I need to set up a kid's computer for my Mom, and I need educational games that can run on a toaster. What are some good ones that /v/ recommends?

So far I know I want Zoo Tycoon on it, and the Humongous games too. But outside of those I'm drawing a blank.

I have no idea the exact specs, it's a generic windows 7 government computer. The most "advanced" thing I've run on it was Recettear which ran perfect, but I don't see the computer running much else. But the computer is going to be used for kids (12 and under), so I imagine any taxing educational games aimed for older demographics are out of the question anyways.

>>15302836

There's no backstory. My mom is setting up a computer for kids to use to play educational games and I volunteered to get games to put on the computer, so I want to pick ones that are actually good and fun.

Emulator games are gonna be a no go. Also games that require a large time investment and multiple sessions might not be the best, kids will only get 30-1 hour sessions on it. Games that can be decently enjoyed in that time span will be preferable.

Fuck educational games. If you want to teach them maths, give them something rpg like where they will calculate stats and what not. Want them to learn technology? Get them a game they can play together with a friend but have to set up a server for.

Actual cool games can generally be found for any other skill you wish to teach them.

The only really important element is that somebody who can teach them some of these skills is available for questions and the kid knows they can ask them questions about a game without the adult getting annoyed with the questions.

Assuming "educational" also includes games which are only educational as a side effect:

> Sid Meier's Civilization series

Maybe not the first game, but the later ones are more developed and have an easier interface

> Sid Meier's Colonization

Similar gameplay, but instead of a world-wide empire you colonize America. There are two games: the old DOS game and a newer game based on the Civilization IV engine. Both have the same premise, but somewhat different game mechanics

> Rollercoaster Tycoon

You manage a theme park, keeping track of economy, maintanance, hiring staff, keeping customers interested, and of course you can design your own rollercoaster

> SimCity series

You run a city and have to take care of the needs of its population

> Stronghold series

This is an RTS, but in this one you have to maintain an economy. For example, peasants eat food, so you have to make sure there is a steady influx of food. Where do you get food from? From hunters and farmers, but also from bakers. But bakeries don't magically summon bread, they need flour from the miller and the miller needs wheat, so you have a chain of production there. The same goes for other resources: a blacksmith needs to fetch his iron, which is deliverd from a mine to the stockpile first. A tanner needs a cow from one of the farmers first before he can produce leather armour.>>15302807

For a long time 8chan did indeed use those dreaded cuckchan filenames, and the two were comepletely indistinguishable. Around the time of 148xxx (early 2017) 8chan switched to the new filename system to avoid MOOOOOOOOOOOT incidents. The option to save with unix filenames still exists but new filenames use 10 digits, while cuckchan still uses 13 digits. If it's a 13 digit 15xxx filename it was saved from cuckchan by someone at some point.

On another note, I think the hash filenames here got changed at some point because stuff I got from here has a different hash when I repost it

half jokes, half serious

the King's Quest, Space Quest, and Quest For Glory series will teach them basic and abstract problem solving techniques in a consequence-rich environment

I'd recommend Police Quest but it's a bit dark

Super Amazing Wagon Adventure is the best version of Oregon Trail

Frog Fractions

emulators with Donkey Kong jr Math, Sesame Street games, etc for younger kids.

Typing of the Dead: Overkill (you can download custom dictionaries with various themes)

what? They'll learn fast

Where in the motherfucking World/Europe/Time is Carmen Sandiego (ensure that kids have access to dictionaries/encarta or something)

Sim City 2000, 3000, or 4

The Settlers 2/Widelands

Elite

Bridge Builder

Full Throttle

>zoo tycoon

These are quite nice.

It's like a trip to the zoo, but without the three hours drive, expensive tickets and animals not on display.

Get the Dino expansion if you want to make a dino-autist very happy. The sprites and new fences are a little low quality, but there are mods for that.

The submarine expansion is nice too, but I prefer to play without it.
