The correct thing to do would have been at the end of Mist of Panderia, where the horde army has been entirely destroyed and the leadership overthrown, to dismantle the horde. There is no more horde, each of the races of the Horde are given a voice in the alliance.

You could create an infinite amount of interesting stories with that decision. Alliance members furious that their enemies have been given 'equal' standing after everything. Former horde members claiming that they are second class citizens. You could even make the reputation system in the game worth a shit by making it more connected to the PvP in the world than just the current Red/Blue teams. But that would involve development time not being thrown down the Raid hole, and blizzard can't have that.

The lore was kind of a meme in TBC, they tried but it was mostly about gameplay and that was fine. It was alright in Classic, nothing too major except kel'thuzad being a boss at the very end of classic. It was original and fun. TBC is bad lorewise there's no real reason to fight vashj, and the reasons for fighting kael aren't very strong either. Mount hyjal was put in it because the devs thought it would be fun (it was). There was no real reason to kill Illidan besides him having pissed off a bunch of Naaru. Stopping kil'jaeden did make sense lorewise but almost nobody did that raid since it was tuned very harshly (too difficult).

I feel the tipping point of entire WoW was middle of Wrath when they released that raid with only bosses, trial of the crusader it was called I thought. It killed off progression raiding (that is, you first needed to do one raid tier before the next one), introduced multiple difficulties for raids (making the default difficulty braindead easy) the subsequent patch introduced dungeon finder which killed server based groups (and the friend making process that came from it).

Then in cataclysm, I don't even know what the story was about. A bunch of old villains returned and something with dragons that is never explained in the game. Mists had lolpandas, was bad lorewise. Towards the end it was all about horde vs alliance and how much of a baddie Garrosh was for wanting to use the remnants of the power of an old god to finally tip the scale against the alliance. It was so badly written that horde players had to revolt against garrosh, which realistically would've meant that the horde would've been destroyed because they would be so weak the alliance could crush them.

So the entire expansion doesn't really make sense considering what happened in mists of pandaria.

I've said it before, I'll say it again. WoW was never good, ever.

WoW had the potential to be good. It was able to release in a state where people were first getting internet and finding out what MMO's were, and was put out in an actual playable state (unlike that horrific trash Everquest where it could take 10 minutes to heal when you start a new character). What WoW had was a confluence of events.

1) WoW was easier to start playing than Everquest, and had things resembling quality of life improvements.

2) WoW was a subscription game back when people weren't familiar with it and had more money/time to spend.

3) Blizzard had a massive reputation for having the best post-release support for products in the industry.

As such while the game was never 'good' (and if you want to argue this I will simply point you to 8 maximum debuffs, and 144 damage lacerate as the ultimate survival talent to prove you are simply using rose colored glasses) it had the inherent promise of becoming better.

From release and through WotLK that promise was being realized in the form of refining and balancing classes, combat and controls. Even though most of these improvements happened to make the game better for everyone, the bitter black pill that killed WoW was already apparent even in Vanilla. It was the slavish devotion to raids and the 'progression' treadmill that ultimately destroyed the game. Not that a few raids here or there would have done the job, but the fact that raiding was the only thing the developers put money behind for years.

"Trade" in the biggest MMO in the world is just an auction house that relies on 3rd party programs to use. "Crafting" is just a fetch quest system that means nothing. Reputations are just a grind that hides 'Please Collect 20,000 bear testicles' with 1000 'collect 20 bear testicles' turn in for each new expansion. There is 0 character customization or specialization and what used to exist for this has actually been removed. Social interactions are still done via slash commands and the game has taken every step to remove the need to communicate with other players.

What has all of this been for? A 5th-9th iteration of 'raid progression philosophy' to give players a larger stat so they can go to the next raid, eventually having the stats just lowered again so they can repeat the process. Streamlining of classes so you can simply have a raid leader click 'go' and everyone has their buffs regardless of party composition?

And the worst part of this? The fact that Blizzard had to justify only ever making anything for raiders by shoving every other player in the game into raids. I never liked raiding, and unlike a lot of Blizzard fans I was smart enough to simply stop paying money when I realized it was never going to flesh out the exploration, NPC interaction, trade, world persistence or player impact. Tons of people who would rather be out there building a home, or a business, or any number of activities are instead shitting up raids. Because a dedicated group of sock poopers want to feel like they have big dicks by getting 'realm first' in something that hasn't been a competition in five years.

High level WoW in vanilla and a bit in BC at least had some aspects of a sandbox, and yes, those aspects were not only uncultivated but removed with apparent malice. Blizzard actively stopped listening to its fans in Wrath or somewhere around there and just casualized it in hopes of greater revenue. Now you're stuck with a game that a 80 year old can play fine due to dumbing down. The graphics didn't age well either, it looks pretty bad.

The lore, well Blizzard got bipolar with the lore and rewritten a lot (maybe even most?) of it. It also contradicts each other depending on the expansion. Also some things that happened are huge gaps in the lore themselves. For example at the end of pandaria Garrosh seemed to be gaining an edge and the upper hand vs the alliance. Then some horde led revolution killed off the capital (orgrimmar) + garrosh his army and whatever army the horde had safe for the forsaken. At that point the Alliance could have easily crushed whatever remained of the horde and lorewise that is what should have happened (and why nobody would even want to follow through with some kind of revolution). So it's terrible writing, all of pandaria has had terrible writing and lore.

I didn't even follow cataclysm, not even sure what the expansion was all about besides some mad dragon.

Well it sucks.

It actually gained traction as esport during TBC, and that was when 2v2 was an actual popular playing mode that was frequently played. Blizzard completely neglected it and discouraged supporting it. And basically after wrath 0 effort was done to balance pvp in any way shape or form. Legion PvP was terrible, outright garbage. It was literally one of the worst pvp I've ever seen in a MMO. Why was it terrible?

1 Gameplay: you were just doing a PvE rotation on someone but with maybe 1 CC ability thrown into it. 2: positioning has been deleted, melee has 100% uptime and most of the positioning stuff has been made irrelevant. 3: classes aren't fun which kind of ties into 1. 4 there is 0 customization going on in pvp, previously you could optimize stats in such a way that you could create unique builds and setups that worked. Not anymore.

Also Blizzard admitted that they stopped balancing 2v2 in Cataclysm since it took too much effort and would focus on 3v3. 3v3 has never been balanced, often even more unbalanced than 2v2 used to be lol. 3v3 is such a no fun mode as well compared to 2s.

Every game Blizzard seems to push for esports ends up just being bad at it. The only real esports games they had going for them were warcraft 3 and starcraft Brood War and it wasn't even made for esports but the games just had a fun and deep pvp mode.
