I'm planning on playing a game that everyone says is better on controller. What is the most cost effective controller to get for PC? Don't really care about GayStation vs Xbone. I'm fine with either layout.

Also please no meme controllers like pic related.

18fcba No.15268057

Just get a Logitech F310. I played it with GTA 3 and it works okay. Just don't press anything too hard on it.

8287ba No.15268060

Steam controllers are shit. Touchpad is a meme, a shitty meme at that, also the back buttons are annoying and you accidently hit them if you squeeze the grip.

I bought one, regretted it and bought an xbox controller from amazon.

37fc20 No.15268064

A good wired controller like the wired 360 controller. You are not going to find a good dpad on any controller nowadays regardless.

Nope, as I used my F310s for emulating a lot shit when I was in college. Buy a DS2+adapter or a DS3+bluetooth receiver, they're pretty much the best controllers you can get for PC, but you shouldn't pay more than 30 dollars for them unless the controllers are legit and brand new.

Alternatively there's some pretty good 8bitdos for 40-60 dollars; they're bluetooth, usb c, compatible with pc/phone/shitch, have vibration and motion in case you're up for some WAGGLAN or just want to massage your testicles, good battery life, a great dpad (the SF30 Pro has a stiff one and you can't do diagonals as well as you could on previous 8bitdos, but it can be fixed with a little tape, no joke, blame the chinks for adding badly placed joysticks) and they're ergonomic as fuck, which is something most chinese retaliers forget to add to their bootlegs controllers.

You already know the steam controller is a complete meme, so i won't comment on it.

Do not fall for the DS4, Wii U and Switch controller meme, they're lacking a lot of things you'll need for proper emulation.

Wii U and Switch controllers don't have analog triggers, that shit right there kills most racing games because you'll go full speed all the time, they don't have analog buttons either so say goodbye to proper PS2 emulation, both are expensive as well, Switch because bugmen drove up demand for it and Wii U's because scalpers bought them all and they want you to pay 70 shekels for one.

DS4 is frail, has a shit battery life, botnet integrated into the controller (touchpad for your fingerprints AND microphone, wew lad), annoying led lights you can't turn off, badly placed select/start buttons and did away with analog face/shoulder buttons, now it's only the joysticks and triggers, its only saving grace is being plug-and-play with (((steam))) games.

>>15268064

This one is also a good choice if you don't mind spending an hour fixing it.

Get a brand new wired 360 controller on amazon for $20 and order a screwdriver and improved dpad off aliexpress for 5 dollars, then replace them, you now have a decent controller with a good dpad and it cost you less than a DS3+bluetooth receiver and you didn't have to go outside for it, being wired and plug-and-play on PC is a plus, still not as good as a DS3 though.

The touch pad on the right can be used as

>A mouse

>An analog

>A trackball

These are all different input methods that you can switch inbetween. Both the mouse and the Trackball work better than a standard analog, meaning games that require quick aiming or camera control are actually playable without a Mouse and Keyboard for the First time.

The other touchpad is not only a d-pad, but is actually used as a substitute for F1-F9 keys. By hovering over one of the 9 points that can be assigned to it and clicking you have access to an extra 9 keys. And if there's more that you need, you can use one of the other inputs as a switch to change the keybindings to another 9.

>quick saving

>quick loading

>quick switching of weapons

>toggling modes

This is shit you actually need while playing PC games and you can't have it on a controller.

One analog stick is all you need, because analogs are only good for movement. The trackpad can tell how fast your're sliding your fingers, have acceleration or not and essentially rotate you 180 degrees in less than a second while still having complete control over where you're looking.

The left touchpad can be used as a dpad, it's not better than the ps3 controller, but it works just fine.

The Steam controller actually has a shitload of work put into it and the options it gives for customization makes it compatible with every single title you want it to be. And even if you don't want to set it up yourself, the community has probably already made plenty of configurations that already work perfectly.

Plus, it has two extra buttons on the back AND Gyro controls.

It might not play fighting games but it's perfect for everything else if you want to get comfy and not have to worry about compatibility.

