Just jump in, it's not that hard to figure things out if you're not underage. I would know, because I fucked around in the old fan translated copies while I was underage. Only thing you might need to study is game design, art, and if you're going to customize the game with scripting, Ruby. More studying is required if using MV since it uses HTML5 bullshit with JS plugins. It's not as intuitive. Although I hear MV games are shit anyway because surprise, HTML5 games tend to be bloated as fuck. So you might want to go with XP, VX, or VX Ace. VX Ace being the most modern, but they're all good and work roughly the same.

Mystery Dungeon Maker, the software/engine is pretty much owned by one company; Spike Chunsoft. Whereas RPGmaker is owned by Enterbrain. All games, Izuna the unemployed ninja, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, Etrian Mystery Dungeon, chocobo mystery dungeon, and much more all have to share with chunsoft.
And it's all the same gameplay formula/engine. Why wouldn't Spike Chunsoft set up something where a person can come in and basically create their own mystery dungeon, their own story and shit like that? graphics, sounds, and everything else, all just waiting to be utilized.
