I really think Fallout 4 permanently changed people's attitudes. It's like the 9/11 of video games. Before that, video games were on a major decline of quality, but the industry wasn't quite shitting in our faces. This game was completely shitting on everything that the series stands for, and ignored the improvements made by New Vegas.

And then, about a month or so before release, we had the Boston Salt Party. Probably one of our best achievements as a collective. I think a disappointment on such a colossal scale really changes the attitude of most people.

It's basically the same vein as Watamote: you want the main character to get her shit together, start getting what they deserve, and end the series on a better note but the MC is just shit enough that you don't mind watching them fail.
Tomoko is a fairly rotten person with good intentions, but she actively despises those that do better than her, normalfags, and even shuts out her friend when she learns that she's done what tomoko can't. So while you want her to get popular you kind of get why she's failing.
Retsuko isn't as bad, but still only wanted to get married to get out of her shitty job, doesn't take any real steps to fix the issue and pretends to be nice while being just as rotten as the office kiss up who's name I can't recall. The deer. You want to root for retsuko, as you would a coworker in the same shit as you, but you can see why she's stuck in a dead-end job. That's my take on it.

To address your point, at first I thought that it was a sort of parodic commentary on the life of the average sararyman in japan, which is an extremely stressful, miserable life that's actually becoming a national problem there, but no, it's actually being all "see? it really isn't that bad!" when that ending, as I explained, is essentially encouraging and validating people who think being deppressed, miserable and stuck in a really shit job is something to be both respected and enjoyed.
Yes, the show has its funny moments and is all about hyperbolic representations of a sararyman's thoughts and lifestyle, but I'm sure as hell not fine with a show making light of and validating having a shit job with shit people leading a miserable life. I'm actually an accountant and I worked in the accounting department of a company for a while, the first year was nice and uneventful, but the second year a change in management occurred and oh boy did everything went straight to shit, I was on the brink of getting very sick from stress.
