Then you get to end game and suddenly you need to put in a lot of effort into getting groups and such…. unless you know people from somewhere else or real life playing it then that part is easy. Unless you've got friends that are playing RIGHT NOW, no. You would be better suited doing literally anything else. i resubbed for the last expac and almost immediately unsubbed again. they made the leveling, which used to be almost too quick, unbearably slow in preparation for the people who are going to level fresh alts for the allied race bullshit, and that leveling just plain wasn't fun because all joking aside every single quest in wow boils down to "bring me <x> that you have sourced yourself", "bring me <x> that you get from killing <y>" or "kill <x> amount of <y>". the raiding is all over the fucking place and is either trivially, insultingly easy or vanilla AQ40 levels of absurdly hard/long. there is fun to be had in it - personally i had a lot of fun soloing old raid content for pets and transmog items - but i reached a point where i was like "why am i subscribing to play an MMO completely alone, where when i'm forced to play with other people they're aggressively retarded and actively lower my enjoyment level"
ironically enough though i got into FFXIV and i'm having a way better time, although i'm 1 level below cap on that and i'm already starting to lose interest. the story at least is a lot more interesting and the game is a lot more open about how it's best enjoyed alone, not to mention i find the average player to be much, much more tolerable than wow. it has a seriously huge amount of content (something like 250 main story quests, not to mention several hundred side quests as well as tons of dungeons/raids and a couple PVP modes). it does still do the annoying little thing where occasionally you will be forced to do a dungeon or something to advance the story which means sitting in a queue (unless you're a tank) but i can forgive it because i like the aesthetics and story

Raiding is done a lot better in XIV imo. The only bad aspect about it is that people will want to rush content, which means it might be hard to get clears if you didn't clear it.
But on the positive side the endgame is only 8 people. Which means you only got to find 7 people to play with. The fights are much more difficult in terms of mechanics and needing to know your class than anything in WoW though. But since you're only with 8, it's much more healthy and bearable. For a while WoW cataclysm supported endgame being 10 or 25 man and every guild just switched to 10 mans since it was much more fun. In wrath you also had it but 10 man gave less loot so people still did both modes.
20 man + content in modern mmos just isn't fun. It's difficult, and there will be way bigger entry barriers to enter groups just due to size and planning. Even though a game like XIV requires you to know your class more to kill savage encounters than playing WoW mythic mode.

Problem with XIV is that its best to just sub 1 week before major patch, get all the gear needed for next raid, then clear next major raid and unsub. Other reason to play would be ultimate fights, but they're insanely difficult and need a very good group of players to do it.
SB definitely isn't cataclysm. Cataclysm WoW was terrible, everything beyond cataclysm has been even worse. WoW directly insults player intelligence by making classes the most braindead things ever. The biggest barrier to completing mythic content is the community. It has become so incredibly easy and unskillful. Yet guilds still have ridiculously long application requirements to join because apparently everyone playing the game is a retard who can't figure out how the press their 2 button rotation.

WoW is great compared to other MMOs, there's always something to do but I do however agree, that you need to either have friends or make friends to play with, even if you do decide to play solo, there's always something to do, whether is pushing your skills at the game either in PvE or PvP content, or mindlessly grinding for mount, achievements, pets, transmog etc.
There's always something that feels worth doing, if you like the faction pride sense of the game that vanilla has, that's what blizzard is trying to get back into the game, although I'm sure it's never going to be like it was in Vanilla since now you can play both factions on the same realm and getting to max level is a lot faster than back in the day, I hope they do at least a decent job at creating some of that rivalry feeling that the game used to have, the money is only an issue if you're poor, most people can afford the subscription fee, and you can always cancel if you don't want to pay it or play anymore so it's not that bad.
I'm not trying to ride blizzard's dick or anything but I play the game a lot and I think it's great, but I can obviously see that it has flaws and it's not for everyone. I suggest giving it a try and see how you like it.

Not that I want to defend wow, but it's all really just an excuse to keep making more expansions. The story is written in a way that forces confrontations between the important/popular characters, to get them screen time, and to conclude in an excuse for more "content". To Blizzard's credit, they put some effort into it, with CGI cinematics, in game cinematics, comics and novels. It's still just video game shlock story, but it doesn't take itself seriously, and neither should you.
