What are your favourite MUGEN games and characters?

I'm really liking Rurounin Kenshin Soul and sword and Serio's Castlevania Fighter, especially the latter which isn't a conventional fighting game but rather a Serie of castlevania boss fights with more movement and attack options

Saltybet is way too random for me. it's kind of fun because you see the carziest character matches made by all different guys and playstyles. Yet nothing beats the feel of a standalone MUGEN game

Well anon, Card Saga Wars, think of it like Marvel vs Capcom, then add so many characters that it'll made pointless to play another fighting game for several years and every single one would be tailor-made for the MUGEN game, iirc the amount of playable characters would've been huge at the time, but the developement stopped on 2012, while the developers keept saying that the project was still going.

I've seen at least one attempt at some guy trying to make an open source fighting game engine. Was called Shinobu or something like that. Don't think it ever went anywhere and I can't find anything about it online, the guy was making his own fighting game called Fearless nights.

Seems like using Unity/Unreal is the new deal if Punch Planet is any indication.

There have been some attempts but none of them have caught on as well. IKEMEN is an attempt at an open source MUGEN port but it's written in nigh-incomprehensible uncommented Jap code.

In all honesty a new Kunio would be mega easy to make if you have MUGEN coding knowledge, the most sprite editing you'd have to do is resize via Nearest Neighbor

I've never got to play any of them, so I can't really say. If you ever are looking for beat-em-ups to get into, though, I'd recommend River City: Rival Showdown on Easy, since Medium is a legitimate pain to start off on a new file maybe with the music set to off or NES. It's kind of an improved River City Ransom but still has the problem of you starting off with little, if you find that sort of thing a problem.

There are an inordinate number of little things, but most of how fighting games differ is in the basics. Things like walk speed, jump arcs, player feedback like hitstop and flashes, how input and buffering work are what determine how the game feels. If I took all the fireballs out of a SF game it'd still recognisably be the same game, but if I let all the characters short hop and chain combo normals then it'd turn into something completely different. Designing a character is just expanding on those fundamentals with some kind of theme or interpretation. MUGEN is a pretty good environment for figuring out what works and what doesn't since the styles and quality vary so dramatically. The only thing I'd call a constant is that you MUST have competent animation otherwise there's no way of communicating to the player.
