Uh.. Sweet Tooth's only friend in the original games was a paper bag. I also don't recall him showing sexual thrills for his violence, either. He just has an urge to kill because Calypso is diving into his dreams and incepting him. The big difference is just that Sweet Tooth isn't much of an actual character in the first bunch of games. Different characters like Yellowjacket, Roadkill, and Dark Tooth are related to him, but in Sweet Tooth's stories he doesn't have much going on. He's just on the cover because he looks cool. Also he takes over in Twisted Metal 4 but even there a henchman does all the talking for him for some reason.

2012 really doesn't make sense in the same universe as Black. They have similar tones but, for example, Sweet Tooth meets Calypso for the first time in both, and 2012 is his origin. You could say it's a prequel to Black I guess but there's nothing to really imply that.

3 and 4 still take place after 1 and 2, and though Head-On makes it so you can sort of ignore them, it also doesn't go out of its way to contradict them either. For example, in Grasshopper's ending, it says she's been in a coma for 12 or 15 years. 12 fits if Head-On is right after 2, and 15 fits if 3 and 4 are canon.

Also Small Brawl sorta works in the original continuity too if you squint. Not like the other games' stories all make perfect sense either.

The original Shadow was a legitimately solid character. He worked as an even cockier, but "evil Sonic" and he went from wanting justified revenge against humanity for destroying his family he was created to help to realization, redemption and dying a hero, even seemingly impacting Sonic and making him grow more from the whole experience bidding farewell to him.

Then when he unnaturally came back, they just made him edgier as a testing bed for things too out of character for Sonic because they naturally had nothing to do with him, so he just became some anti-hero Sonic that could be seen doing villainous shit again. Shadow is amusing with certain dialogue, actions and now nonchalant live shitposting about anime being "a highly respected form of art" and not a mistake, but the way everything's gone since he was originally supposed to die feels like some tragic bittersweet ongoing joke and by extension, Shadow himself.

The Switch Bomberman is actually pretty good. It was decent at launch, only decent, but surprisingly Konami have managed to put out a number of updates, one of which bumped the game to a constant 60fps (up from 30fps at launch) and added a bunch of new playable characters and modes, all for free. Dollface and Grimm are entirely different characters. Preacher is the only one who could conceivably be the same guy, and that's only because he's so insignificant in 2012. Calypso certainly seems totally different. He's a public figure in 2012, but in Black, even Sweet Tooth doesn't know about him until he comes to find him in the asylum. This series always has inconsistencies, and I can overlook them, but in these cases it really seems like the games weren't meant to be connected.

This is gonna get confusing so let's tackle this in release order. 1 is the 10th tournament and takes place in 2005. Every TM so far has been in LA. Calypso stole the demon Black from the devil, Mr. Ash, and has been using Black to get the prizes for the tournament. Given that the prizes are frequently reality warping, we can infer that Calypso stole Black's powers. Also, turns out Charlie Kane is Needles Kane's father.

2 is a year later, and is now worldwide. There was a prequel comic and it is referenced by Minion telling Calypso to go to hell with his sister. Minion is mad at Calypso stealing his powers so clearly Minion is Black and they just fucked up and called him his vehicle name, the same way they call Needles Sweet Tooth a lot of the time. Anyway Calypso killed his family but escaped Hell and then started Twisted Metal eleven years ago. Turns out his daughter, Krista Sparks, didn't die but was rebuilt by the LAPD to get close to him and blow up. Also Marcus Kane thinks everything is a dream and in his ending he wakes up in a hospital surrounded by people from his dream, which I took to be a Wizard of Oz "and you were there" thing. No explicit connection to Sweet Tooth is made, but is a coincidence that Marcus Kane and Needles Kane have the same surname? It wasn't a coincidence that Charlie Kane and Needles Kane had the same surname. We also see blatant inconsistencies like Outlaw being the winner of TM1 according to Outlaw 2's backstory, but Minion is always said to be the winner of TM1 when you get that far.

3 and 4 are inconsequential. 3 has bunch more cases of multiple contestants being said to have won the previous tournaments. 4 is mostly new characters so I guess you can figure Sweet Tooth won 3.

Black is in Needles' mind, and Marcus is aware of this and wants to go back to the "old colorful world." Black, the demon, is also here, trying to kill Calypso. Twisted Metal Lost reveals that Black is the same Black from the main universe, sent by that Calypso to kill this Calypso. Why would that Calypso care if this is only a dream? Also, there's a Charlie Kane here, a dead taxi driver turned into a dead zombie cyborg by his autistic son who is revealed to be Needles' bother. This Calypso wanted Needles to be his successor, but since this kid killed him in the tournament, he'll have to do.

Small Brawl isn't important but would obviously be the original universe. Also Calypso is called Billy Sparks, fitting with the surname given to his daughter in 2.

