This is not that hard. You can learn all the mechanics for a game from a wiki in an hour. There's always some ideosyncracy of the mechanics that you're goona need to look up to not flounder in the game. Just part of the genre.

By that standard, Deus Ex must be shit as well because that had clunky combat.
Morrowind has pretty much that same dice rolls decide hit/miss gameplay that Arena and Daggerfall had, minus the mouse swinging. At higher levels you stop missing 90% of the time. Criticizing an RPG for deciding combat based on your stats and the dice rolls involved is laughable.

Combat is, like you said, clunky to say the least. There are no actual choices in the game until the very end except for little things like

Honestly, the swish swish whack meme is the only redeeming part of Morrowind's combat to me. That, and the directional hits that made you think for a few more seconds. Everything else about the combat was pretty bland. Redeeming features of Morrowind are the lore, story, atmosphere, music, world design, and sandbox capabilities.
All I'm arguing is that it doesn't deserve to be placed over Gothic and Fallout: New Vegas.

The problem is that people complain about it without understanding the actual function of it. If you take Skyrim and break it down:
Low Level Enemy:
>70 HP
>20 damage
High Level Enemy:
>7000 HP
>200 damage
On the other hand, in Morrowind:
Low Level Enemy:
>70 HP
>20 damage
High Level Enemy:
>700 HP
>70 damage
The reason the game works like this is because of the 'swish-swish' combat. The game makes use of attributes and skills in a major way, because it employs 'to-hit' chance rather than raw damage as a basis of calculation. The result is that the latter games have a massive amount of Hit Point bloat, turning enemies into effective bullet-sponges. The amount of input you provide to the game - in terms of clicking - is no different, and in most cases, it will take you more swings to take down your average Dragon than even one of the tanky bosses, like Bear Hircine or Karstaag. Morrowind's system supports PCs and NPCs alike, whereas both Oblivion and Skyrim have had to dramatically bloat NPC statistics in order to maintain a degree of artificial difficulty. When asked what is more unrealistic - for your sword-swings to not damage the opponent, or for
Is it a perfect system? Fuck no. But the same people who criticize it have zero problem ignoring the fact that the only RPGs which have manage to do better are games that don't have a leveling mechanic. If you changed the game to replace the "whish" sounds from a miss with clanking against armor or whatever, you'd alleviate half of the problems. It's a relic of the times that it didn't happen.
The only unforgivable thing that Morrowind does in combat terms is, due to the transfer to the XBox, it changed the directional inputs from the Daggerfall mouse swings to movement based inputs. The more pressing problems are the things that got cut out - the ability to climb walls, namely, though there are a few other factors involved. But the real kicker is that people in these threads have the audacity like the dumb niggers they are to say that of these games have good combat. They fucking don't. Not even Mountain Blade. Especially not even fucking Gothic.

I've always wondered why people post this kind of charts/rankings.
Are they trying to fit in? There's absolutely no way anyone fully agrees with all the tiers presented here, they might pick a few to circlejeck over but overall the picture is very different. What happens when a game they like is low and a game they hate is high? You can bet your ass they're going to stick by their opinion and call everyone else contrarians faggots/contrarians whenever they raise and objection and disagree. It's like asking for at least a little bit of your personal taste to be validated and approved while conveniently ignoring the other part where the "majority" thinks you're a tasteless mouthbreather simpleton or a pretentious fuckwit.
Also, trying to claim a consensus in place like /v/ is sheer fucking folly, compromised of too many goddamn people not to mention that at any given time a large part of its regular user is asleep or at work/school while the other is actually posting on the board due to time differences, "general" opinions might differ a lot depending of days of the week of hours of the day.

Then you can role play multiple people and getting different buffs depending on how you role played was cool but it kinda made it so that you had to play a character with a certain personality to get the best out of it.

Putting aside how silly it is to try and divide dozens of games which wildly differ from each other in various aspects into linear set tiers which don't even describe which aspect tbey're using to divide these games into tiers to begin with, I believe that Gothic should be at least in the same tier, if not higher than Morrowind.
I remember the two strongest aspects of Morrowind were its worldbuilding and its atmosphere, which is propped up by the worldbuilding and music. But Gohic also has very good atmosphere, and on top of that it's better in terms of skill abstraction. Take swordfighting for example; in Morrowind, low swordfighting skill is represented by the infamous whoosh whoosh, which is disliked because the swinging animation is the same. Meanwhile in Gothic, when you're shit at swordfighting, you swing your sword like a retarded nigger, and gaining skill levels makes you swing with more finesse. It shows that more competent people worked on it.

