>Also you admit the hate bandwagon is because casuals use it and that's it.
Hating something for the people it brings is perfectly valid.
>BTW can you explain me "Stalker complete" thing?
Same basic deal. Mod advertises itself as an improvement but alters both gameplay and tone, gets media attention, bringing in a flood of new players who played the mod before the base game and imposed their skewed view of what the game is on the existing community.
Much like you get people trying to run other gameplay mods on top of Brutal Doom, you would get people trying to run other mods on top of Complete.

So you hate the group it brings rather than the product itself. Your hipster opinion is invaild then, unless pic related happens, which is understandable. I lost lots of hobbies and internet stuff like that.
About the Stalker Complete, why would they change the gameplay anyway? in HD or Remake stuff, they just improve graphics, fix bugs, tweak some problems and sometimes add small extra stuff. Aren't "HD version" stuff acceptable?

I think what bothers me the most is that every single one seems to feel like it needs a gun that either can be recharged or has unlimited ammo. Then since that's taking the niche of your melee weapon from the originals, they just make the melee weapon more or less an instakill. Maybe Duke didn't do that, I don't know. Didn't pay much attention either way to Duke, but I've heard a lot about nuDoom, I got Shadow Warrior for free, and I pirated nuWolf.

Making melee really powerful wouldn't even be a problem if it weren't for the fact they seem to always make you invincible now because everything is designed in sequence with no real thought towards the game as a whole. I imagine it went something like this:
>wow, the fist sucks
>let's make it kill everything in one hit
>that isn't satisfying, put in some long winded death animation
>sir, playtesters are complaining about dying during your kill animations

Original had pretty strong melee, and ranged weapons were powerful but went through the ammunition in a second. Remake has melee weapon that you have no reason not to use 99% of the time, and ranged weapons just all suck and you never use them except maybe to shoot those small flying bastards with dual SMGs. I really liked how they did the gun/sword balance in Final Doomer JPCP set - sword is fucking strong, but ranged weapons complement it perfectly.

