I'm not playing it because it takes me quite literally 5 minutes to load into the menu at a minimum. I counted.

That aside, the game itself is a disaster too. Map and game mode selection is limited, you have to grind for characters, dropping armor shards when killed is a dumb feature and retains the great problem of snowballing in Quake, the netcode is shit, maps look bland as fuck and cosmetics can make you blend into textures really fucking badly. Doesn't help that you can't use picmip either to eliminate these problems.

I'm gonna preface this by saying that I don't necessarily hate all of the changes QC makes to the basic Quake formula. Yes, anything above any beyond basic Quake is technically "unnecessary", but when pro-mode exists there's no real reason to invest money into making "Quake 3 Arena again, but this time it's released in 2018". I mean, Quake Live already exists too, so really they had to do something to refresh the formula.

As far as fixing what's already there:

#1 - This game needs to not have a price of entry. The only people that can get away with having a multiplayer-only game that's not F2P are Blizzard and whatever indie dev happens to strike gold one some new game paradigm that hasn't yet been totally exploited. It's just not a business model that makes sense anymore, especially considering that they already have grinding systems in place for unlocking content.

#2 - This game desperately needs a performance overhaul. If you aren't running it off an SSD with current-gen gaming hardware, the load times are absolutely unacceptable. It takes literally a minute just to get into any menu, let alone get into a match itself. I tested it out switching between having it load off my HDD and SSD, and the SSD definitely helps, but not everyone owns an SSD, even today. For how simple a game it is, having these kind of performance demands are insane.

#3 - SHOOT WHOEVER DESIGNED THE UI. Even ignoring the atrocious load times, just getting INTO AND OUT OF A MATCH is an absolute fucking annoying slog. Every single fucking menu takes time to load and is either preceded by or followed by some stupid pointless extra animation or shot of the players or what-have-you. The worst part is that most of it takes at least 5 seconds before you can actually skip over it, so you're constantly sitting there waiting just to play the fucking game you want to play. It totally ruins the flow of just playing, no other game I know of is like this.

#4 - Balance the fucking abilities by reducing their general power level. Some abilities in the game are pretty well-balanced, eg Ranger's orb, but most of them are insanely overpowered in specific game modes by virtue of their design. The fact that one hero gets invuln AND invis and that can be used in a 1v1 match mode is insane, there's essentially no counterplay to it except hoping they're really bad at aiming or following enemies. The variance across the different modes is insane and ruins the intent of giving players freedom of choice, some characters are just objectively better than others in certain modes.

#5 - Armor and health are resources, don't give any character additional armor or health to start with, and make all movement speeds equal at base. It's okay to give a character reduced health or armor as a trade-off for a strong ability, I'd say, but giving characters bonus starting value is just bad design. People coming into QC are gonna expect each character to be basically equal, and will get frustrated when they realize that some are harder to kill than others without any time spent controlling items.

What? Arena shooters never took off on consoles, specifically because the two most popular ones of it's day were only online with the least popular console. Their PS2 versions came out as offline-only in a multiplayer game and to absolutely nobody's surprise failed spectacularly. Call of Duty I and II did alright on the PC, but I remember it being near as popular as Tribes, Quake, or UT were at their peak. After that nobody gave a shit, and most people moved on to Counter Strike and Team Fortress. Console shooters moved more towards slower-paced games like Halo which had story campaigns you could play offline as well as online multiplayer. COD didn't get popular on consoles until Modern Warfare, and meanwhile nobody gave a shit about COD on PC. That's where they really diverged, at the end of last generation, as consoles became COD Boxes and PCs were using CS:GO to farm skins and shit they could sell on the Steam Marketplace. That's pretty much how things stayed until PUBG, which only got popular because it also had drops you could monetize by opening them on a stream, trading them for cash, or reselling them in a skin lottery. Consoles were cut off from that marketplace, but with Microsoft hyping PUBG as "the most played game ever" to go along with all the streamers and shit - people were left hungry for a game - not a shallow money laundering scheme - which EPIC capitalized on to sell FortNite (which - like it or hate it, FortNite is at least functional and doesn't look like a lazy asset flip).

And that's where things stand now as I see it. COD didn't take the Arena shooter audience. It took the Halo audience. CS/CS:GO & Team Fortress/TF2 took the arena shooter audience. If the PS2 had pushed for Mouse and Keyboard support and launched with a model so that QIIIA & UT could have online multiplayer when they were still at their peak - the shooter genre might end up looking very different. You'd certainly have a fuck of a lot less whack-a-mole TPS with proper aiming inputs that people would have already been used to using much as they are with racing wheels or flight sticks.

Maybe arena shooters would be more successful if every new instance of them didn't mercilessly try to copy Quake. The middle ground solution for this shit is to make all of the characters into skins. Then take the different passive movement abilities and allow a player to pick one in a "load out" of sorts.

You like rocket jumping? Take ranger's passive, you prefer air dashing? Take clutch's passive, etc.

Then completely remove all of the activated abilities. They're all stupid.

They really really need to get rid of the "hero" shit tho. If they're still unwilling to go this far, then split the options into three classes, (light med hvy) and still allow players to choose their passive and character skin (maybe limiting skins to their respective weight class).

The absolutely god awful SaberTech engine will preclude this game from EVER being good. Many people don't realize that the previous Quake games were good because the COMMUNITY was responsible for the gameplay. id Software made a rock solid engine that the mods then built upon. QC on the other hand has a terrible engine and a couple of dullards (SyncError and Sponge) to build the rules, champions, and game modes. It's a clusterfuck, and the faster it dies the better for the afps genre. All hope at this point should be put into Diabotical, since the engine is actually good and has an ex-Quake pro helming the development team.

He didn't, though. In fact I don't even think he's old enough to understand the point. We were playing these "arena shooters" when they were new, and we were kids/teenagers. The industry did nothing, really, to entice new players. Then as we went off to college or work, the populations declined. When we had time off to try to get a game going, no one else did, young faggots said the games "look like shit", or the servers / lobby tools were dead.