At least I actually held one in my hand before going off and saying that it's awful, that's what an adult would do.

The DS4 has extra functionality that is super useful on PC, feels like it was made for it instead of a console. The touchscreen alone for controlling the mouse is amazing when you're using an OS that uses 0% controller input for navigation, unless you're using Steam big screen or something like that.

>The touchpads can be used as anything that aren't what the controller actually needs, that are a second analog stick and an actual-dpad

There is no situation where a second analog stick will be better than a trackpad. The second analog stick barely works for what it's been designed to on current controllers, that's why so many are trying to implement Gyro controls.

>They're worse than mouses and arguably than pads andor trackballs for camera control or coordinate based pointing, but everything else is better with an analog stick.

The point is that sometimes you don't want to use a mouse, the whole point of having a controller is that you want to sit back and use it instead of a mouse and kb.

I have a Steam Controller. It's serviceable, but in no way replaces a regular controller.

It's fine for FPS games and shit that would normally be good for a mouse, but every time I just get frustrated and go "Why wouldn't I just use my mouse right now?"

I played some platformers using it, thinking it would be better, but it really wasn't. Set to joystick mode, where your thumb's movement is similar to a regular joystick, and it just feels.. weird. Like it's too insensitive around the center, but way too sensitive around the edge, so you always end up overshooting or undershooting. You have to learn how to move your thumb properly so your aim gets precise with it, something I never had to do with a regular controller.

I'm pretty sure they're making a second generation coming out soon, but the touchpad idea is kind of shitty. Touchpad technology isn't nearly as precise as a joystick from a PS3 controller from 2006.

The ergonomics was a godsent it's truly the most comfy controller you can hold in your hand even with big hands. AA batteries were a bitch tho so I got a battery pack from amazon basics. It almost doesn't fit in there but with a little force the cap closes and it's cheap, also you don't need the dongle if you have bluetooth on your pc or a cheap dongle. wired always works and has quite low input lag compared to other controllers.

tl;dr for xbone controller

cons:

changing batteries

can be pricey if not on sale

joysticks get dirty after a while

pros:

you can get a rechargeable battery pack and change it after a few years when the batt is dead so longevity is guaranteed

has nice accessories for pc like a keyboard n shit

most ergonomic shape on the market

good button feel only on the latest revision

sturdy af even if thrown against a wall like my m8

Most games that aren't designed with KB+M as their main input method are designed around th fact that analog sticks have a range, they mostly use angles instead of coordinates. You can't get precise angles on a touchpad, and if a game is made with KB+M as it's main input method, chances are it's better to stick to the KB+M, otherwise you'd be crippling your control for the sake of comfort, even with the thumb touchpad.

Wrong, the DS3 has pressure-sensitive face buttons, D-pad, and bumpers. Everything that isn't the start/select/home and L3/R3 are analog inputs. PS2 games like Ace Combat, MGS, DMC, Silent Hill, and GT used these inputs, as did a small number of PS3 games.

With some fucking around you can make use of this on older games (Ace Combat 3 can use the right analog for throttle and yaw, which you can map in the emulator to R1/2 and L1/2 for controls like AC04). It's a very neat feature which was sadly dropped on the DS4.

tbh just wait for a ds4 sale. the black one often goes on sale for $30. i've even seen the red one go for that price. then just connect with a phone charger and download something like xinput because there are no official drivers as far as i know. i've never had an issue. works with cave story. works with all of my emulators, and works with trackmania. i've never had an issue. its comfy. has the best d-pad. the analog sticks allow for more precision than the ds3 and any logitech controller. and in addition to 4 shoulder buttons start/share are easily mapped to start/select, and then you have 2 additional buttons from the touch pad (i havent been able to get swiping to work) which i sometimes use as macros, shortcut keys, or hotkeys.

just try to plug it into a good USB port atleast 2.0 standard USB ports often have latency issues.

also, sometimes you have to adjust a deadzone because the sticks often have a slight jitter at a rested position which can make mapping keys maddening. most of my emulators dont have this issue if you use a good plugin.

