Katawa Shoujo is a very disappointing thing to me. Supposed nostalgia and quality attributed to it is mainly given by redditors and fags who have barely played other VN's but I too fell for it at one time.

Let's start with some of the good, the bad, and how we could try and fix it:

The good:

>Loads of content

>Great designs

>Great art

>Girls are cute

>Amazing soundtrack

>Fantastic setting

>A decent sized cast

>Interesting side characters

>Manly picnic

The bad:

<Contrived, often forced plotlines

<Nonsensical characterization

<Nonsensical motives

<Barely any player choice

<Random drama for the sake of drama

<Characters that deserve development don't get it making their purpose and place questionable

<Edge-tier monologues in some of the routes

And, as a personal opinion, several of the girls reeked of modern redditor-tier crap. Emi in particular was a literal whore who, as the dev confirms, still leaves Hisao in the good ending of her route.

All of this seems pretty bad, right? But I'm not done. The worst parts of the game by far are yet to be mentioned:

The developers and Hisao.

I'll start with Hisao here as what I know of Four Leaf is partly based on conjecture as well as hearsay.

Hisao is a fucking terrible protagonist. He has no goals, no charm, no convictions, no convictions, and no personality. Further in almost none of the routes does he progress past this infantile stage of character development.

His personality is void and bland, he doesn't even have the decency to be a badly written western "otaku" character! He literally does not like anything nor does he have any knowledge on a single subject.

Adding onto this, his motivations are ridiculous. His only goal in the game is the girls, nothing beyond that even enters his mind. On the few occasions in which he does actually hold some will of his own it's mainly because he feels following said path will get him action with a member of the cast.

The worst part about this is that in the rare case one of the writers tried to give him conviction or a desire they totally fuck it up and make him massively over react to a given situation. No more poignant is this than in Rin's route, to the point I have brought quotes from the game to bolster my argument.

RIN: "I didn't want to・"

NARRATOR: "This time it's Rin who interrupts herself in midsentence."

HISAO: "Can't what? You never explain! How am I supposed to understand anything if you never say anything? Why don't you ever talk? Say something!"

Reminder he yells this so loud people outside his room check in. To a girl with aspergers・a disease most infamous for making people adverse to sound. He does things like this multiple times through out the route and even in a few other ones. He's vile and hate filled for most of the game and adds nothing of value to the lives of people around himself.

Hisao feels like the worst numale cuck possible. He can't hold down a relationship for five minutes without being lead around like a braindead sheep.

Now, onto the last bit of my hatred before some suggestions as to how it could be salvaged:

Four leaf themselves are not what they seem. No, rather than the stoic group of halfchan using, anime loving, time devoting, talented individuals we imagine they are rather a group of cliquey bastards who frequently pushed out all creativity in their group in favour of yes-men and literal tumblr/twitterfags.

This is a problem that extends far beyond the scope of the game, it extends to current behaviour. Multiple members of the dev team are not only now cucked out redditors but are actively against the culture that bolstered their success.

These supposed lovers of Japanese and Doujin culture, they themselves having based their project on the bonus panel of a hentai doujin, love it so much that they actively veto and destroy any fan project that dares to mess with their masterpiece.

This has gotten so bad that three years ago one of the games writers attempted to create a route for Miki, the one armed tomboy chick, and implement it into the game but was refused and denied until they were finally forced to release the transcript rather than add it into the game as an update.

Stories of the games development are a waking nightmare. They spent over eight years of their lives on what amounts to a medium length visual novel. Multiple members of the team were claimed to be completely useless including an artist that had such trouble keeping on-style they were forced to redo their art every single time they drew something.

Following this a cliquey atmosphere supposedly formed among certain members which lead to tons of cool shit and actual plot and character development (imagine!) being cut.

The most infamous of this is Shizune's route originally ending in the suicide of Miisha. This was forcibly removed from the game by other members who bullied the artist into changing the script at the last moment into the boring crap we got.