>M1
You start off in a dark room with three shotgunneers and only your new plasma pistol, because starting a level before you're able to get your bearings in a situation you're very likely to take inevitable damage on your first playthrough is so much fun. The first room is locked by some kind of broken circuitry where you need to pick up some power core to progress (something the wad wants to make sure you know), though the ad hoc start combined with giant fuck-off DEEPEST LORE backstory alerts popping up on your HUD make it so that you're very likely miss the fact that you even picked up any kind of core amidst the fighting. I sure did. I just mashed E to see what was interactable.
You get a bunch of new weapons, like a nail shotgun which acts as a super-version of the shotgun with penetrative capability and a crossbow which acts like a charged-up rocket launcher, and these strike me as rather redundant. They all have their own separate ammo pools, and are essentially "X vanilla weapon but stronger". Some have additional capabilities like penetration, but those aren't that major to make you want to select it. They seem redundant to me because if you want something stronger in vanilla, you pick another weapon like the plasma rifle or rocket launcher or shotty. Not just the 'stronger shotgun'. It'd be another thing if the stronger variants shared their ammo pools with the vanilla weapons so there's a trade-off to using them, but as it stands I don't know why I can't get more plasma rifle ammo instead of some nails for my nail shotgun. The new weapons ruin the old trade-off of using rare plasma ammo or dangerous-to-use rocket launcher ammo against tankier enemies with simply beefed up weapons with their own rather commonly placed ammo types. You'd be better off just replacing the vanilla weapons with the new ones.
Also the colors. Jesus Christ. It's like taking acid in the North Pole. Dimly lit rooms everywhere contrasted with a large variety of bright vivid colors can't be considered as anything but taxing on the eyes. Some rooms have way too many colors present at once that you just start losing track of any geometrical detail. It's basic color theory that you want to keep some consistent primary colors in your palette applied throughout the whole level. Here one room is hued in yellow, the other in blue, the other in blue in red, the other has hues inbetween, it all becomes too much.
This becomes more confusing when you're trying to discern whether red/yellow/blue is being used for decorative purposes or for signposting colored doors/other waypoints. I'd try to use the blue broken power circuit to fix it because I had the blue key, until I learned that was meaningless and power circuits just require any kind of power core to get fixed. Often red/blue/yellow are used in contrast with the rest of the level to signify color keycards/gates, this contrast is lost when you give too many rooms hues in the same color. Even geometrically there are often too many details at once which makes it hard to understand what is supposed to catch your eye. Take the E1M1 starting room in the new map. Cracks in the ceiling, bright-ass outside open space, red door, blue door, calm down already. Although this level is confusing, it's linear enough that you won't get lost at least. It helps that it's a twisted reimagining of E1M1 so you can kind of figure out where to go.
The darkness in turn impedes trying to discern enemies like the zombiemen who blend in too much. It almost seemed like the author is going for an Overload-esque "enemy eyes glow in the dark" kind of aesthetic, but for some reason only Pinkies have glow-in-the-dark eyes and zombiemen eyes only glow when they fire.
There's a new flashlight, but it's the Doom 3 kind of flashlight which you can't use alongside your weapons, making it kind of pointless in a game not 100% dark and not horror. However, it's main use is to detect secrets behind slightly transparent walls, featuring hidden switches which need to be punched with your fists instead of being simply interactable. I don't see the point of this at all. All it means that if you want to detect certain secrets in the first place is that you have to pull out your flashlight to shine at everything and then switch to your fists to punch shit. It's so pointlessly cumbersome, I don't understand why you'd want to go from just mashing E at walls to this.
3b86ca No.15323749
>>15323748
Encounter-wise there's not a whole lot of going on. It's the first level so it's fairly easy, but unlike the original E1M1 it features too much padding in the shape of tankier enemies such as Arachnotrons, Revenants and Hell Knights in places where you fight them one at a time in very open spaces where you can avoid their projectiles easily while constantly putting shotgun shells in them without any effort. That's not interesting encounter design, that's padding. For filler-type encounters you want to use weaker enemies, not tanky ones like Hell Knights. On the other hand you have this Revenant which spawns behind you when you pick up the power core in the E1M1 end room, which is somewhat tricky because the space you can move in to avoid the single Revenant's attacks is much more constrained, so you actually have to think how to dance around the Revenant even when he's by himself.
This map is lame. Visually it's a giant mess of colors and hard to distinguish rooms. That most of the encounters are on the easy side is excusable by the fact that it is the first map in a level pack, but for padding there is no excuse. The only positive point is that this map is very small, else the confusing lighting and coloring would have made it a pain of another level.
>M2
You start in a moving train filled with five easily-killed enemies. The good news is that the color usage is more bearable this time around. It's more on par with Doom 64 with its dimly colored hallways and slight contrast between darker colors. It's still awful and incredibly overbearing, but at least it doesn't make me think I need a new pair of glasses.
The starting hallway looks way too empty for its size, nor does it have enough enemies in it to justify the size. There's lava pouring from the ceiling in the middle of the hallway, but it disappointingly doesn't play into encounter design at all and is mostly there for decorative purposes. The lack of texturing detail and very low ceiling give it the impression that it belongs in Wolfenstein 3D.
