f0249f No.15234619
Old threads ded so its time for a new one. Minetest 5.0.0 dev server has been running for a while now, host switched to LuaJIT and PostgreSQL some time ago so the server has much less lag now if you played earlier on. New mods were added like technic_armor, mob_horse, realtime entity elevators, a shop mod, and 3D_armor. mobs_animal is back as well so you should see cows jumping to their deaths off of high places now. The server is using the new Carpathian map generator and running various mods like technic and dfcaverns, see last image for a verbose list. If you've never played Minetest before the main differences between it and Minecraft are:
>Lua modding API/subgame stuff
>Cubic worlds, about 31000 nodes in all directions (62,000x62,000x62,000 nodes), so that means deep mining and plenty of vertical room.
>Bigger caves
>Sneak jump (enabled on this server)
>Engine written in C++
>Different map generators, written in C++
>Libre software and content
>Finnish memes like mese and oerrki
>Probably other differences (I'm not up to date on Minecraft features/mods)
You will need a 5.0.0 dev client to join, there are autobuilds for some OSes here: https://gitlab.com/minetest/minetest/pipelines and a general builds forum on the Minetest forums: https://forum.minetest.net/viewforum.php?f=42
If you can't find an up to date build for your system I recommend you compile the latest version of Minetest yourself.
Server IP and port number: 80.103.13.77:1240
You'll need to set up a password so make sure to fill in the password and username field before you join.

Minetest is not a mod for Minecraft, its a game running on a fork of the Irrlicht engine written in C++, with some of it written as a subgame in Lua although that can be tossed out and Minetest can be treated as some sort of weird engine voxel engine. You could generate nothing but nodes with a texture of Todd Howard's face on them if you wanted to. You could put Todd Howard's face on the main menu background and the subgame icons too.
>>15234682
>does it still have that awkward rendering issue when you break blocks?
Do you mean where the block sort of lags a bit sometimes?
>nice lava fall except for the lava texture, well that might look better animated.
The lava texture can be replaced on your side via texture packs if you find the server's textures hideous, you just need to find a better texture.

It depends on how long ago you last played/heard of it, see the changelog (not up to date for 5.0.0 dev versions past February) for some details. "relatively new" is years ago since the project started in 2011.

Hunger is not installed on this server, and its not in Minetest Game (the default subgame for Minetest) although theres a couple hunger mods out there.

You can try and put duct tape all over it with enchantments, XP, turning combat into a rythm game and whatever the fuck, it still won't be fun because the game wasn't designed for combat.
Nothing short of starting the game from scratch can fix the combat, but they should've embraced it and focused on the fun stuff as opposed to turning it into a meme RPG.

world generation is better than minecraft's, the worlds are larger than anyone will ever fully explore with depth and height to match, which allows for ridiculously large cave systems and from pictures seen in these threads look pretty cool with stalactites and stalagmites and cave crystals
physics and swimming are problems with the engine and would require forking to fix, although it's more an issue of not getting the same sensory feedback from movement as one would get from minecraft rather than a problem with the movement itself

Your beloved host here, who's at work and will be until ~19:00 UTC+2
I browsed some protection mods, but I like none of them. I've thought about developing my own (quite trivial tbh), but the protection eventually wears out if you don't log in.
Some questions, however, remain:
First: after how long should it wear out? I've thought one week, but not sure yet.
Second question: how much land should each person be able to claim?
Third question: should it be free to claim? I think there should be some cost as a proof of work (1 gold ingot/day?), so that you don't just hop in with 9000 accounts and claim the whole map.

It should be something renewable so gold sucks (I only found about 4 gold ores in my entire play time anyway).

How about max number of claim days is 10, you can only claim 2 days worth of protection per day you log in? I think 20x20 is alright. Perhaps make it so you can claim bigger area with increased cost.
5fbd85 No.15246745
>>15246736
So, maybe, the cost is 1 BDC (bread/day/chunk) until you reach 10 claimed chunks, then it becomes 2 BDC until 20, then 4, etc.?
In other words, the cost is 2^(chunks/10) BDC.
I don't really understand what you mean by “2 days worth of protection per day.” Do you mean, you can only claim 2 chunks on any given day?
563b07 No.15246761
>>15246745
I meant claim two days worth of protection per day, up to 10 days. To minimize the risk of dickheads logging in once a week just to mass claim land for greifing. Maybe 3 days per day is more reasonable.
Example:
>make claim
>buy 3 days worth of protect
>log in next day, have 2 days left, buy 3 more for 5 total
>day after that have 4 days, buy 3 more, have 7
etc.

