Why modern video games are such boring time wasting slogs with no direction or challenge? Last time i opened up some arcade on MAME or snes game on emulator, i am already in game, i am having blasting FUN and in 30 minutes or 1 hour i already had enough fun for today.

Back in my days parents had advisory to only let children play 2 hours of a video game per day, no more. But those two hours in some shmup or battletoads is more than enough to have loads of adrenaline pumping fun.

But in modern open world game or rpg its impossible to have fun in 2 hours, because 2 hours is usually half of a fucking tutorial. And then comes the grind slog for hours upon hours. Turning your modern game on and playing it for like an hour is barely playing it. Most games nowadays also have kojima-tier cutscenes from 30 minutes to an hour.

And then you have people who want this fucking empty gameplay to be simplified even more! For the fucking story for fuck sake! How?! And they say its because they have a job and children or something! Like that faggot who told that God of War needs skippable bosses.

I mean lets pretend i have a job, and the only gap in my daily time is around 1 hour of free time that can be spent on anything. Will i have fun in that 1 hour with a modern game? No. It will be zero progression, walking slowly through barely interactive environment, while listening to crappy dialogues and mostly fucking cutscenes. Its like they want you to become a fucking neet and waste your entire day on a game to even scrape a bit of fun.

>two hours a day

This should apply to the internet, as well. Children and adults. Video games? They should be played for twelve hours per day.

Just bust out an emulator and play games from before 2010.

The reason current games are shit is two-fold

>older games were harder because the industry was small enough that you'd only get 1 game every few months, so making a game obtuse to make sure kids got their parents' money's worth was a decent strategy to ensure they think this form of entertainment is worth the expense, and come back to buy another game.

>older games were "richer" because the physical constraints of data storage were much more stringent. Devs had to make sure every little piece of final game was worth cramming into the cartridge/CD/floppy disk(s). People cite Pokemon R/B/Y being a buggy mess because of the coding wizardry required to cram all of that data into a Gameboy cart.

Now in slightly more modern times

<you have hundreds of game studios pumping out title after title. You can't risk making an experience frustrating, because your consumers will just go to a competitor. Congrats, (man)kid! You completed the tutorial! That's a mighty achievement, so we gave you e-peen points/a trophy. Oh, you completed the next main objective after the tutorial? Didn't think you'd stick around that long. You're sure the overachiever! Have some more e-peen points/another trophy.

<DVDs, Blu-Ray and digital downloads kept lifting the data constraints so much that that studios aren't careful anymore about what they include into their game. Cram it with all sorts of pointless crap, and spend inordinate amounts of man hours and budget on the graphics; the machines will still run it. In an industry like that, there's no point in cutting out the fat, especially when you're trying for broad appeal as an answer to the aforementioned problem. Plenty of retards roped in by the mass appeal strategy will think the next game you'll churn out will be good because it includes crafting mechanics, just like that other (unrelated) game they liked. One reason so many people liked Portal was because it didn't fuck around pointlessly. Only spacial and velocity puzzles. No mini-games, no side objectives, no interruptions, just straight and to the point puzzles with some well written banter. webm related. inb4 e-celeb; he makes a good point.

Don't you know? We recently had another exodus wave from cuckchan and possibly elsewhere. May as well rehash everything that was already established in hopes that they assimilate. You can already see them posting here and there like it's the same shitty community they fled It's like when leftycucks abandon their pseudo-communist state that have gone to shit because of the policies they voted for themselves, but when they find that this new city they moved into is much too far too the right of them, they start enacting changes that are more inline to what they've come to expect, and the cycle repeats and while we can't really ensure that they don't turn the culture we have here into the one they've grown tired of, at least giving them something to learn brings the chance of that happening down from 100% For all we know, OP could be from cuckchan/plebbit and has only recently come to the realization that led him to make this faggot ass thread. or he's just datamining for a publisher

Pretty much. Over the past few months it was like every poster had suddenly guzzled two gallons of soy and dropped their IQ by twenty points. The normalfaggotry levels here are disgusting. Worst of all what oldfags are left have left themselves complacent even after experiencing /leftpol/ (I still laugh about how they changed boards) and /intl/ raids and aren't aggressively upholding the culture like in the past.

Just this year more niche games like .hack Last Recode were getting discussion and the posts were extensive and detailed in technical quality and experience before summer. Now virtually everyone has ADHD and actively refuses to learn something simple like webm rendering. It's absolutely sad that a racebaiting bread bitching about an Unreal graphics demo reminds me more of the old board rather than the current catalog.

You're stating the obvious, OP. But for the sake of your question, it's because with the needlessly high costs of making and marketing video games, marketing/publishing suits have dumbed down video games in order to be as accessible to as big enough of an audience as humanly possible. Something we can all agree with is that things usually do one or two things really well, and something trying to do everything well, simply doesn't. That's what happened to video games. In order to appeal to the biggest possible market every game's a jack of all trades, but completely uninteresting. It's the same reason why even the box arts of today are all very bland and similar. People don't make games to please an audience anymore, they make games to make money.