It's not just this hallway, but almost the whole level which looks too empty. I almost feel the abrasive usage of colors is done just to mask the lack of detail most oversized connecting rooms have. Whereas the previous map was overdetailed, this one is just feels larger than necessary. There is a tower in the middle of a lava pool which you need to get to, and there's only one door connecting to the room leading to the tower. The tower has multiple entrances and can be circled around, but there's no real point to circling around or using anything but the front entrance. There's only like two of those lava monsters to your left and right when you enter the room with the tower anyways. You could just block off the paths leading around the tower and not miss anything. There's no point to increasing level space without using any of it. People accustomed to exploring levels for secrets (e.g. most people who play Doom) will feel sorely disappointed when they find out that there's no point to exploring every nook and cranny.
The worst part of this level is the pacing. First you have to find this power core, and then backtrack past enemies you already killed to a broken power circuit so you can unlock access to the tower. In the tower there are three teleporters leading to a colored key each, each containing its own challenge room. Then you have to backtrack to take that key to a hub of three colored doors, where you need to clear out a small room of enemies to get a power core. Then you need to backtrack to the green room which you only need to clear out once, and insert the power core in one of three broken circuits. Then you need to backtrack all the way back to the tower so you can do the same for the other two keys.
Nothing is being done to refresh the backtracking. I don't understand how this was a good idea conceptually given the amount of inevitable backtracking involved. I play Doom to kill demons, not to waste my time running from point A to point B while doing nothing at all. The destination rooms are slightly different and thankfully not redundantly symmetric, but that doesn't take away from the stupefying amount of dead air.
3b86ca No.15323750
>>15323749
You can tackle the colored rooms in any order, but this non-linear type of progression works better when you don't have the road to each key obviously signposted in a hub, and evenmore so when there's not a tedious amount of busywork involved after getting each key. None of the colored rooms are even balanced out challenge-wise. Blue is obviously the hardest, yellow lies inbetween, and red is piss easy. Giving the player the option to choose between these options without the foresight to know what he's up against in each room only makes the end of the level feel anticlimactic when you end up taking the easiest challenge room as the last one. It could work if you only had a set amount of ammo to work with and that none of the challenge rooms had any ammo in them, so even though you end up picking the easiest room at the end you'll have next to no ammo. Though the more sensible thing is to make them all equally difficult.
The red room is a complete crapshoot where you can fight one of three mancubi at a time. Whip out your plasma rifle and they're pretty much stunlocked to death. The yellow room is slightly more challenging, at least the start is where you're stuck in a small inlet with Lost Souls and Imps and Pinkies in front of you, but the nail shotgun makes it a doozy. The blue room is more of a proper challenge with a mix of Revenants and Mancubi coming at you from different angles, though you have four waves and most of them just repeat the same encounters by bringing up the same enemies again after you press each button, which leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
Challenge rooms aside, the end of the level is another anticlimax. It's just one Baron of Hell, which at this point in the level isn't a major issue to deal with. Actually, if you head to the exit before repairing any circuits you can actually safely take potshots at the Baron because the ice walls will block all his projectiles from hitting you while you can safely hit him. So the end of this level feels like one wet fart.
This level isn't as visually abhorrent as the previous one, but it still isn't any good either. It tries to go for the Doom 64 look but doesn't quite have the atmosphere to carry it, on top of using too many colors at inappropriate times. It's also bigger than necessary, which only worsens the amount of required backtracking you have to do. The pacing in this level is absolute drek and most encounters feel completely disjointed. Ammo doesn't feel like a problem at all. The climax of the level is one big joke. Only the blue room encounters are any good. Honestly, this map sucks.
>Secret Level
You have only 1HP, but your fists instantly kill anything. And you start off without any guns. That's real fun, now go punch these Pinkies in dark mazes. It's another one of these levels which relishes in making the player feel lost. Its layout is a complete maze of redundant passages and confusing signposting. To the combat there is no real crescendo. Punching Pinkies is no problem at all, but trying to punch Lost Souls in a situation where they can insta-kill you is. For some reason, Lost Souls only rarely ever appear in this map even though they are the most interesting enemy to fight with just your fists. Even the projectile-throwing enemies aren't as much of a problem because your fists insta-kill them.
Visually the map almost nails this ethereal dream cave feeling, but the colors make the geometry a bit too hard to read. At least there is one color used primarily used throughout instead of a fuckload. I just don't think this map has been properly tested.
There's this sector with a bunch of overlapping transparent cyan pillars or whatever which completely tanks the framerate when you look at it, which is kind of embarrassing. I doubt that that's done for intentional effect.
Also, I couldn't figure out how to progress at all. I found no way to get to the blue key, and by extent the red key as well. After some minutes of searching and humping around I threw in the towel and just slapped on IDDQD and noclip. There's a colored gate which leads to the next part of the level, but it's in a secret for some fucking reason and it requires all three keys. After that door there's an NPC you can talk to, and some pedestals to put your keys on, which apparently do fuck-all.
There's a whole heap of Cacodemons around, though apparently you're supposed to follow the blinking lights in a cave which leads to a Megasphere, but picking up the Megasphere locks you in place while you get wailed on. I turned off IDDQD to let myself die, but I just died instead of moving on, probably because there are no further levels.

