Night Elves allying with the Alliance was explained very well in Warcraft 3, they didn't want to be destroyed. It was a temporary alliance of necessity. The reason they continue to be in an alliance afterward is the same excuse for all the bad faction representations, because Blizzard were too incompetent to follow EverQuest's lead.
Instead of having every race be its own faction that has peaceful and violent exchanges with the various other races, they instead decided to go all in on the idea of The Horde and The Alliance for players. Thus why Elves and Trolls, Human and Worgen, Night Elves and ANYONE ELSE THAT ISN'T FURBOLG OR ELEMENTAL. I could even see a Tauren + Night Elf faction being a thing, but Tauren being allied with Goblins makes no sense whatsoever other than as a bad gameplay piece.
EverQuest had the right idea all along, players started out as a member of their given faction, whether it was High Elf, Dark Elf, Wood Elf, Human, Erudite, etc. From there you get a varied number of racial biases. For example, a Human starts off hated with the Dark Elves because Humans are Neutral and Dark Elves are evil. From there you can perform various actions to raise your factions as you see fit, kill good-aligned people and factions until the Dark Elves see you as an ally.
THIS is what World of Warcraft SHOULD HAVE BEEN, they even had factions that were SOMETHING LIKE THIS where you started off enemies and could become allies. They didn't use it for the whole game's in-game faction system for PvP reasons. The idea was that if you were undead and you saw another undead player, you saw them as an ally. Same if you saw an orc or a troll or a tauren. In EverQuest it was never so clear cut and simple and sometimes allies of the same factions would end up killing each other in combat unless it was a PvP-Faction server.
There was so many places they could have gone with the faction system, but instead they dumbed it down. People love to act like the original WoW was hard cut and raw and complex, but it was babbies first fucking MMO. Games like EverQuest and City of Heroes/Villains were doing the dynamic PvP/Faction thing all along, while World of Warcraft comes strutting in using things that everyone else already had and acting like they created the fucking genre. And before that UO didn't even use factions, if you were caught walking around in the wrong area by the wrong group of people they'd kill you and take everything but your boots. Some groups even took your boots.
If you ever thought of yourself as the "good guy" or "bad guy" in World of Warcraft, you kind of missed the fact that the game has no such forethought to it. They really did try to emulate EverQuest and then failed and decided to go with a red and blue team.

It's entirely thanks to the dungeon finder. People do nothing but continuously grind quests while queuing for dungeons. Before people would gather in towns to socialize and find groups and shit, now they just queue dungeons and only talk to their guild. Dungeon finders kill spontaneous social interaction in MMOs which is a good part of the fun in those games.

They are pretty much a flytrap for new players or people who are curious about new races. Once they subbed (or worse, pre-ordered), they find out that they have to grind their asses for about 6-8+ weeks to unlock them. Reputation grind, with Legion story in Argus completed (hint: not fucking possible because no one do timed world quests that needs a raid anymore), then a max level character on the side you wants to unlock. So they have to shell out for a boost then IF they eventually managed to get story done.
Big salt party on the Brazzard forums too. Apparently, even normalfags and returnees are complaining about how ridiculous it is and how it is pretty much a scam, Brazzdrones getting called out and eaten and lol random forum bans because mods there are huge faggots too.

Forgetting characters left the world feeling plastic. The forced faction conflict contradicted most characters and factions, which meant most had to be unceremoniously rewritten or dunked so Blizzard could save face, as opposed to just writing a proper faction conflict. Chewing through everything quickly meant their substantial stuff, from TBC to WoTLK, undermined the impact of what was there and left us with retarded shit like void lords.
TBC is especially guilty of that. Kael, Vashj and Illidan were all interesting in TFT but were loot pinatas in there that didn't even have a good reason to fight us.

Actually the reason a lot of people play the Horde is because they somehow think they're the Underdogs, but the distribution of dominance is pretty much equal across all servers. If you ever felt like you were the underdog, it's because you fucking did it to yourself, there was a server group right next to you that was the exact opposite. When they started adding in inter-realm play, all of the sudden the whole "dominance" thing just kind of faded away because suddenly you had alliance and horde dominated servers playing together, yet horde still believed themselves to be the underdogs.

Server i played in was sort of an oddball at that, Alliance was probably 65% of the population the very least yet Horde dominated everything from BG's to World PvP and even led the raid progress by a landslide according to forums. None of the Alliance guilds really did Naxx while Horde had several guilds doing so etc.
Kind of weird but i guess the server just somehow attracted the 'special needs' kind of players to the Alliance side and the numbers actually reversed once free migrations became a thing to the point it was like 3 to 1 in favor for the Horde.

I can give you enough non-wow examples if you really want that, but you should be aware of what orcs do to everything around them since WC1 and WC2.