The entire game was nearly completed multiple times and totally scrapped at the will of the idiots on top.

Four leaf studios doesn't even one leaf, it's almost all reddit by now.

Now, how do I think it can be fixed?

Since the source code is easily enough obtainable I have several ways I believe this game can be fixed to suggest to you all. As I myself am currently embroiled in several projects I cannot engage in this but someday I desire to fix at the very least Rin's route as my heart yearns for her soft, armless touch.

Plain and simply? Remove a lot of the degeneracy from girls like Emi and such. That or give them the development they need to grow past it.

A lot of the drama feels forced at the best of times, usually because of Hisao's ineptitude. Just fucking make real stories for the characters.

Just unfuck shit as it was meant to be. Make Hanako a little crazy as she was always supposed to.

It really all comes down to this. Plain and simply? ==KEEP TO 4LEAF'S NAMESAKE AND MAKE HISAO A FUCKING 2CHANNER ANON==.

2chan is huge in Japan. It's as simple as giving him the generic anon demeaner of one who browses, acquires useless knowledge and skills, and generally keeps his opinions and thoughts slightly far from the norm. Give him a personality this way, give him things he likes and dislikes, give him a reason to go on with his life instead of just drifting from 2DPD to 2DPD.

Giving him the personality of a witless anon also makes his role of one who can meet with many girls make sense. The interests of each girl (Art, chess, tea, fitness, etc) are all deeply rooted in anon culture and him being part of imageboards would allow him enough passing knowledge to become interested and grow with each girl

On top of this? Make him less retarded. Give the guy some idea of how other human fuckin' beings act and how to treat a woman instead of constant spazzing.

It is a valid argument, because there's nothing to discuss that hasn't been discussed to death for the last several years. It's a VN, meaning there's no finding new ways to play it. You read things and make some choices. Compare to Mario 64, which has people trying to beat it while pressing A as little as possible.

There's very little depth to the writing or story. There's no discussion of different story interpretations to be had. There's very little to be found by digging deeper into the details. There's no discovering new intricacies to the characters. It isn't a story that you can have deep, thoughtful discussion over.

Nothing new has come out of the game. There's no spin-offs, no sequel, no side-material. There's no giant fan-art community, there's almost no fangames, no one's modding it, there's very little original content being made by fans.

KS is as stagnant as a subject can get. Cuckchan's /vg/'s general probably exhausted all potential new discussion before they even reached 100 of their thousands of threads. All the VN has is a community of circle-jerkers, largely based in cuckchan. There is absolutely no reason to make a thread on the topic, especially any attempts at a repeating general. You'd get more interesting discussion about an empty void.

No matter what you think of the quality of the games, you can't argue that there isn't constantly new things coming out to talk about, with the franchise. You've got the official games, fan games, fan art, music remixes, doujins, you name it. And, even though the game stories don't have much depth to them, the fantastical characters and setting allow fans to unleash their imaginations and have theoretical discussions, which is helped by new characters and stories being occasionally introduced. KS has none of that. It's a static topic.

Game news discussion is as shallow as intelligent discussion can get, it's a filler between the moments where the timeless elements can be discussed over. If touhou is your standard, then I pitty you, because touhou threads were always (as in most of the time, throughout the imageboards lifetime) the worst threads that were acceptable. If it's not, then you've made a really unfortunate example, where the relevancy, again, is incidental and is based on the baggage that the "original" characters (i.e. quality source material) bring to the table.

I think the most you can ask of a KS thread is nostalgia. Once a while, remember something you enjoyed in the past.

I remember KS as a case of genuinely decent amateur writing. I remember the charming nature of its origin. I remember it as a story of a boy getting over depression and learning that everyone has damage, whether they wear it on their skin or not. I remember the characters, the OST and some charming patterns in it. None of it was groundbreaking, none of it needed to be. We can enjoy simple stories, after all.
