In case anyone is curious about LoL still beating Dota, it seems like things are getting Rocky with Riot (I'm not making another thread for another shitty assfaggot game let alone an assfaggot game full of Sjw shit), and the Riot-Tencent Gestapo had to do some damage control once the article got published on some EESPORZ site.
https://web.archive.org/web/20180814040130/https://dotesports.com/league-of-legends/news/riot-strained-relationship-tencent-declining-players-mobile-games-information-32079
>The interesting parts, however, are the details about Riot's declining playerbase and Tencent's own pursuit of mobile gaming, which have caused both companies to butt heads more than once in the past.
>When mobile gaming began to overtake "hardcore" gaming, Tencent apparently approached Riot about turning its only game, League of Legends, into a mobile title. Riot declined, saying that the game's experience "couldn't be replicated on smartphones." Tencent then reportedly created their own mobile game, Wangzhe Rongyao, roughly translated to English as Honor of Kings, in 2015. When Riot discovered early screenshots of the game, which has now arrived in North America as Arena of Valor, some employees weren't happy. "We were stunned," one of the former Riot staffers that The Information interviewed said. "They were blatantly ripping off our intellectual property."
>On top of that, The Information reports that Tencent has moved on to PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds and Fortnite, focusing its efforts now on the stock owned in both games' developers, Bluehole and Epic Games respectively. The sudden shift is due to a rapid decline in League's playerbase and profits, which has resulted in significant layoffs at Riot's worldwide offices. When The Information approached CEO Laurent about these declines, he stated that they haven't actually been that significant. This was despite former and current employees telling The Information that Riot leadership held a massive, company-wide meeting in March to inform workers that the company would reach a deficit if they continued on the current path.
Here's the damage control from the Riot-Tencent Gestapo:
>"League numbers are down from their peak, but it's still one of the most-played games in the world and we're very happy with the numbers, and we think some of the new content we're putting out soon can only help with player numbers," Riot said. "Basically, League is doing incredibly well by any measure except its own very high watermark. "
Riot deserve worse for all the shit they've done.
>>15296551
They don't care because normal fags will move on if they have Steam, or even flat out refuse to give out their personal info just to buy a game nowadays. You also have GoG (which isn't much better, but they don't mandate you to give out your number like Gaben and Steam…yet).

It's definitely a form of gambling. It's on the level of pachinko parlors operations, the excuse of it being just for entertainment, when the metal balls are used as currency to obtain prizes, which are then given to a small store outside for money. Most likely developers will scramble to make their own online store front to try and be the next big thing. I mean EA fucked off from Steam years ago, Activision is moving to Battle.net, Epic has their thing that also serves as central hub for all Unreal Engine tools for game development and modding, & Bethesda is pushing their own platform. Then you have Ubisoft with Uplay but they just force it on you even if you buy it on Steam, and GOG Galaxy which isn't mandatory yet and currently only functions as way to get online multiplayer going for modern titles.
Also word on the net seems to be that companies want to move over to streaming games. Probably as a heavy handed way to prevent piracy.

Digital copies have no value whatsoever (and if its connected to a client/service, no control) physical copies you also have control over your games unless it requires internet connection to a service in which case its no different from a steam code in a box which might as well not even be physical media
Digital downloads are not a "fantastic idea on paper" whatsoever except in terms of convenience and considering all the baggage that came with it I would say "no thanks" to that garbage
Valve has already irreparably damaged things beyond repair, now companies know to get their own clients and services and retain as much control over their customers as possible through DRM and other measures; they've also fostered a massive community of retards who worship them and will follow and defend them to the death no matter what, the fact that it took this long with so many companies now trying to get a piece of the market and Valve is only now starting to feel a little bit of pressure on its decline is ridiculous

