What happened is that Crytek tasked Free Radical (Renamed as Crytek UK) with making a sequel/reboot to Homefront. Not long after that, Deep Silver hired all the ex-Free Radical/Crytek UK employees under a new studio named Dambuster Studios, and then tasked them with finishing Homefront: The Revolution. Console shooters can be fun but Timesplitters controls were obsolete by the time the game launched, the single player campaign is just a series of shitty empty levels with generic enemies and the multiplayer is only fun for its extensive customization and options. UT was clunky too, not assigning dodge to a modifier key like shift was really a retarded idea but other than that, at least it had well designed maps except for facing worlds.
>Defending playing FPS games on console is like defending Racing games with a fucking Keyboard.
Games like Halo proved you can design a fps around controller limitations and create a fun experience: thumbsticks and aim assist just means the focus shifts from the basic act of aiming and shooting to other aspects of the gameplay but there's still a considerable amount of depth.
Problems arise when you play a game on a platform it wasn't designed for and pretend it will work just the same: UT and Quake play like shit on a controller, but the same can be said about playing Halo with a mouse, it's not just about how easy it is to aim on pc.

Having to double tap just makes dodging more painful and inconsistent, it doesn't make it any less fast than using a modifier key. A real solution to the problem you are talking about would be just doing what Quake already did before: make movement momentum based so that you reach the maximum speed gradually, making the player trajectory more predictable would also make projectile weapons more effective at range which was also another big problem in UT, where hitscan weapons usually dominate.
>>15303687
There are entire aspects that stop making sense when you play Halo with mouse and keyboard, you may aswell not play it at that point and focus on fps designed with pc in mind.
The fact that you are taken out of scope when you get hit for example, in Halo it's used as a suppression mechanic since the aim assist effective range for precision weapons is based on the zoom level you are using. This obviously doesn't translate to mouse gameplay, and weapon balance is fucked up as a result.
Physics for certain vehicles like the banshee in H2 again, are completely broken when you can almost instantly turn 180 degrees with a mouse.
The game also uses controller vibration a lot to effectively communicate what's happening on screen, pc games usually have some sort of visual effect and audio cues like the grunts you hear in Quake, but Halo takes a more minimal approach with its hud and it can be difficult to understand when you are getting hit without vibration.

Yes, this dodge move which you will often use reflexively in response to fast incoming threats obviously needs an input method which takes two presses instead of just one. Do you like your jumps and block moves with double tap inputs too? It's not like dodge spam can be counteracted in any other way instead of making it less reliable to execute (in time). It's not like there can be recovery frames or cooldown periods after dashing at all.
Literally the only people I see actually defending double tap inputs as a means of balance on the internet are UTards. UT4 did not suffer from one-tap dodging at all. In singleplayer this is a complete cancer, even moreso with old console games with inconsistent framerates where a dropped frame means a dropped input.

With pointless dedicated buttons for dodge and another for run you have sacrificed two keys that could have been used for other mechanics which would have resulted in a more complex and interesting game. However, needing to actual think when using a dodge or defensive manuever seems to make your head hurt so more simple games are more your speed.
>Do you like your jumps and block moves with double tap inputs too?
>Herp derp if u liek double for one thing u liek double tap for ALL thing!
chimp tier logic. Anything more complex than 0 or 1 is too much for you to handle. Much more comforting to try and file everything into 2 groups at max, good guy and badguy, left and right, black and white.
>instead of making it less reliable to execute (in time).
There is nothing unreliable about double tap dodge. It's not the games fault you're an inbred who can't plan ahead at all and just like to mash buttons. If you understand how your enemy works you will be able to reliably dodge them with 100% consistency.
>It's not like there can be recovery frames or cooldown periods after dashing at all.

Everything feels off about it. From the weird "point roughly in the direction of your enemy to kill them" to the general awkward controls. I do like the locations and objectives, that one boat level being my favorite, but that's not enough to save it.
Some of it can be blamed on the controller, some of it can be blamed on it being too ambitious for an N64 game. There were better first-person shooters on the console like Doom 64, but a lot of them were ruined by being too fucking dark and forgetting about the texture filtering which ruined the sprites.

