Nothing is really mandatory. Depends on your taste. Get some weapon overhaul if you don't like how the guns handle. It's a bit dated in that sense. Same with graphics but who cares.

Play the standalone mod Call of Chernobyl instead if you just want to stalk around in a sandbox.

For a first playthrough you should either play vanilla or ZRP to get a sense for what needs to be modded in the game. How are you gonna know what you want if you never experience what the game is like without it?