Head-On is back in the original universe. Perhaps Marcus or Black actually managed to win TM:B and went back to the main universe. Again multiple characters are said to have won TM2. If Krista Sparks wins she wishes that the car accident that killed her and her mom never happened (her mom actually died earlier in the comic but this series was never one for consistency). Then we see her in a coma and Calypso is manipulating her dreams or something and a nurse says that she was in a coma for 12 or 15 years. It's been 12 years since the first Twisted Metal tournament if this takes place right after 2, but 15 if we count 3 and 4. Not that it matters, 3 and 4 aren't important, but I think it's neat that they left it open to count them if you want.

Again in Head-On, Marcus thinks none of this is real. His ending has him wish for "this nightmare to be over," but Calypso says he can't grant it completely. Marcus wakes up in what is seemingly the real world and his Needles personality is now active. Dark Tooth's ending also has Needles explain to Marcus that they are the same person, then they team up to drive Tower Tooth, with Needles in the driver's seat.

2012 explains that Marcus Kane woke up one day and went nuts on everybody as Sweet Tooth, the killer clown. Calypso, a rich guy (so like the main universe) who is publicly known and not believed to have anything to do with Twisted Metal (so unlike the main universe) is eventually seen to have objects from all three universes in his office. Mr. Grimm isn't the Grim Reaper and he isn't a Vietnam vet. Dollface isn't some shy girl who worked for the bad guy from Warhawk, she's a model named Krista Sparks. Why she has the same name as Calypso's daughter, I have no idea. But as for Sweet Tooth, one day Marcus woke up and the Sweet Tooth personality took over. In the previous game, Roadkill's ending had Marcus wake up and the Sweet Tooth personality take over. If anything, 2012 is the "real world," and Calypso was using his powers to incept Marcus into becoming a serial killer, manipulating dreams within dreams until the darkest parts of his personality were coaxed out of him. Black has the ability to dive into dreams so he and Mr. Ash (who is presumably more powerful than Black) may be from the real world. Or maybe they're not real at all and only exist in Marcus's dream, and in the real world Calypso's powers don't come from Black. Maybe 2012 Calypso is the devil himself as 2012 Preacher proposes.

If 2012 was a prequel to Black, it wouldn't fit too well with Marcus having a separate body from Sweet Tooth.

Each sequel has multiple returning characters have their stories say that they won the previous games. Then there are also returning characters who aren't explicitly said to have won, but the way to win is to kill everyone else so if they're returning you kind of have to figure they won. But okay let's ignore that and only focus on the ones who are explicitly said to have won.

In TM2 I think the only player character explicitly said to have won last time is Outlaw, but every time you reach Minion it says Minion won last time, even if you're playing as Outlaw. Also you can play as Minion and get attacked by Minion who won last time.

In III, Warthog's story says Warthog won last time, but Axel's story also says Axel won last time, and Outlaw's story says Outlaw 2 won last time.

Say III isn't canon if you want, but Head-On uses pretty much the same backstories for Axel and Outlaw, implying they both won 2. Twister, Mr. Slamm, and Grasshopper are also all implied to have won 2 in their endings, and in Sweet Tooth's ending they say he's won a bunch of times before, and then he wishes to take over Twisted Metal, which is what happened in the backstory to 4.

Despite all of this, there are still plot threads that develop and continue. It has a continuity, just a very nebulous one. Which makes sense when you realize it's all a dream, even in the main universe.

The only thing that triggers me is Krista Sparks not being Calypso's daughter in 2012. Would have worked to have it so the coma she was in in her Head-On ending was the real world and Calypso's backstory from the comic actually happened in the real world, meaning Mr. Ash and Black are also from there. But I'm pretty sure by 2012 they didn't give a shit about the story and were already pushing to make it an online focus, which is why it ended up underwhelming compared to the other games. I mean fine, the story isn't exactly the main draw of the game, but you gotta give more single player incentive here, or else your game will become a paperweight when there aren't enough people playing online anymore. I've heard Jaffe say that people complaining about 2012 were just complaining about story and ignoring gameplay, but what he doesn't get is that simple things like having different characters driving each car, even with just tiny text endings like in the original game, adds a lot of replayability for very little effort.

He was only reverted to being emo in Advent Children as a directorial decision, because Nomura thought that it would be the "most memorable version of him." (Read: The fujoshis who spend big money like it that way.) They gave him survivor's guilt as an excuse to make him like that again, which was technically a logical, realistic progression, but it was also a redundant-as-shit step backwards in terms of storytelling, which is part of why people hate AC, even though he gets over it at the end.

He's been stuck like that in everyone's minds for over a decade now, because the only game that takes place after AC is Dirge of Cerberus, where you barely see him. His appearances in Kingdom Hearts and Dissidia have been where he's appeared the most, and they also use the emo personality, but might as well be a different character. This is the "Cloud Now" in that image. It's worth noting that Nomura wasn't a director, producer, or writer for VII, he was a character artist. Every use of Cloud since VII has been by a man with a different writing style and taste than the ones who made him in the first place.

