I have a few questions about webms. The documentation on ffmpeg states that alternate reference frames (-auto-alt-ref) are for 2-pass encodings only. Since crf mode goes for constant quality instead of an average bitrate 2-pass encoding in crf is pointless in that regard, but is there any reason to do 2-pass encoding in crf mode for the benefit(?) of being able to use alternate reference frames? For long webms where audio bitrates of 64/48 kbps would take up too much space, is there a cutoff bitrate in which one should start using mono audio instead of stereo? For even lower audio bitrates is there a limit in which I should start lowering the sampling rate too, since opus supports 48/24/16/12/8 kHz?

64kbps is about as low as I would recommend in most cases where you are dealing with audio with music. For majority or solely voice-based audio, 32kbps is acceptable. Those are both for stereo, so I think they can be cut in half if you do mono audio instead. I wouldn't recommend going too far below those amounts though.
I'm not sure what you're getting at with the crf question, but I'll try to say something that hopefully answers your question. The whole purpose of two-pass encoding is to make a plan for where the clip you are converting needs a lot of data to produce a decent picture and where it doesn't. That way, bits aren't wasted on producing high quality in calm motion and absent for doing so in areas with lots of motion. To take that and force a constant level of quality across the entire clip ruins the purpose of doing two passes.

I have VR. It's a strange experience. Because your eyes actually have to focus on things with binocular vision, you cannot see what it is even remotely like in a video. There are odd sensations like phantom sense which not everyone gets.
Gallery shooters and horror are the main strength of VR right now. Some attempts have been made at MMOs but they're all shit unfortunately. VRChat is just a chatroom with some minigames and the ability to upload your own avatars. If you're not a social person or can't into blender/unity you won't enjoy it. Trapping is very easy too because you can mute your mic if you can't do the voice. Not something I've tried or want to try but I am well aware it does happen.
Would definitely recommend to everyone to try it first hand and then decide if it's for you. WMR is not worth it even with it's much cheaper price. Vive has a better headset plus can expand into full body tracking easily and Oculus has better controllers and is cheaper but has no support for full body. Vive is apparently getting some new controllers called knuckles or something which are basically everything good about the Oculus controllers but now compatible with Vive.

Personally, I think it's myopic (not to mention Marxist) to say that the war was entirely motivated by economic concerns of the global elite. Ideology played a far larger role.
