Start with 4 then play 2, from there you can choose 1 or 5 if you prefer story or gameplay respectively. As for 5 there's a cracked version of the PC demo which fixes the mistranslations. There's still a few minor graphical bugs though.

1 had great characters and story. 2 was incredibly mediocre and forgettable. What the fuck is 3. The sequel to the first one was bad, but had a cute imouto that doesn't redeem the game.

I have about 20ish hours on D2 on my PSP and I'm only at like…level 30 across the board and over halfway through the game. For some reason levelling up felt more consistent in D1 whereas 2 feels like a fucking slog for no reason. The felony system is kinda cute but is fucking tedious to get to a 300% xp boost for one character when you have to grind out 10 floors at least to get 1-2 felonies.

How similar is the rest of the series to the NDS version? I found it got real grindy very quickly.

1 was the only game where I enjoyed the cast and story and I feel it had the best music, but 2 definitely had the best gameplay even if IMO it didn't have much else going for it.

3 was definitely the worst, the game was pretty short with a bad setting and it ruined the gameplay by making defense useless.

I'm kinda tempted to pirate 5 since I haven't played a Disgaea game in ages but I'm guessing its mostly the same as 3 & 4

Earlier is better because it'll be rough going back from about 4's QOL changes, but the games aren't direct sequels to each other and the story is shit except the first one.

You can start anywhere, the later games have better mechanics. But the game overall is only slightly improved with each release and the game-play relatively stays the same. The first game has the best "story" so its probably the one you want to start with but the story's are not really the draw to these games. They are cool because of the amount of crazy stuff you can do with the TRPG tactics to become overpowered.

The really fucked up thing IIRC is that even with animations turned off in D2 before patching you'd still get freezes with team attacks and I think fire spells, pretty sure bricking your console was restricted to a couple of character specials (Flonne and laharls imouto) and you could avoid that with the animations turned off

People were loading their saves twice to avoid freezes and the older the model ps3 you were using the more likely you were to get game crashes

Because NISA is lazy as fuck and tries to do every port without hard coding

No. The only person that knew anything about PC porting left the company since they wouldn't listen to him to "save time/money" and NISA refuses to support a after a set number of months after release. They're already preping to abandon Ys VIII despite not being fixed and the translation still being fucked.

You're better off just emulating instead of waiting for something that will never happen.

It's also worth checking out Makai Kingdom and Phantom Brave.Phantom Brave is also probs the easiest game of all of them to exploit due to how it handles titles. Ps2 versions are fine, Wii version of Phantom Brave would probably run better due to dolphin simply being better.
