I've been considering making a list thread seeking to create a list documenting historical games. When I say historical I mean games that created a genre and games that formed a genre to its modern state, like Street Fighter 2 did for the fighting genre as far as I understand.
Does this sound interesting to anyone? I wouldn't make it while a list thread such as this was already up. Just trying to field interest.

are you going to divide them by year or by genre?
e0d4e8 No.15277796
>>15277777 (checked)
I would divide it by genre creation points and by significant genre shifts/ defining points in a genre, as many genres were created in different years and there's many years where nothing of historical significance happened. I'd be focusing on origin points for all genres, such as Rogue for its respective genre, and any significant genre-wide genre-defining shifts, such as the previously mentioned SFII.

For instance, I don't think there would be any games listed from the past five years as I'm not aware of any that would qualify as genre creating nor genre shifting

Allow me to broaden this -
I would also seek to mark the start of technological advancements such as the first isometric game, the first pseudo-3D game, and the first light gun game, to name a few.
Certainly I'll need to have a more focused approach as to how I will format the list whenever I start the endeavor. At this point I'm still brainstorming what should and should not be a part of the list. Like I wouldn't list Zelda 2 as "first Zelda with magic bar" as that's insignificant compared to "what is the first point and click adventure" or "what is the first discrete logic game". I imagine most of what will end up on this list will be games that aren't considered that great, but I think that's the nature of seeking origin points as opposed to greatest hits.

maybe you should divide them by genre creators/very influential and milestones like first game with x or first game that used y
e0d4e8 No.15277911
>>15277851
I'm thinking this will be the most sensible approach. Essentially making multiple lists but in the end combining them all into one image for ease of sharing.
>Games that created a genre
>Games that redefined/very influential to a genre
>Games with firsts, such as first game where you can marry/date your waifu (romance options) or first game that allows you to play over LAN
>First instances of a technological advancements, e.g. isometric, first to use a steering wheel, etc.
At this point I'm going to focus on narrowing it down to be more clear and concise so that I don't create a sprawling mess. The potential for this to broaden in scope beyond what would be easily handleable is something I need to keep in mind and attempt to keep it focused without meandering into extraneous territory.

Not worth it at all, just buy an used 360 E, modchip it and play your japanese games on it, that fucker has a mere 5% failure rate, actually keeps the heat out of the console and makes zero noise when running games off the hard drive, the only issue is that it doesn't have component/vga inputs, only hdmi.
Alternatively you could buy a XNA/devkit xbox 360, they're region free, have twice the ram and can run pirated games, but they're kinda expensive ($200-$300) and rare.

To be fair at least some of the systems that don't fail are pretty solid. I've got an Elite (original model with a small redesign that got rid of a lot of the RROD issues) and it's still running just fine after all these years. The ones that do survive should be fine so long as you don't do anything retarded with them like keep them in a unvented or hot area.
