X3TC does a good job of allowing you to set up a space merchant empire. It's the only game in the X series I've played, so I can't speak of any of the others do it better or worse.

You can always jump drive your super freighter out of combat. If you're talking about your AI trading vessels getting attacked that's what guards are for.

You can also befriend the pirates so that the only threat to your investments is the occasional xeno.

Seconding the Annos. Even the 2070 campaign is perfectly playable because the always online item storage only counts in sandbox and multiplayer anyway, so you can just pirate.

That's true. I usually set patrols in high traffic sectors so they can distract hostiles, if no patrols you just have to hope the trader jumps fast enough before getting noscoped.

The Endless series feature economic victory conditions and economic focused factions. More specifically, Endless Legend introduced the market place along with a faction that takes cuts from transactions held, and Endless Space 2 expanded the market mechanic further through corporations and luxury item based improvements, there's also an inflation mechanic to sort of curb the insane amount of purchasing you could do in Endless Legend.

I played it myself and the most of that I've noticed is the scientist faction (and maybe the scavenger one too), but aside from being black I didn't feel like it was trying to peddle me some tumblr shit since both single and multiplayer are all about the gameplay.

They're incredibly broken games. The Guild 2: Renaissance with fan patches is the most playable of them all.

Use Litcubes Universe, it drastically improves gameplay and makes actual space battles feasable, with quick equip of ship trhough templates, rapid resond teams and 2 actual enemy factions.

A small disadvantage that comes with performance optimisation for huge space battles is the rebalance of weapons.

Slower firerate, slower recharge, higher damage, makes battles run easy, but small scale skirmishes are less flashy.