This level was an annoyance, it wasn't particularly pretty to look at, and even the secret level concept of having instakill fists but little health is poorly realized. Navigation is just awful and confusing, what with a yellow altar which changes your perspective to show that the gates around the red key have change, but it happens so fast that you're unable to tell what actually just happened. Just not a very fun level.
At this point I'd just scrap the levels and thoroughly study Doom 64 in terms of how to use colored lighting on everything without looking like visual diarrhea before starting out again in this "style", though not before studying other WADs in terms of how to craft combat encounters worth a damn which don't feel like padding and how to naturally connect them together into a cohesive map. The usage of colors is akin to that of the abhorrent color schemes often used for fursonas: distracting and confusing. This WAD is like someone trying to draw in his own special style without even understanding the fundamentals of anatomy. First you should be able to make something good instead of something pretty. The priorities here are all screwed up.

Doubtful. Notice how in the Doom 64 screenshot objects like the button and barrel stand out through minor easily perceived contrasts in color which don't massively clash with other colors in the screen while preserving its own darker tone. The hues of other rooms have a consistent color palette of darker colors which is more pleasing and less straining to the eye than suddenly introducing really bright greens, reds, yellows and blues in a room with a predominantly low orange/green like often seen in M2 which gives the map a cluttered impression. Doom 64 only sparingly uses bright colors, which is why the muted color palette lends so well to its more atmospheric tone.

>… Doom 64 didn't have dynamic lights though. That's retribution
I never mentioned dynamic lights.
>, the room is yellow for… what reason? There's no source for it or rhyme or reason. Not even one sector over there's an abrupt change to an orange lit sector, despite the lights being more of a white.
In that screenshot there is no reason, but then it's not particularly necessary as long as it doesn't happen too often to the point of becoming noticeable. Aesthetically it looks just fine like a pseudo-Quake map. Meanwhile I have no idea what aesthetics your maps are even going for, and the garishness of your color usage often take away from texture and geometric detail because the human brain is more accustomed to discerning colors first. That crack in the green-lit floor is barely noticeable because you're most likely to be first occupied by the color differences than the geometrical detail. The glass window pane which lets you look at the lava bridge barely stands out at all. Using colored lighting almost everywhere, and brighter colors one at that, is a bit straining on the eyes.
In the fourth screenshot >>15332429 the color transition between the orange-lit floor and green-lit floor is also incredibly binary and unnatural. Particularly pic related looks egregious. It doesn't hurt to just use some regular white lights with a regular readable color palette.
>>15332514
Yes, exactly. One things Romero said is to use contrast in brightness to make different rooms easier to distinguish, not difference in the color fog.
3b86ca No.15332611
>>15332575
This way it looks better. The orange light near the end of the hallway should act as a decent enough signpost. For the first screenshot I'd only add a small ramp to the entrance to the left room. The abrupt change rise in floor height kind of clashes with the wall right next to it.
I never got the impression that these were techbase maps or any kind of base maps of sorts, they seemed to be too abstract in style and purpose.

" hurr durr the shotgun was used way too much in DOOM 1 so lets make an even better shotgun that renders all other weapons pointless durrrrr" D2 might as well have had a 2 weapon limit and nobody would have noticed. I'm very confused as to why this last version of Oblige works like this, the two maps I've made have been nothing but Lost Souls, Imps and zombies (grunts and sergeants, no chaingunners); while I've got maps sitting around from 7.50 that have a Hell Knight in the next room

After fooling around with Oblige's settings for a while, I've finally made a map that suits my taste for difficulty. Play on UV. More fun with Babel. There's a fair bit of "where the fuck do I go" but as long as you don't accidentally pass right by the yellow key like I did it works out fine. Be warned though, this map is pretty light on ammo in parts, so using infighting is probably a good idea.

As opposed to bulletsponges? At least cannon fodder can be dealt with quickly. One bulletsponge-type enemy without supporting enemies or tricky geometry supporting it is a tedious exercise of circlestrafing and repeatedly shooting your shotgun because the threat isn't that immediate that you'd want to waste ammo for the stronger weapons.
>the weapons aren't just "stronger versions"
I noticed that they have additional capabilities like penetration, faster RoF, or freezing on impact, though that just more ties into the weapons being more stronger in general.