The framerate is an n64 problem in general, not the end of the world. The movement speed is ideal for the pace of the game, it's not a fast paced shooter. It even has leaning. The draw distance is fine and rarely matters as occluded enemies aren't active unless set to be, it doesn't matter mostly because the game is corridor centric.

It feels different from most games. I don't know what you mean by off. The autoaim is toned down depending on the difficulty level which alters its activation range and its target in sight locking. Doom 64 isn't really too great, it's decent but it's got a few problems on the n64, namely the visibility which is just awful. You praise goldeneye a ton too, and it deserves it. It's got some very inventive level design, pacing which frequently introduces new things, surprises the player, and engages them in varied challenges. It's a very good game.

I have some deep concerns, namely being if the "fast paced" has been reduced to COD-tier gameplay. this has nothing to do with what I said
>What exactly is the problem with double tap to run? With pointless dedicated buttons for dodge and another for run you have sacrificed two keys that could have been used for other mechanics which would have resulted in a more complex and interesting game.
It's painful to have to do this constantly when frequently switching movement speeds, or in a side-scrolling game where you need to double-tap either left or right to run in that direction, directions which you'll constantly be changing. Or in Doom whete you can sprint in any direction, try imagining Doom with double-tap inputs for sprinting. PC games usually have enough buttons for a dedicated sprint button.
>However, needing to actual think when using a dodge or defensive manuever seems to make your head hurt so more simple games are more your speed.
There's no extra "thinking" involved with double-tap inputs. It's an input method which needlessly adds a delay to dodging and makes the game feel less responsive, making you prone to getting hit by lightning-fast attacks in the middle of a double-tap input. There's a place for this in more methodical games like the backflip in Castlevania: Rondo of Blood, but not in a fast-paced shooter like Unreal Tournament. Else you're better off with button combinations like Down+Left/Right+Jump for dodging since button combinations don't have a built-in input delay

>It's painful to have to do this constantly when frequently switching movement speeds,
Again with the limp dicked soyboy fingers excuse. Here's a few exercises for you, It's a very foreign concept to you but you should try it anyway:
https://www.webmd.com/osteoarthritis/ss/slideshow-hand-finger-exercises
>try imagining Doom with double-tap inputs for sprinting
You're always running in DOOM. Double tap is a non issue as it frees you up from needlessly holding down an extra button while running, which should help with that soy fingers issue you have trouble dealing with.
>PC games usually have enough buttons for a dedicated sprint button.
and many keys are prime real estate. There are plenty of keys so lets just map sprint to P then. Do you see how fucking stupid that is? If you don't need a dedicated key for a certain input then you should use that key for something else that is more important.
>There's no extra "thinking" involved with double-tap inputs
Recognizing tells and reacting is more thinking than just press magic button right before hit which makes every attack feel the same.
>It's an input method which needlessly adds a delay to dodging and makes the game feel less responsive
There is no delay and it doesn't make the game feel less responsive, it activates the moment you double tap. If you want it to come out faster then simply tap faster and stop drinking so much soy.
>No
Wonderful argumentation skills right there.
>try actually justifying why dodges need double-tap inputs but blocks and jumps don't.
They don't need double tap inputs and they don't need single tap inputs, necessity was never the argument here, it was never even mentioned before you brought it up, it's just a much smarter way to do things in order to maximize the amount of actions you can have the player do. Since you won't be dodging constantly due to cooldown/balance there is no reason to have a dedicated button, allowing the player to mash the magic button constantly to avoid all damage would be broken and destroy any challenge, which is why the mechanic has a cooldown/delay afterwards to make you vulnerable and prevent constant use. Double tap jump worked fine in Dark Souls since you weren't jumping all the time, it was very sparingly. This wouldn't work in a platformer where jumping is constant and no cooldown necessary to balance the mechanic. Since it is the core of the gameplay it gets a dedicated button. There is a heirarchy of buttons at play, whichever ones are the core and need to be used constantly and frequently get a single tap while ones that are used sparingly get a double. This is what your mixed race mystery meat brain cannot comprehend.
>Except mashing buttons is literally what you're doing with double taps.
