7 wasn't a good "resident evil" it might be a great game in it's own right but as an RE game there is no replay value. The replay value of resident evil comes from access to high power weapons and unlockables, costumes, different path storylines, extra modes like mercenaries/lone survivor etc.
I can't tell you how much time I spent in resident evil 3 slaying nemesis and getting all those bonus weapons, fucking around with gunpowder on different runs, getting better at the dodge/counter system etc. etc. there was so much shit you could do. In 4 and 5 you can just continuously make bank and change your loadouts and upgrade your weapons and the mercenaries mode was top notch probably the best "Kill zombies" mode in any videogame I've ever played because the way the game functioned was around crowd and boss control. You had to constantly pick up items time bonuses, combo bonuses, etc. etc. whilst using the right utilities to clear crowds of zombies in the most efficient manner possible and leaving some alive so you can extend your combo and using melee efficiently and melee counters.
RE7 has nothing on 1-5.

I think it had alot to do with the fact that the game also had insanely good graphics. I remember when the trailers for the game were released and people were saying that it's probably the most photorealistic game ever and not to mention that people really really liked 4 so everyone was just high on the resident evil supply, Fresh brand new consoles, new game, amazing graphics, return of chris redfield with added steroids, wesker. Companies are losing all audiences and they aren't being replenished or replaced. I played whatever one was on the 3DS and dropped it during the tutorial. It felt like it had forced clunkiness like Dark Souls, and I accidentally used up all my sharpening stones instead of hitting the attack button. I didn't bother getting past the cooking shit you get, or whatever it was, because if I was having that much trouble now, I can't think of how awful the rest of the game would be