Indie games, ones made with a passionate, but small team, end up being the ones with creative ideas. Whether those ideas are good are a case by case argument, but something like Rocket League on concept alone is infinitely more interesting than AAA open world shooting sneaking RPG romance game/ cinematic experience #84. Hopefully after the second and hopefully soon video game game crash, we'll be back to the old days of a bunch of people in basements throwing things against the wall and hoping it works.

>"This game too short" "This game is too short" "This game is too short".

Well here you go, 50 hours of content. Wow! Such a good value. Did you know you can finish Resident Evil 2 in 3 hours! What a shitty joke of a game.

>"Let me go anywhere" "Let me go anywhere" "Let me go anywhere linearity is bad reeee"

Here you go, faithful consumer. 500 miles of copy and pasted wilderness. Wow! Amazing. Hand holdy games like Deus Ex can't compete with this!

I have always, 100% railed against this crap since the PS2 was hot and GTA III was getting big. I could see the precedent this stupidity was setting.

Indie games also have an inherent problem, though: since by definition there would be significantly less resource management involved in their development, a lot of indie games are janky as fuck despite shining in other departments due to overambitious or just plain autistic devs. With companies at least you have other people putting a leash on the hacks' ambitions.

>a racebaiting bread bitching about an Unreal graphics demo

>reminds me more of the old board rather than the current catalog.

Pics related, they remind me more of normalfags and their normalfag forums when they drop tidbits of RP into their posts.

Check out the third pic. Found that on a Splatoon thread.

Remember the 5 monkeys and the spray of water thought experiment? That shit don't work of the monkeys don't beat the newfag for climbing the steps or if there are enough newfags to fend off the oldfag monkeys.

I dropped all social media and kept only to 4chan, then 8chan after gamergate broke out. I don't know where else to go. It seems the "anonymity only brings out the worst in people" boogeyman failed. I remember even CP used to get posted regularly on cuckchan. Everything is fucking sanitized now, so now cancer spreads unimpeded

I blame bazinga for making all nerdy stuff chic, and once normalfag eyes were on the industry, people realized there was some serious money to be made and they wormed their way in. Same thing happened to comics and /tg/games. I wish this stuff kept its stigma of being losers' hobbies. and that the fat dude photo-bombing people's plumber's cracks at MtG events wasn't banned from them. that's the kind of attitude that solves problems

There is one more thing.

Making games so slow and grindy is conductive to the "games as a service" crap that publishers are trying to impose. Games are designed as skinnerboxes that can support template-based content releases with little substance, support microtransactions, etc.

Publishers want continuous payments and the ability to permanently kill off a game whenever they want so that it doesn't compete with newer more expensive releases.

That's true, but it's not the full picture. Remember all the "gamers are dead" articles? They aren't going to walk away from it, they're going to stay around and take the industry in their direction. That's what it means to co-opt and change from within. Look at these posts

>>15242463

>>15242492

They clearly don't care that the new place they occupy isn't a fit for them. They'll stay around and warp this place to their liking.

>>15242633

Interestingly enough, they also made their money on the psychological trick of very small payments you weren't keeping track of: quarters. A roll of quarters is $20, and that was worth more then than it is today. Talk about motivation to git gud. If an arcade had a token system, they were using their version of virtual currency. Games As A Service is just a new buzzword to a business model that had been around for a long time. Only reason that model died was because people started to get vidya for the home with a single, upfront payment for the vidya they could play without limits. The only difference now is having internet to let them bring the "Service" part to your house, and the barrier that stopped the arcade as a business model was no longer an issue. It's alright, goy. You won't get a game over and start from the first level if you don't pay. We're not that greedy, goy. But you will have to wait 2 days or work extra hard to see the kind of progress everyone else is gaining. It's only $5 for 125 gems, goy.

I can see this argument, but I'm not sure how I feel about it.

I still go to arcades, I love spectacle of the whole thing. The recently released Fireteam Raven with its 130 inch 4k screen and padded seats being the latest example of this, while not necessarily being a great game on its own I don't regret the trip or the price of admission. Time Crisis 5 still brings the quality though, recently 1cc'd it. I like eating slightly above average food with my friends and all that.

Am I just a cuck for a different payment model? I don't know, but it seems more fair this way. You are paying for an experience of sorts, like a movie ticket. If I don't feel I am getting good quality for my money I can stop at any time. You are paying more to play more. With mobile games like your example or bad autism treadmills on console you are usually paying more to pay less, which tells me all I need to know about the quality of your game. So fucking good I'll pay to not play it.

There is no pretense to ownership. People like to talk about how gaming is "the most value for money" you can have in entertainment because games are "only $60* and you can keep them forever**"

*+ $30 for the season pass and $60 a year for the online service

**until the authentication servers fuck out or the patches go offline

I forget how good arcade force feedback feels at times. I can see why arcades = games as a service isn't a very good argument because of this, and the entire atmosphere of lights, sounds, and other people (if you dig that sort of thing).

I heard a D&B opened up about 40 mins from where I live. Maybe I'll stop by sometime and see if they got the new halo cabinet.

The trick with games as a service is getting the arcade model into the home.

It's easy to get someone to pay in installments for entertainment outside of the home environment, but the expectation changes when a person buys a copy of the entertainment, rather than a ticket to a showing of it.