>It becomes more expensive the more land you buy
Yeah I didn't realize we were talking about 2 different things.
So basically;
For every day you log in, your max number of chunks increases by 1.
For every 10 chunks you have claimed, your bread payment cost doubles, starting from 1.
For each day you log in, your protection time increases by ~3 days, up to a maximum of a week/month or so.

You’re going about this the wrong way. Placing any sorts of limitations are just gonna hamper builders. It won’t stop a dedicated griefer. Nothing will. You need an active admin to monitor. Here’s something that will work:
Each player can claim X amount. Claims are free and indefinite. If someone needs more, they ask for it. The admin should periodically check the logs, teleport to new claims and check if they’re valid. Anything suspicious, claims next to others with no interesting structures, attempts to box someone in etc. gets purged right away.
5fbd85 No.15246988
>>15246956
>You need an active admin to monitor
This is good theory, but in practice you cannot guarantee to always have someone on, especially if they're hotpocketting and not paid to do precisely that job.
I myself have social and physiological obligations during about 20 hours a day, this leaves 4 hours during which I might be on.
Right now, I've given powers to one other person (varchar), but he's got a life of his own, and is not always on either.
Adding more mods means taking more risks. I do not know who is, and who is not to be trusted. A rogue mod is more dangerous than a rogue player. Plus, larger moderation teams tend to create unnecessary drama, and power breeds corruption.
Do you leave the enforcement of "common sense" rules to each mod's discretion, or do you write a comprehensive set of illicit behaviours? Who gets to decide what is illicit behaviour, and what is not?
In-game limitations, on the other hand, are active all the time. They are not subject to subjectiveness, they will not go rogue (in theory), they will not stir drama.
On claims being free: if, for some reason, there is no mod at all for 3-4 hours, it's enough for any autist to make 50 accounts claiming 10 chunks each. And then you're left with the tedious work of figuring out which are legitimate, and which are not.
On claims being indefinite: you eventually end up with a shitton of land owned by players who have left the server long ago, a dead museum like tons of protected servers end up being, where you have to walk through empty buildings for 500 blocks until you can start doing something.
Maybe that's my just my personal approach to the game, that things should not be eternal. I don't know if I have done so in the threads, but in game I have expressed already my dislike of game mechanisms that produce infinite resources, or have effects forever.
If it were up to me well it is, but I prefer consulting the players before actually doing that stuff, torches would fade away, stone bricks would turn into cracked and mossy stone, and from there into cobblestone, and maybe from there into gravel, wood and tatch would rot away, etc.
In the end, the best solution is most probably a mix between active human moderation, and a set of comprehensive in-game rules to limit the damage done should the human moderation fail.

The great meme war occurred pretty much as we had predicted. Too many players, not enough space or resources to go around. The details are trivial and pointless, the reasons, as always, purely retarded ones.
Assburger was nearly wiped clean of locked chests. A great cleansing, an atomic spark struck by blocky hands, quickly raged out of control. Spears of nuclear fire rained from the skies. Entire autism creations were swallowed in flames and fell beneath the boiling oceans. Old nmobs detritus was almost extinguished, their spirits becoming part of the background radiation that blanketed the server.
A quiet darkness fell across the server, lasting many hours. Most survived the devastation. Some had been fortunate enough to reach safety, taking shelter in great underground mineshafts. When the great darkness passed, these mineshafts opened, and their inhabitants emerged to begin their lives again.