Night Elf mages were only added in Cataclysm, and made sense in context. It was explained that Night Elf mages were specifically the highborn Night Elves who had been holed up in Dire Maul since vanilla. Of course, if you started a new one, they still started in Teldrassil, which kind of ruined the conceit of it all. Same thing with Dwarf shamans, who were likely meant to represent the introduction of Wildhammer clan dwarves into the Alliance (since they and their related sub clans played a part in the Twilight Highlands storyline).
A lot of the more unusual race/class combos in Cataclysm were like this, and kind of served as a proto-allied races sort of thing. Just implemented badly.

I barely played wow, and mostly from private/hack servers (the most one I played was a Wrath of the lich king one that auto leveled you up to the maximun level), and it was mostly to explore stuff (Classes, cities, ares, etc…), and to raid other areas of the opposing faction. And it was a temporal enjoyment.
Is there any point to play Wow now for these reasons? Because being free to play, althought 20 level max only, could be interesing to at least to temporaly play to explore stuff. But then again, everytime i see only worse changes happening to the game…

But the Tauren were the best race. They were the whole "noble savage" concept and since it is a fantasy world that's 100% canon and makes sense. Both the Alliance and Horde were industrious factions that were seeking in their own ways to conquer the world and defeat each other, but even in faction wars or lore (since the devs never cared about them) the Tauren were just kind of off doing their own thing for the most part, providing token support to the Orcs as payback for helping them out, but never with any malicious intent to dominate and rule. Blizz kind of wrote themselves into a hole with the tauren since their character as a race were just peace loving hippies that lived off the land, which means they had basically zero influence on the power struggles that happened in the world since they didn't really care

In my opinion, I think the game would have been improved if Blizzard made the game by having the Alliance & the Horde, but that, besides giving importance to your own faction/race, that there would be periods in which two, or multiple members of the faction would fight between themselves (like a conflict/small skirmish). in that way, it would give the game more content by having regular season of mini wars between, for example, Stormwind vs Ironforge, in which Alliance members can fight between themselves, without need of going to specific PvP areas, or to change account to become the other side.
If not at the beginning, this could have implemented to any of the expansions; Hell, precisely the Battle for Azeroth expansion looks PERFECT for this!. But nope, no new change, and still forced to the same boring dynamics of Horde vs Alliance. Wasted potential.

Yeah, classes are very easy to play which in turn makes raids easy in this game. The only difficulty in WoW raiding is getting 20 people to do simple mechanics perfectly. You don't have any combos, no dot management whatsoever. You just use 1 skill to put 1 dot on an enemy. You don't need to use 2-3 skills beforehand to land a dot. There is no real planning or rotations like there are in a MMO such as XIV.
XIV has way superior class design as well as superior balance. Just sucks they have so much content droughts and release less than 10 endgame bosses in a single year.

Please. Garrosh was just a shadow of former days of power. He was a good start for horde re-armament, but not even he could compare to a fully revved up horde back from Warcraft 1 who were war incarnate, not just unwilling servants of demons they were retconned into in WC3. I actually went alliance when horde dumped Garrosh, since I never liked thrall for giving willing ear to Medivh who was also slain back in WC1 by humans for being top traitor.

As a vanilla Horde player, we were the ganker bad guys and all Alliance were noobs trying to quest. We were always outnumbered and it made us strong, the Alliance players were turn keying pve scrubs; you didn't raid or get world bosses as Horde unless you cleaved through at least a few Alliance raids. You weren't a vanilla Horde player unless you could gank dungeon parties, with your wits and a bag of iron grenades, then spamming kek in /yell while camping them– just so they invite more friends for you to gank.
No normalfags played horde since we were all hunchy and ugly, it was glorious and pure.
Nu-horde players don't deserve to call themselves Horde, they are too weak for even a virtual world.

IIRC, FF14 dev team shrunk to a very small team now. SE had put a lot of people during the ARR, then shrunk it one time at HW time. After they see that HW did great and did not need extra help from other teams, they left the team even smaller for SB that is why the content drought happened.

The subscription is good because it keeps the game off from poor brazillians and retards. Plus if it doesnt have brutal microtransaction explotation, it gives reason for people who are tired of absurd grinding & microtransactions, to buy the game & pay subscription.
But today, even games like Wow have a subscription mode AND absurd microtransactions/grind. So if you as a developer do that, might as well just make your game F2P. Hell, Wow is already f2p, but in a very limited way by forcing you to only 20 level max. Its not bad, because it lets people explore more or less the game to test it if they want it. But as said before, Wow already is too much full of microtransactions, doesnt keep any quality that justifies the subscription pay, and Nu-Blizzard really wants new subs, so might as well go f2P to get all the people as posible.

It's extremely small, and even smaller since everyone has troll's blood potions to have a lesser version of it. Trolls from what I have scene should only be shadow priests, hunters, and then maybe mages. Hunters because any race is good as a hunter, shadow priests because of bonus shadow damage, and mages because mages can be really good with blink to run away from a bad situation. The other classes such as rogue, shaman, and warrior should always be played as one of the 3 other races because of their CC, anti-CC effects. The orcs resist stun is great, and will of forsaken is really good to. Taurens have war stomp which makes them really good for tanking lots of weak mobs in stralthome, and a few other places. Generally trolls are the weakest race for whatever class you can play.