>I don't WANT them to be dealt with quickly. Even on UV they pose no threat; which is not what I want. Take the first hell-knight plus two pinkies. This seemed better than four pinkies and two cacos, as those were just tedious instead of fun and challenging, and the imps just go down way too quickly to a single shotgun blast, much like many of the other cannonfodder.
So then you place a group of cannonfodder enemies, or a bulletsponge enemy alongside some cannonfodder. One medium-sized bulletsponge enemy is hitstunned too easily (holding LMB over an Arachnotron with the shotgun equipped pretty much ensures he'll never attack if you get a lucky streak with the pain chances), that's why you often place groups of enemies so you can't easily stunlock a bigger enemy to death with no fuss, or alternatively change the layout of the level so you're put in a tricky situation where you can't avoid incoming projectiles as easily.
>How is this a problem? This has been a staple of the gameplay for nearly twenty five years
The staple of Doom is crowd control, target prioritization, and tactical weapon selection. Being able to circlestrafe through an encounter at all is usually a sign of shit level design because you don't have to think about how you move at all. That's why hitscan enemies exist to force you to use cover. That's why levels are often constrained and prevent you from circlestrafing at all. If there's nothing to a Cyberdemon fight than circlestrafing and holding down LMB to fire your rocket launcher, then it's shit. That's why you introduce multiple enemies of different types to spice things up, to make you think and reassess the situation.
Most enemies in Doom aren't that interesting to fight on their own in a flat space. Only the Mancubus really is because of his random fireball firing angles, and is more suited than any other enemy type to appear alone in an encounter.

In example you could give 8 more shells or just extra energy cell and teleport imps into the tubes similar to the one player starts in as soon as the door opens. Bam, encounter spiced up and now it has some chance of at least damaging player.

Is there a mod that makes the game a bit more tactical and slower paced? I know there exist Hideous Destructor which fits this criteria but it does the realism part way too much for my taste which makes this mod limited to maps with few monsters, it would be nigh impossible trying to finish maps which has like 100-200 monster. the closest mod I have found that is less extreme is Armed Recruit and Real Guns Hardcore but they are showing their age already, I don't mind it but I thought a few newer mods would exist. It's a shame that nobody works on the Delta Force mod anymore as it looks very interesting.

Rainbow 6 Doom/Special Weapons is really good, although it's still somewhat reliant on smaller maps. It's got a realistic arsenal and forces you to move tactically or die, without trying to overload you with mechanics and shit down your throat like Hideous Destructor. Plus you still have doomguy's carry capacity, so you're always strapped up like Arnold in the last scene of Commando, and it feels great.

I am on this mod a few minutes in and its pretty much what I needed, thanks for the recommendation m8. The only thing that "disturbs" me is the lack of weapon sprites and that the sprinting is awfully slow for my taste but besides that it at least makes it up with a lot of weapons and simple mechanics. How compatible is it with custom monsters?

Just tested it, it's certainly compatible with custom monsters but you might end up SOL when it comes to weapon and ammo drops. The lack of weapon models (and presumably the slow sprinting) is because there's no weapon models in the original Rainbow Six games.

What a shame, since he hardly added any custom monsters + he did monster related balances too.
> The lack of weapon models is because there's no weapon models in the original Rainbow Six games.
He should just make a model rip out of Stalker weapon mods which there is plenty of it :^). Also I fixed the slow sprinting "bug" by just enabling the always run mode, my fault since I just setup my self Rocket Launcher (frontend) program and compiled GZDoom 3.5.0 legacy version. I was way too much used playing mods and maps with skullshit and the doomseeker program. Despite I have a newer GPU which supports Vulkan, Graf still can go fuck himself with his OGL 3.0 requirement

More monsters + more weapons + more inventory items = more complex. Not necessarily more good.

The first time I seen the complex doom mod I excepted it would as the name implies would add quite a few features, such as giving the player more control for changing the weapon behavior or modifying it, making the artifical idiots much more challenging not by increasing its health pool by a factor of 6 million but instead like i don't know using actual tactics such as taking cover or communications to heavily screw up the player. Instead it does fun things like dealing with railguns equipped zombies immediately at the start and thus heavily favoring a RNG based gameplay instead of determined based. From the looks of it the LCA mod makes this RNG based gameplay worse by a estimated factor of 10 times, were a gold plated nigger pops in from time to time to really ruin your day.
Also I played the latest Hideous Destructor mod and I am quite surprised he actually changed the difficulty settings for a more tactical gameplay but not in the sense of "Just fuck my shit up". I managed to beat a few freedums II maps that way up to map08 or something before I got bored with this whole magazine cartridge juggling fun. I can actually quite see why the author of this HD mod wants to make the game as hard as possible, for example the SWAT like mod can be awfully easy at time as soon you get the USAS-12 weapon it makes the game a walk in the park since even from a long distance you can pop a nigga with 1-2 rounds and be done with him, 12 Gauge shells are available in abundance, in fact there is more 12 Gauge shells too loot of from then whatever ammunition the Skorpion SMG uses were I don't get to use it as often I'd would to. For my SWAT mod play through I played a few maps of strange aeons and freedums I. I like it how the camera movement imitates a drunktard and it made even more sense as soon I modded myself all the health items with vodka and beer sprites.