They also call Needles Sweet Tooth in a bunch of the games, even though that's the name of the car. In Twisted Metal: Black, Minion is instead driven by Marcus and Black instead drives Manslaughter. Also if the main universe is Marcus's dream and the Black universe is Needles' dream, but 2012 is the real world, then Black being more similar to the real world implies that Needles has more of a grip on reality than Marcus does in the first place. Marcus says that Black is how Needles sees the world, but how he sees the world is a lot closer than the "old colorful world" that Marcus wants to go back to. So the main universe is basically a universe where the dark concepts from the real world (2012) are made more cartoony and tolerable, while also repressed parts of Marcus's mind, like Needles, get to roam free. Black is then Needles remembering the real world.

The question is why the Calypso in Marcus's dream wants to kill the Calypso in Needles' dream. Maybe we don't count Twisted Metal: Lost as canon, but considering it explains what's up with Black's story in Twisted Metal Black, we might as well. And how is Calypso from 2012 connected? Are any two of them the same guy? It would make sense for them all to be the same guy except one wants to kill another so nevermind. But 2012 Calypso has trophies from all three universes. Maybe Marcus's dream Calypso is only another aspect of Marcus's personality and Needles' dream Calypso is only a part of Needles' personality, and Marcus wants to stop Needles from gaining more power over their mind as a whole and making them wake up. This is why I consider TM3/4 and TMB separate timelines, because both "canons" start off a different story that contradict the one from TM1/2/SB/HO. That said none of it matters since Jaffe is too stupid to be consistent even with names, especially when you consider that Mr. Ash (aka actual satan) created both Black and Minion. In addition, it is stated in TMB that rumor has it Black actually comes from a parallel universe where a different, more colorful Calypso wants to use Black to murder his darker twin, pointing again at a timeline canon rather than just dreams.

Or we can just go with Marcus' canon where his schizophrenia helps him realize that none of the games are real and every single character is in a 25+ year old coma from an intersection pileup accident in the real, normal world. Calypso and his entire family were also caught in the accident, with him being the only one managing to escape death by bamboozling Minion and stealing his powers. Calypso is the only guy who's awake out there now, shoving all the contestants into an endless coma nightmare of consecutive Twisted Metal contests that change wildly in theme in every single game so none of them (not even the player) will get a deja vu and realize where they are, and thus wish to wake up. Marcus' schizophrenia is represented by Needles Kane, and the reason why he's "part" of him ("I will be the man who hides under your bed, in your closet, in your mind.). Possibly because he hit his head so hard in the pileup accident that it essentially bonked the schizo out of him, making him a bit more sane - sane enough to realize, in almost every game, that he, and everyone else, is in a coma. Meanwhile, Mr. Ash is sending demons like Black and Minion to drag him back to hell.

It's not. They just fuck up and call drivers by their cars' names all the time. They do the same with Sweet Tooth a lot, so much so that by 2012 they don't call him Needles at all.

Twisted Metal (1995) establishes that Black is the name of the demon Calypso uses to collect his prizes. Given that his prizes include shooting a dude into space and sending people back in time, we can take this as shorthand for "Calypso gets his powers from Black." Also for the record, they never say who drives Minion in this game. The live action cutscenes had some militia group steal a CIA tank or something, but these aren't canon. Either way, drivers change all the time in this series, and in TM2 Minion does have a driver and it's not the ones from the non-canon live action cutscenes.

Twisted Metal 2 establishes that the driver of Minion is a demon who is angry at Calypso for stealing his powers. They call him Minion but it's clear this is a case of them just fucking up and calling the driver by the car's name, because his story obviously matches Black's.

TM:B is 100% a different timeline. 3/4 might as well be considered one but they're not even really relevant enough to warrant being relegated to a different timeline. They're simply not important.

That other story you listed kinda works on its own but I don't think its as fulfilling as the actual story given. Discards a lot of the comic which is a cool backstory for Calypso, and discarding Marcus's entire story from Black and Head-On, which his story from 2 fits well with anyway.

Because Marcus's role in the story works best by being the most super secret thing ever, so naturally he's the last character unlocked, so he should be the best character, and the best character should be Minion. Also you can justify it by saying he's more powerful because he's not even from this universe, he's a bigger part of Sweet Tooth's mind, in fact he's the "real" one.

Also, Agent Stone (the name of TM1 and Small Brawl's Crimson Fury's driver) drives Outlaw here, for some reason. And his story is the same as the original Roadkill from Twisted Metal 1, Captain Spears. I always found that kinda weird. But again, whatever. Those two characters have some of the coolest stories in the original series, too. But they aren't the stories that are important to the overall worldbuilding, so whatever. Different universe so names can get mixed up.

Also Black's Roadkill has a really cool story, and it matches up with Roadkill being a beat up old car.

And Needles is the one to kill Axel's wife.
