Every server I've played allows skins. It's all about if the server has sv_pure set to 0, which most do. Otherwise the client will enforce the "pure" skins.

Well d2 in csgo changed for a while. Some things were removed and some things were added. Even though they seem minor changes, it can be considered as removal of old strategies and adding of new ones to trained eyes.

Only got into CS since GO like a year after its release. Ive been playing it alot. I like the addition of Wingman though, as the 'remasters' of the old maps. I like the direction the game is going tbh, except for the new gun sounds.

Man, the WC3 mods in 1.6 were pretty good but my absolute favourite was the Superhero mod, which also worked in Condition Zero (for yourself) so I would just spawn in an entirely team of bots and fly around the map like Spider Man taking them out. There weren't that many servers around when I found out about it, but there were shit loads of people making their own "custom" hero abilities that were super easy to add to your own server. Literally just add a line of code into the config.

The server I joined had entirely custom maps too, a lot of them huge.

Just to expand a little bit more, but the amount of maps in 1.6 were crazy. Fucking Lord of the Rings maps, where Terrorists try to bomb Isengard while riding drivable Ent's while CT's try to hold them back.

Or the VIP map where the CT's are running away from the Terrorists inside Moria. Poolday, various versions of assault that worked better than anything Valve came up with.

I think mods were just for the most part better on Gold Source. Maybe the lower graphical fidelity let almost anyone make a decent looking map. One thing that drove me crazy in CS:S were the maps that had dev textures. Day of Defeat had some awesome user created maps and so did TF:C. There were some absolute trash maps sure, but nothing as memorable has turned up for me in CS:S or GO.

CSGO is objectively the best for 5v5 matches. CS 1.6 still has the most fun core mechanics and they work perfectly for random pubs where getting into the action as fast as possible is the most important thing, but they simply don't provide enough in therms of viable strategies, grenade usage, economy/weapon choices to make the game as deep as GO from a purely tactical standpoint. Mods were fun but most of them were shit and even with proper support there wouldn't be the same demand for custom content in current year. Skins are shit in CSGO but the same can be said about custom server content in 1.6, from quake announcers to alternate models and skins, it was always terrible.

1.6 and especially have CSS had communities that were aware the base game didn't have much staying power. The communities wanted to make their own ways to have fun with CS so you got a lot of great game mods like WC3, Xmen, Surf, gungame, zombie, zombie escape, and so on. These game modes although amateurish in their design and implementation provided hours of fun in a game that is otherwise at best a competitive throwaway. GOs embarrassingly simple arms race and poor community support but strongly encouraged match making has devolved the CS experience into the poorly aged and very, very tired base game of demolition and rarely hostage rescue. Neither of which are entertaining for more than 2 rounds. I can play 4 hours of zombie on the same map, have it be different every single time and experience a wide range of emotions, joy, excitement, panic, smugness and have it all be worthwhile. In Gungame I an experience humiliation, humiliate others, triumph and be rewarded for my mastery of the maps and the mechanics introduced such as turbo, sticky grenades and throwing knives.

GO is just shit in every way. Base CS sucks.

It's amazing how Source ended up. In 1.6 you can play on a server from another continent and it won't feel very smooth but it will at least be predictable, your worse ping will be a detriment compared to locals but you know what you're getting into when you joined. You'll probably play worse. This shit was meant to play well on 56K modems and passably on 28K modems between players in the same region. DSL, Cable, etc. only improved things and provided an online experience that scaled to be smooth, 10 years ago with 2Mb down you'd have a solid CS 1.6 experience with very little perceptible network issues.

CSS kinda fucked with things but community servers largely addressed this, allowing for a solid experience even despite the generous hit boxes and awkwardness in source's new netcode. GO abandoning the community servers utterly crippled things. 10 years ago I had 128 tick CSS servers with 32 players and the experience was smooth as butter. Today we have 64 tick servers standard across the board where some jackass BR with 258 ping will have a natural advantage due to the engines generous lag compensation to the detriment of everyone with a 30-60 ping. These days you don't know what the fuck you're getting when you join a match.