Let's say I know 10 strength means I do 20 damage, how do I know what type of damage 11 will do? It looks like CPRGs require previous knowledge of D&D rules that many people don't have since it was never popular in their country at the time.

In a simple sense, big number = good.
Dicerolls work depending on the weapon. For example:
>Shitty Sword - 1d4 damage
means damage is calculated by rolling one four-sided die. The lowest you'll hit is 1 while the highest you'll hit is 4.
>Good Sword of Swording - 2d6
means damage is calculated by rolling two six-sided die. The lowest you'll hit is 2, the highest would be 12.
Strength can only act as a modifier. Shit strength will take damage away, good strength adds to it. That depends on the game. Generally it will say if it adds something like "+2" or some shit based on a chart that you can't see.

>In a simple sense, big number = good
It's the opposite in the early version of D&D. You wanted your THAC0, to hit armor class 0, value to be as low as possible, and preferrably negative. After you've rolled your 1-20 dice in the attack roll, the roll is compared to the THACO minus the armor class of the defender. If the roll is above or equal to this figure, or if you roll a perfect 20, it's a hit. The attacker wants the THACO low as that makes the combined figure lower and easier to break. Conversely, the defender wants a negative armor class since that makes the figure higher, minus minus becomes plus.

What exactly the numbers mean is different from game to game. Generally a higher number is better, but there might be exceptions in older games. Not all games follow the D&D rules, so learning those will only be useful for D&D-based games.
I'll let you in on a little secret: unless you are trying to powergame your stats are not that important. Just find out what the range of values is (e.g. 6-18, or 1-100) and then build the character around what your idea of it would be (i.e. when making a fighter focuse strength and stamina, not intelligence). Min-maxing the perfect character only matters if you want to play on the highest difficult or if you are going for a special challenge (like playing a game with a party system solo).
What's a good RPG to start with? I don't know, the genre is so large that its sub-genres are entire genres of their own. I'm just going to throw out some suggestions, but there is a ton of other games you could start with:
> Infinity Engine series
Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale in particular. Planescape Torment plays like shit, it's the type of game you play for the story. BG1 is not that great in hindsight, needs some modding first to get it up to standard. BG2 starts out at higher levels (it is a direct sequel to the first game), so that might be a bit overwhelming. The Icewind Dale game are a good entry, but they are mostly about combat, the party characters are all player-made and have no interaction.
> Divine Divinity
A single-player action-RPG. It looks like Diablo, but it's a real RPG with an overworld. The beginning is pretty tedious though: you are stuck with a dungeon that goes on forever and has just skeletons. Once you make it past that you are good to go
> Nox
Another action RPG, although more action than RPG.
> King's Bounty: The Legend (and Armored Princess)
Mostly a tactics game with RPG elements
>Deus Ex, System Shock II
RPGs that play like FPS. Reward methodical exploration, resource management and thinking before jumping in head-first.

Start with a modern game such as F:NV and then play the older Fallouts, this is enough for you to get the general logic behind the genre.
To get what stats and what they mean and limits It's recommended that you read the manual (a must on older games), but it varies from game to game and system to system. Might and Magic goes to bullshit levels soon and consistency doesn't matter while Arcanum stays more grounded with stats limit being on the 20 and 8 being the start for a regular human. In general, if you are a warrior you put on strenght, just follow as it goes and it will be fine.
And you really shouldn't start with D&D crpgs unless you have a good grasp of the tabletop mechanics or you are going to be dealing with shit like >>15284869.

Well, sort of. You have to keep in mind that making an ideal character is not as simple as "pump everything into one stat", so it requires a lot of experimentation. That alone makes it harder in a meta-sense to me. You might also need the extra optimization if you want to beat a game the way it was not designed to. I mean something like vid related: the game expects you have a party of six, but this guy does fights this boss alone.

namely fetch quest design, slow/useless walking across a ton of near empty maps, a crafting system that seems cool but is really just "get better rated competent for an extra 3 damage/protection", a really annoying merchant setup, and the game starts to drag by levels 12-15 where combat becomes very samey of "activate shield, use special abilities, wait for cooldown and repeat" and the game fails to grab you or make sense of why you're doing what you're doing
still it's a pretty solid game and better than most of the current competition

You're not going to be able to self-enchant good stuff without modding. You can permanently enchant almost anything, but you need to have a grand soul gem with either a Golden Saint or Ascended Sleeper soul. The best reason to level up and use enchanting is how large the difference between unskilled and maxed out enchanting is when it comes to charge expenditure and recharging efficiency. The most spectacular use of this is using the Vampiric Ring and the Black Hands Dagger, both of which become almost usable at will.
