There are shades. The justifier, as >>15275330 said, is in the fact that the protagonist is methodically killing shitbag goblins with the most mundane means possible. Iron swords, torches as bludgeons, thieved weapons, shield bashes & rim strikes, sling bullets, poison, asphyxiants, so on. The setup for killing big guys tends to involve a lot of setup and a little mutual maiming before he gets the cliche keikaku killshot in. I happen to like it, because it asks the question, 'what happens at the bottom rung of a cliche JRPG world where there are no content filters and no stops on the horror train of inhuman monsters in low-intensity total war with all mankind?'
The answer is that small settlements with 'small' problems- like cannibal rapist troglodytes with an average size of and with all the moral sense of a psychopathic child- get ignored by state troops due to fighting the nondescript forces of Chaos, get ignored by hotshot adventurers because the work isn't glamorous or hugely profitable, and generally get shafted by receiving no support at all or receiving foolhardy rookies (often children and teenagers) who don't understand that going into a nest of hunchbacked green Viet Cong shits with no experience, the wrong equipment, and eyes full of stars is a horrible idea that ends in rape & dismemberment. Goblin Slayer is an autist on a one-man genocide crusade who does this work that no one else credible will, because of a very predictable vendetta revolving around everyone he loved or cared about in his hometown getting exterminated. As described above, he does it very well, and does it his own pragmatically slaughterous way.
Don't let me oversell it, mind. In spite of this very grim, gritty selling point, it's still only a moderately/mildly mature work on the low end of seinen, really kind of bleeding into shonen with an edge, with dashes of moeshit (not bad necessarily, but somewhat incongruous depending on your taste) and a feelgood party assembling a ways in around our wet blanket of a protagonist to deal with a more nuanced and insidious threat than 'wild goblins in the forest hills and dales.' But then it whiplashes rather hard with more guro, more rape, or the implied possibility of one or both. If you don't mind that whiplash and the fact it isn't all grim all the time, and just want to watch 99% irredeemable subhuman things get their skulls smashed in, it's an alright read.