Cloud gaming services aren't just something they're *talking about* there are companies who are doing this. They say that the next consoles might *just* be cloud gaming boxes, and of course, because it's right there in the forefront of gaming, PCs will be there too.
There's advantages to this, I suppose, the idea that you can play pretty much any new game because it's not your PC processing/running it, but then thing slike graphics levels go away because it becomes a one size fits all approach, and the only option you get is whatever resolution your monitor is. I don't want that, and I know that pretty much no one else here does either, but this is what they're going to sell to the normalfags, and they're going to love it. I want to say it's a good thing that more distribution platforms are seeing some love, but at the same time I get the feeling it's because of publishers forcing people to use their own platforms to play their games like Fortnite or Overwatch rather than people healthily realizing you don't need to use the same distributor (Steam) for precisely everything. Then again, it goes without saying that for a lot of people Steam is just a CSGO/DOTA 2/PUBG/maybe TF2 platform, nothing more; and when you consider what games are popular now and how they're not on Steam, this makes sense.
I just wish it was because people started using GOG more or something like that, not that they're giving games to Activision and Tencent through Epic.

But the thing is, there's nothing wrong with Steam having everything. There's no exclusivity, and calling it a monopoly (because that word gets thrown around a lot) is fucking retarded. Steam tells you to publish your game everywhere, if companies choose not to, that's on them. Conversely, withdrawing your games from Steam to create YET ANOTHER fucking platform that no one wants to use, that's how we ended up with Uplay, Origin and the Wangblows Store. What are their reasonings? Money is definitely one, they see that 30% cut as unacceptable, and they think Steam is ineffectual as an anti-piracy measurement .. and they're right, but that was always the idea. Steam allowing extra DRM is part of the problem. Denuvo doesn't even delay pirates anymore, they eat through that shit like mice through Swiss cheese, there are people who legitimately believe you can make crackproof programs, and that's stupid. Give a cracker a Fort Knox of anti-piracy and watch him destroy it.

Denuvo very much delays the pirates by a long margin. The only cracker that was able to spoof denuvo was doing it in a dirty way, not actually removing it and then he got caught anyway. Therefore, pirates are not able to remove denuvo but work around it. With a few more concepts, denuvo could be the ultimate anti-piracy measure. Besides, denuvo games hardly get cracked nowadays.

You realize that a very prominent denuvo cracker just got v& by the hungarian police? And Denuvo will be ramping up their efforts; there were only a few people cracking denuvo as it was (CPY, Baldman, Voksi), one of those is retired and one is now legally unable to do anything now. They aren't impenetrable but they will delay pirates enough to where the companies will be fine with the results and this will only continue as companies ramp up Denuvo usage and throw increasing amounts more money at them

But it's actually a near-monopoly though. GoG used to act like a small competitor, until it stopped caring about old vidya and went Steam-lite with Galaxy (which is mostly optional, except for a few games using online multiplayer) and the (((indies)))/early access shit. What the fuck are you talking about, GOG has more old games than ever you fucking goof. The thing is, GOG has a real problem which is that faggots post their installers to torrent sites day 1 every single time, without exception. Companies that make modern games see this, and this is why they don't want to publish with GOG. Why the fuck would they? GOG Galaxy is a nice app, it detects pirated copies of GOG games, doesn't disable them, just says "hey, we don't know if you have a license for this, but we assume you or someone else using this computer does…" Also won't update because you need a license to qualify for that.
You can say til the cows come home that piracy does not affect sales, but that is not 100% true, and it never has been, and it never will be. There are people who choose not to pay because they don't have to, not because they can't. The idea that "it's not a lost sale, cause they wouldn't pay if they couldn't get it for free anyway" only applies to SOME level of people but not every single pirate.
There's a reason why GOG has such a huge catalog of old games, and that's because they're dead. No one else is selling them, so they post em for cheap and people can buy em for cheap. No one cares about them because they aren't worked on anymore, no one was relying on the money they generate, if they generate $50 that's good enough.
You ain't gonna see a new AAA game on Steam because of the GOG installers. You can't tell a small developer that piracy doesn't cause lost sales when he can load up TPB, look at say Terraria 1.3.5.3 and see that 10 people are downloading it this very second. For a 228 mb game, that means that there are constantly people downloading it, cause even shitty BR internet can download that in less than 5 minutes.
You can't prove the kikes wrong when there's overwhelming evidence to make them look right. Denuvo is the fault of smug arseholes who used to say "day 1 pirate" all day every day.