023f14 No.15270676

f1ae9a No.15270709

Not nearly as limited as a trackpad you have to move away from the buttons to reach. Lifting off the accelerator, zooming in, and adjusting the map in Ace Combat 4, 5, and 0 can all be done without moving your fingers, and all are analog inputs which will give you a distinct advantage. Nothing near the same functionality can be reached with a trackpad, even if it doesn't move your thumb away from the face buttons

e2034f No.15270711

>>15270676

yea, not many games use the face buttons to accelerate or brake anymore, those are now often appended to R2 L2. i dont really remember a usage outside of that. i cant recall a single platform that used it to make jumps higher which is a shamefully missed opportunity that i wish was around during NES games in my childhood, even though i pretended they were anyway. holding the jump button longer like in cave story is an equally effective option.

pressure sensitive braking with square was nice. but if i would often forget that the button was pressure sensitive and over time the pressure sensitive would cause some presses not to register for me. could have just been the controller getting old though.

f1ae9a No.15270749

>>15270711

Pressure sensitivity tests your muscle memory and your ability to keep your cool. A trigger with an inch of travel makes it very easy to adjust, and therefore more fit for casuals. I can't count how many times I tried to go fast and accidentally shot someone while holding them up in MGS 2, completely ruining my plan. It trained me to be a more cautious, better player

It's also sad how many games use analog triggers for completely digital inputs, like shooting or dodging (bayonetta). There's no need for this, it only further kills the existence of analog inputs.

e2034f No.15270783

>>15270749

but those buttons can easily just be a trigger. there was no need for the shoot button to be square. im not saying it was bad, im just saying that the face buttons being pressure sensitive arent necessary since it wasnt implemented often.

f1ae9a No.15270841

>>15270783

If we're arguing the button layout of the MGS series, there's a lot of smart decisions made about that control scheme which fit the gameplay and don't get in the way. For example, square being shoot isn't as important as releasing square to shoot. But that's not the point of this thread.

Pressure sensitivity was being implemented, and often. I've already listed a bunch of high-profile, successful games which utilized the pressure sensitive buttons in both combat and UI. The push for multiplats in 7th gen prevented many games from actually using the DS3, becoming more trouble than it was worth because "gotta get that 360 money too!"

023f14 No.15270922

I meant that the trackpad is useful for anything you do on the PC that uses a mouse, the analog buttons are only good for about 5 emulated games and maybe some racing games only if you prefer face buttons over triggers.

You have a large number of input methods available at your thumbtips…that would be better done by simply switching to your keyboard. If you are playing a game where it is better for you to have these immediately available, you might benefit more from simply playing the game on a keyboard. If you need a stick on your thumb, there is also pic related - it is deeply autistic and expensive, but I would argue that it may be worth it if this is something that you are demanding…It is likely more cost effective in the long term than a steam controller with long term use, for reasons I will elaborate on next post…

A good wireless mouse is superior to wired mice because sometimes the wire makes the mouse have inconsistent resistance while you're moving it in different directions. Even trying something like taping the wire to the monitor or using a mouse bungee doesn't really help because the wire is usually so stiff that there's still resistance in at least one direction when you move it. I shall be more in depth about my hatred of the steam controller.

First; my hands are giant. The steam controller is a bit large for my hands. It is about as large as the original xbox controller - it is unironically "xbox huge".

Second: The trackpads are trash, considering their natural purposes. The right trackpad naturally replaces a stick - a task which it performs almost on par with the stick with, hindered mainly by its giant size…were it smaller, I would argue it was superior, but the size is just too large. You have to move far more across the trackpad than you *should*. The left trackpad naturally replaces a d-pad. Holy shit, it is abysmal at this task.

Third: There are better controllers for every genre of game that I can name, and most gamers focus on one genre of game. The keyboard and mouse is superior for fps, rts, and shmups. There are fighting sticks for fighting games. The ps3 controller is superior for twin stick shooters (although the steam controller comes close, the right trackpad is just too large). I do not have great deals of experience for other genres, but I have not heard of the steam controller being the dominant choice of controller in any genre that I am aware of. There seems to always be "a better option".

