There are several games in the series and it looks like the most recent one got some mixed reviews. Which game is considered the best?

Most will likely say SB4 Sumeragi, the expansion of SB4. It's got the biggest roster, the most combat options and it's the most recent besides Yuki-den.

Personally I prefer SB3 Utage because the stages are more fun to go through, the item system is much simpler, won't force you to micromanage your inventory every time you clear a stage and doesn't have some of SB4's more dubious additions like analog waggling and rank.

SB2 Heroes has the most fun stages in the series but the core gameplay is severely outdated by the sequels.

SB4? Yeah, it sucks fat gorilla dick in that regard but, to be fair, so did SB3 though this one at least had more than 3 or 4 stages that let you have fun.

Getting the vanilla version of these games is always a mistake.

Again, toss up between SB3 Utage and SB4 Sumeragi.

How's the Dolphin emulator? SB3 Utage was released on the Wii.

One thing I never liked about the Dynasty Warriors series is that you never felt the weight of your attacks, nor that you were actually attacking anything. you'd just press the attack button a couple of times and pick up a horde of enemies throwing them around like they were knats, Sengoku basara felt like it had a little more meat to it in that area as well as the combos feeling more like they were from an action game.

Dunno if Dynasty Warriors 8 addressed my issues

Well I played Basara 3 on dolphin and it didn't feel any meatier than your average DW.

That being said I think DW5 is the meatiest one so far.

8 is just good mechanically.
