn't sated enough that it was deemed warranted. Xenoblade's an odd example because it was shortprinted at launch in NA (because NoA didn't deem it worth a remotely decent print size), quickly picked up steam and expanded, to the point that existing copies shot up to $120 preowned, $200 sealed within a few months. NoA eventually sent Gamestop a reprint about a year later, which Fucking Gamestop tried marking up to $90 after unwrapping them and slapping a preowned label on all of them. Beyond that, while there is crossover at points, the handheld audience is not necessarily the same as the console audience, thus Xenoblade 3DS hitting a slightly different part of Nintendo's base, and with the benefit of already having popularity amongst the JRPG crowd here (I've heard the sales of the Wii version in NA were actually above the prior PAL and even Japanese releases of it).
Overall though, it's a case where Xenoblade Wii getting more popular with time influenced Shulk to be in Smash WiiU and 3DS, which served as both celebration of him and the game, but also promotion of the 3DS port when the time came. Smash Bros winds up being both celebration and promotion, though of late promotion seems to be getting the emphasis as to including representatives from recent/upcoming games (see the various Fire Emblem reps). And speaking of Fire Emblem, you could say that Roy and Marth being left in for the western release of Melee was what introduced Fire Emblem to western Nintendo fans at large to begin with, and why we even started getting the series here.
Point being remakes, ports, and especially crossover games do have a noticeable impact on widening a game or series fanbase via awareness, for better or worse. And it's the "worse" that needs to be watched out for.

While I try to be an optimist, I know well enough to not have any hope for any game that comes out in this day and age. As I mentioned before, they would bring out the worst practices of modern day gaming by nickel and dimeing robo parts with no way of getting them in-game (keeping the good ones or ones they know people want behind this), probably gimp couch multiplayer in favor of online multiplayer to get people to buy more switches (similar to what they did with Pokken), and would have Treehouse "Localize" it (or worse, have their influence affect even the Japanese version). That's only a few and I'd rather not think of any more potential fuck ups they could do with this series.

If they find a series interesting, they'll ask and demand for more accessible versions of said series, which results in either the new games being successful and bringing in more cancer to the respective fanbases, or flop and piss off both sides. Breath of the Wild was mediochre. I played through the whole thing, had my bit of fun, enjoyed the atmosphere they actually worked hard on, but when you get down to it it's bare as fuck design wise. They applied a level design team to an open world game, it was inevitable and they should have stuck to their guns or should have gone all out on more then just the grass given the time they had. It was DECENT. Not godly, not even a console saver, just an opener that sold on hype, same as Odyssey which was also open world. The reason they designed both as "open world" games was to draw in an audience that played skyrim. These games were designed and requisitioned to sell consoles, not to be anything beyond decent.
a few of the games i'm looking forward to on the switch is Valkyria Chronicles 4, and Smash Brothers. And by a few I mean that's all.
The company used to put out SO fucking much but the 3rd parties are carrying the weight and that's a problem considering that they seem to be developing very few games in house.
As for the company's mistakes, if being lackluster was a mistake then the whole world's fucked, but their GREATEST mistake is allowing NoA to even be an unchecked aspect of their company in the first place.

Because money from companies wanting representation. Also perhaps the excuse that Super Smash Bros. never had "Nintendo" in the name. Still, I'd rather they stick to characters that had their actual games be on Nintendo systems at the very least, and the fact that third parties have been being given precedent over (admittedly low popularity) first/second party characters is annoying. Ultimately Smash should be, and should have remained, a celebration of Nintendo's series, or at least games/series they might not own but have been exclusive to their systems.

Because much as Square has tried to act like Lightning is the face of the series, Cloud and Final Fantasy VII have been for a long time. But yeah, something like, say, a Terra/Locke/Edgar Pokemon Traineresque "swap" character, or maybe Buttz, Faris, or Lenna with a job switch mechanic, would be a lot more fitting since their games at least debuted on Nintendo even though Nintendo doesn't own them.

I don't consider an appearance in a prior crossover clusterfuck to suddenly make a character eligible. If going that route, why not toss in Stahn, Haseo, Kurt, or any other character that hasn't had a main showing on Nintendo previously? The entire reason Cloud even got in is because he was in a Kingdom Hearts game on the GBA. I don't really see the problem, since even if they haven't had one of their own games on a Nintendo console, simply being in a game on a Nintendo console technically makes them a part of the history of the company.
Also Dante'd be less weird than Cloud anyways. Besides Project X Zone, he also made an appearance in Viewtiful Joe, which was a Gamecube exclusive that was ported to the PS2 later.

i wouldnt give it too much thought. i dont think dmc has any relationship to nintendo. all the other third party characters do in some fashion. final fantasy started with the old nintendo, so did metal gear, pacman might have started as an arcade game but was a big hit on the nes console. both bayonetta games have been on a nintendo console.
even if im wrong about some of these it would be dantes debut on nintendo, its just not based in anything weve seen so far to assume hed be in.
the only time i can see something like that happening is with some kind of indie characters.

Tales of Symphonia had a cameo battle against Farah, Meredy, and Garr/Woodrow, all of which being characters from PS1 entries in the series.