Last: The build quality is abysmal. The bumpers snap after sufficient amounts of use, and this is a common problem. Having opened up my steam controller after it broke, I will attest that this is due to a baffling engineering flaw - the pressing of the bumpers deforms a hard piece of plastic, which is used to press the switch.

The steam controller will not take any sort of regular use. At $45, I would expect one to go through 3 steam controllers long before they went through one orbweaver. The orbweaver is $110. The orbweaver is an autistic meme, but my impression from people who have one is that it is vastly superior to the steam controller in build quality.

What's wrong with the bumpers? Do they wear out a lot, or is it just the feel of them? (I must acknowledge that they do feel a little weird at first, but I like it.)

You can either use a cheap $5 USB numpad or get one of these for $25. Paying over $100 for that Razer thing is ridiculous for several reasons.

The reason I brought the orbweaver up was because I was pointing out its superiority to the steam controller.

I am not suggesting anyone actually buy one of those damnable things, I am simply pointing out that it is superior as a gaming device than the piece of shit that is the steam controller.

>You have to move far more across the trackpad than you *should*.

Have you actually looked at the settings? No matter where you place your finger and move the trackpad is going to register that as a movement in that direction, you don't need to cross the whole thing.

Build quality seems excellent to me, the controller has weight and seems solid. I've had it for more than a year now and I use it daily and I haven't had any problems whatsoever, even if I did buy it used.

Controllers breaking is always a subjective issue, I don't know what you did with yours to actually make it break. Point is, build quality of the unit doesn't feel cheap.

Again, suggesting the orbweaver doesn't change the fact that if someone is trying to use a controller, it's because they don't want a mouse-like piece of hardware. That could be either because of comfort or because they wouldn't be able to use it outside of a plain desk.

If you put up with Analog aiming in 3rd person shooters for this long then SURELY you can put up with using the trackpad as a dpad, which is really the only objectively valid criticism that you can make at the controller.

And fuck if the trackpad is so bad then use the analog.

Could one cannibalize a numpad to make themselves an arcade stick?

i wish you could buy like a small gamepad with some buttons and still use a mouse for aiming.

Nothing worth note ever used the ps2 analog face buttons short of one part of star ocean and metal gear. You also forgot to mention that every sony dpad is mushy garbage, I'd have to use the stick when playing gba/snes games… or switch out to my 14yr logitech ds clone.

I've never had a steam controller, or used my computer to play games on the couch, but like, I can see the potential uses of one. My biggest gripe with it is how pointless having two touch pads, is. The touch pad is meant to emulate a mouse, and while that's good for like, I dunno, playing some turn based game like Civ, on your couch, or really slower paced first person game, having two of them is retarded. The argument that it's so it's ambidextrous seems odd, to me, too. On average the right thumb is more precise than the left thumb, but nobody's had a problem using their left one primarily for movement. That and they could just make left handed ones, probably.

Regardless, I can see how it'd be alright for point and clicks, or other slower games that use a mouse, on the couch, but at that point it feels like you should just get a couch lap desk, thing, and some USB extension cables, if you really want to seriously play something on your PC, on the couch.

If you're spending that much on a controller get a new DS4. The dpad is way better. The sticks feel better. The start and select buttons are in better places. Its bigger. Seriously the DS3 and DS2 are some of my least favorite controllers because of how spongy the dpad feels compared to the DS4.

Don't forget that all monitors have cameras hidden behind the screen and the government watches you at all times. I don't know how you could have left that out of your post when you could have easily fit it into one of your 30 reddit spaces.

A touchpad is a fucking genius addition, anon. The biggest problem is that the touchpad the DS4 uses is really shitty so it can't be used for casual browsing and that there's no fucking support for it in games. I dream of a day where I can play BMS and Flight Simulator X where I can just use the touchpad to click on the cockpit controls rather than mapping my keyboard or using the mouse.

I wish developers would just mapped driving to the mouse rather than to the keyboard. Then there wouldn't have to be ridiculous work-arounds like this.