GoG being about old games didn't make it a competitor to Steam at all, it served a different niche and market entirely
Them slowly turning into Steam-lite is what made them a "competitor" to Steam to begin with if we're being honest; as long as they remain DRM-free and don't censor I'm fine with them
Galaxy is a bit of a worrying trend though. To an extent I can sort of understand why it would be used for multiplayer shit, its a lot easier for GoG to put everything through that shit to their servers and whatnot and since they're handling the multiplayer (I think) it makes sense
Doesn't make it right though since it is multiplayer DRM, but its hard for me to shit on them if they're providing their servers to use for it through Galaxy and making it as easy as possible; plus creating multiplayer peer-to-peer code would be pretty much impossible for all the games present (especially with how many of the companies are defunct in question), or at the very least grossly economically unfeasible

GOG basically fucked themselves out of the ability to go DRM. The minute they do they immediately lose control of their entire catalog. It's somewhat a reverse of the situation with steam where, to the contrary where if steam goes anticonsumer or dies your library is at the whim of Valve and whether or not they'll put out a crack so that you can run the installer files without being connected Backups haven't been able to be actually used since 2009 and the feature is basically worthless the minute GOG implodes or goes anti consumer they'll have 0 control of their library as it exists as installers short of potential threats of releasing their own installers on torrenting sites with malware. Each download is equated to be worth more than what these games cost to be made, and they do it on a per-game+per-download basis at exorbitant prices, and I don't see how ANY judge can abide this without being paid under the table.

Even every PS2 game released is only just over 2TB, I'd bet there are plenty of datahoarders out there who have full copies of those. Where you start running into trouble is the sweet spot where HDD storage isn't cheap enough to justify hoarding the games. For example some PS3 games are 50+GB, too big for the average person to grab the entire collection. Eventually storage will get cheaper and you will be able to download a pack of every PS3 game ever, but there will always be a ~15 year gap before disk storage technology advances enough where you can justify an entire generation of games without thinking too much about it. Those are the only games that are vulnerable to copyright pressure I think

Valve's user base can drop off 50%, and they're still not going to go under. They could be having homosexual Australian orgies all day every day and paying people to do it, but they're not paying for super expensive shit anymore. Even if you constantly download, uninstall and redownload the same games all day every day it's not going to hurt their bottom line. Steam earned approximately $4,300,000,000 in 2017. That's THEIR CUT of sales (so the actual sales were closer to $30 billion). They employ 360 people (as of 2016).
Even if their user numbers dropped by a large amount, it's never going to fully drop off. They don't need a worst case scenario exit strategy to make all games 100% available to their users in that type of a situation, that was never feasibly going to happen. Even if Gabe had actually intended (or never intended) on this being an eventuality, it won't come to happen within our lifetimes.

The main issue with Visual Novels is the oversatured market of the genre, so it's pretty easy to find out a lot of VNs are garbage by default. That's not why people are stopping Dota. They are stopping Dota because Valve ruined the game with the 7.0 update. The last hope players had was this year's battlepass (The International compendium) with role queue (being able to select your role in the game before you find a match). Unfortunately Valve jew'd out, making it so only players that bought the battlepass could use role queue, effectively splitting the already dying playerbase in half.

Yes Anon I get it. It's popular to hate Dota on /v/ and you want to fit in for once. But let's reset for a moment. This thread is about why Steam is in decline, and Dota has been one of Steam's top games pretty much since it came out. So when talking about the decline of Steam, you must also talk about the decline of the Dota playerbase. The fact is, many people quit after 7.0, because it was clear that Valve had 'jumped the shark' and had made the decision to dumb down Dota so it was more watchable as an e-sport. Since 7.0 it's only been getting worse.
Still don't believe me? Look at Artifact. It's the writing on the wall that Dota is dead, and Valve killed it for profit. Valve themselves are essentially acknowledging that they killed their money cannon called Dota so they've decided to capitalize on the corpse they created by shuffling out a card game based on it of all things. Take my words or don't, but I've been playing Dota since 2013, and I've seen this decline first hand.

