Depending on how the controller's onboard memory is configured it will trip steam which will overwrite everything but what needs to be there to reset the firmware on it, meaning you'd have to factory reset it using steam.
So basically if you launch steam or it's running and you connect it and the controller's onboard memory doesn't have whitelisted modifications (custom midi "ringtones" for turning it on and off as far as I can tell) it gets bricked.