>world generation is boring
What do you find boring about it? There are several map generators and we're using the Carpathian one which is on the realistic side (plains, hills, and mountains with river-like formations and dried up river beds, lakes, ponds, inlets suitable for harbors, sometimes a sort of canyon forms inbetween mountains), otherwise theres valleys (somewhat realistic, has above sea level rivers with river water, a gradual rise from seas to hills and mountains, canyons), v5 (unrealistic, floating blobs sometimes, not as dramatic in sudden height elevation as v7), v7 (unrealistic, sudden height increases and plateaus, tall sheer cliff like mountains). I think the cave openings/ravines/etc may be different on each mapgen but I'm not sure. The dfcaverns mod is in use which gives us some underground biomes with fungal origins that must live in low light/darkness, they die in sunlight/high amounts of light from a different source. Theres a dungeon layer about -150 to -250 underground from the geomoria mod, theres also the magma conduit mod which generates these lava chutes that appear at the surface but also underground.
Mainly it needs more surface biomes, although they've been improved a bit in the dev branch, and above sea level lakes/ponds/rivers/streams (there is an old mod for pools of water above sea level but its probably not suitable for the new map generator). Maybe when 5.0.0 is out Ethereal/Farming Redo/Bakedclay will be updated for it (right now it won't use some of the new stuff added in 5.0.0 and is funky on Carpathian mapgen) and someone could host a server with that since it has interesting biomes with big redwoods/mesa.
MC mapgen does not interest me much, most of it seems to be hacked up through biomes on the surface, and neutral randomly generated settlements seemingly have no real purpose other than to hand out free shit (which defeats the purpose of having to craft and build things yourself or fight to get them) and have a bunch of strange jews open and close doors all day. There is that height limit which stops you from having very tall mountains, and the limit on the depth of the world makes it impossible to do the supermassive caverns possible in Minetest.

Spoonfeeding, the main alternative is Mesecons which has sort of a circuitry look going, there are also addon mods for it like digilines that add more features and it even has its own website at http://mesecons.net/. An alternative is the stuff found in TechPack, sort of a minimalist pipeworks/mesecons/technic alternative with a wooden lumber look which you can find here: https://forum.minetest.net/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=19784
>>15236930
It actually isn't, they've added stuff to Minetest Game (the default subgame) in the dev versions like new textures, kelp, map, binoculars, improvements to trees/biomes, fireflies, probably other stuff I'm forgetting. The main menu was also improved a bit and they're working on some sort of download manager/install manager for mods it seems (check the "Content" tab).

Theres a crafting library that works as a blank slate for a new crafting system which you can find here: https://forum.minetest.net/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=17588, but yeah the game should generally allow more than a weird variant of MC's crafting system.

The reason he chimped out on the other thread is because someone built a block swastika. It takes practically nothing to set him off. He also admitted to using Reddit, Discord, and Cuckchan. Just something to think about. We tricked him into sending us this screenshot, so he isn't too bright either.

We have a mod for that that also does a lot more, like generate underground biomes and caves.

Regular mobs tend not to be very hard because one or two nodes stops them unless they have an explosive attack, I think more passive threats like radiation/heat/cold/fast lava flows/water that can actually drown you/cave ins/nodal mobs/traps would be more interesting and less expensive (less use of new 3D models made in programs like Blender, less pathfinding, less/no animations needed), for when you venture out into the unknown anyway. The actual mobs should be threatening to your base, like mobs that spit fire at your wooden structures/farms, ones that release poison gas into open holes in your structures, ones that blight the area with an organic nodal disease, ones that drop a small nuke or something, simple builders/diggers (actually has been done in certain mobs for Minetest) that get over your barriers/through them/under them. Something not so pointlessly non-threatening or basic like the current mobs in any of these voxel games.
>>15248507
Its a removed mob.
>>15248454
They do die from water, trap one underwater and wait like 5-10 minutes. Could also put a pit under the booty boxes.

Well there's some funky shit going on with the digtron, when I climbed back down the ladder to it it stopped but still had about 100 blocks left to go and when I started it back up it said 'there were unloaded chucks' and after I packed it up to move it back up a ways the inventory had disappeared, but the chuck issue was solved
089852 No.15284306
>>15278904
Yep, there are few (probably currently unsolvable) bugs with the digtron, such as it moving the blocks but not moving the metadata (such as inventories). Happened to me once on the whole 31k way, resulting in an unremovable block (because it had a non-empty inventory which it couldn't show).
Another weird bug is a large digtron moving sideways very often got stuck complaining about fuel; removing and placing back the automated pusher solved that, but rotating it each time was very annoying, so I switched to a smaller digtron. If you visit the tunnel in >>15277140 you'll see the result.

The Minetest devs finally updated their changelog for the dev version if you guys want to take a look at it: https://dev.minetest.net/Changelog#0.4.16_.E2.86.92_5.0.x_.28Not_yet_released.29
Things have calmed down on the server and there's only a few people still playing I think, I suppose we could talk about what to do when 5.0.0 comes out and things are more stable (fire actually working, for one thing). I've been fiddling with the Voxelgarden "game" for Minetest in singleplayer, seems to have some good ideas and it actually modifies physics but its incompatible with moreblocks and the mapgen for map generators other than the v6 map generator is incomplete.
Oh yeah, beds started working after the admin updated, I found out the hard way…