What you're thinking about are kinetic VNs, which require pretty much zero input from the player and have a pretty straightforward storyline. Those does fit the definition you're thinking about.
There are however VNs that actually require player input and possess another type of gameplay on the side (either simulation, strategy, or detective stuff) such as
>Ace Attorney
>(Shin) Hayarigami
>Tantei Jinguuji Saburou
>Tokyo Twilight Ghosthunters
>Utawarerumono

Listen to this when it comes to tf2, alright?
The median average for drops in a week is like 10, sometimes there's rare occurances where you know it goes up a little it goes down a little but 10 a week is sufficient.
Now with those 10 items assuming you got all weapons (you probably got something fucking worthless like a decal tool or a giftapult but let's say it's all weapons. You have right there 5 scrap metal out of the 10 weapons. Now out of every 9 scrap metal you get a refined metal.
Now we go to the trading scene where the retardation really kicks into high gear. Traders have set the price of a key at ~33 refined. Maybe it's gone down but at some point it was 30. Now we take that 33 refined break it down into scrap, so it's NINE TIMES as much. and you got 297 scrap metal now, assuming you get your 5 scrap a week it will take you about 60 weeks of grinding out metal to get 1 key.
The rigged economy in tf2 is SO BAD that it will legitimately take you OVER A YEAR to get a $2.50 key. A $2.50 key that, might I add, has been literally useless since like 2014 when they started introducing cases.

That's the whole reason I got into steam in the first place was because it was easy access to big budget triple A titles that were being ported from console. All he's done thus far is just report on any trickle(or lack thereof) of shit valve feeds him, but when it's shit like the fact that not even gabe newell's son can get his hands on Source 2, or Left 4 dead 3 being shitcanned because they couldn't decided to use Source 2 or Unreal, and HL episode 3 was cancelled when employees started quitting valve, it's not exactly going to bring people in.

>don't actually know, never played a battle royale game, at least not knowingly. I've been really good at avoiding trendy games without trying for some time now.
I've tried Fortnite at a lil cousin's house. I honestly don't understand the appeal.
You spawn from a vantage point, from that horrid looking bus thing, and that's kind of neat I guess, being able to choose where you wanna start based on pre-existing knowledge of the map and from other players' actions, except you then basically have one of two scenarios happen:
>you spawn in the middle of a fucking war zone and get ambushed in ten seconds flat, wasting about 5 minutes joining a new game
>you get to some isolated shanty town, walk around aimlessly for like thirty minutes seeing a killfeed that slowly moves forward, then you get to either build shit until someone else snipes you out of your misery or shoot really unsatisfying hitscan weapons with limited maneuvering at a garish looking opponent
I just don't get it. Even tc_hydro with three players had more action going on. It's worse than any other shooter I've ever played in all departments. The only two positive things about it is the spawning mechanics and the quickbuild that lets you do fun shit like constructing an elaborate looking fence and then sitting behind a rock in wait of curious opponents. There's nothing to be gained from playing it that can't be achieved elsewhere.

I mean, outside of MAYBE Sonic Mania, can you name a good game that came out with it? Chances are games are going to be so boring or horrible no one will even try cracking them.

Not really though, I mean sure, a lot of the Big guys For you might stick to steam for their releases but there are other places to get games. Especially if you want to buy Japanese Amateur developed titles.

people make duplicate accounts to avoid bans and there are all sorts of bot accounts for trading and advertisement and there are some who make a new account and email for every purchase so they can easily trade or give away the game

They are in decline because games get more and more pozzed and cucked. That's why.
You can thank the jews for that.

how about you buy it from the original dev instead botnet enthusiast. if the dev only wants to put it on steam than don't buy the game and the dev is faggot anyway and the game is likely shit so don't bother.