Is there any music mod for Doom that allows you to set custom tracks and/or fades them in when you're in combat but changes track or fades them out when exploring with no contact?
I have a doom playlist that I just want to stop managing manually while playing.

Oh wait I misread that. There are a bunch of mods that let you customize music. Jimmy's Jukebox comes to mind, but I also remember some guy on 4/vr/ making a script that puts together music wads. See if you can find one of those.

I kind of misread that too, but that's a pretty nifty thing. I liked how Serious Sam did that depending on the player's status, having a "wandering" track and a "combat" track.

It could be but it also doesn't have to be sophisticated. Even something as crude as firing and being hit could put it in combat music state which then has a cooldown before it fades to exploration music.
>>15393950
>See if you can find one of those.
They might have to do in the end. I'll try them out when I have internet again.

>depending on the player's status
That would be more complex but it would indeed be cool to have music specifically for when you're godding it at 100-200+Armour/Health and then different kind for when you're at death's door. The trickiest part wouldn't be the basics of such code but the hard stuff like having the track still technically running but fading in/out when needed, otherwise you'd just have the tracks constantly resetting to their 0s point and that would be jarring.
A good example would be how in curazy games like MGR and soon to be DMC5 where the music changes or simply adds vocals depending on what's going on. I think everyone remembers Rules of Nature even to this day from such things, that's how sick it can get.

Okay, that reminds me of how noxiousnet used to have music that was basically dependant on how many zombies were clustered together in any given round of GMOD zombie survival. More zombies had a bigger increase on a graphical meter, whereas this would also change the given tune alongside other factors. Pretty nifty stuff.

Usually you just check how many enemies are aggroed at you at the same time and how many of them are actually in (attack) range
08db87 No.15404513

>how many enemies are aggroed
As soon you fire a pistol, even enemies that are almost in some closed rooms will "wake up" and shouting around like apes. Sometimes it also happens that enemies that are stuck in a teleport box gets woken up too due to quality artificial idiot coding.
>how many of them are actually in (attack) range
Their attack range is infinite (assuming it has hitscan/missiles weapons), so good luck :^)
I know it is not a question but it triggers my autism that enemies are aggroed on some damn area I have yet to see it let alone being able to reach it.

you only load one of those test files, if it contains a hotfix for example test7_hotfix5.pk3 then you would have to load test7_dev(ANY NUMBER).pk3 first then the hotfix, you only need to load 1 of those files so in this case it is moon_man_v1.4_test9_dev1.pk3. I have to admit the test version is quite messy, but I use mostly the opportunity to see if the mod will work properly in Skullshit or not since it is compatible from the past version of the mod. Decorate and especially the ACS stuff can and will behave wildy different in Skullshit Multiplayer mode due to Netcode. One of my major problem is that TSPG hosts and other such groups decided to ban Moonman mod over some bullshit reason (hurr racism, hurr always credit the donut steele authors) so I have a hard time getting this Mod out to the people.
TL;DR: load moon_man_v1.3_test9_dev1.pk3 with Skullshit 3.0 only, you still can use other wads as long it doesn't change the monster/classes/weapons and items, like a map pack or music wads. GZDoom compatibility is not always guaranteed.

oh shit nigga what are you doing. Yes of course this mod wouldn't be recognized as a IWAD because 1) it is actually a PWAD (in PK3 format) and 2) IWAD files are the base game resource such as doom2.wad, doom.wad, freedoom1.wad, hexen.wad and so on, Sourceports have a hardcoded list of wads that are recognized automatically as IWAD.
