What do you do when you get interested in a game's story but don't like the gameplay? Do you spoil yourself by watching a longplay or do you try to actually play it, even though it's not your type of genre?

8084c9 No.15229951

Isn't that what most people say about Drakengard? It's a great and weird story, but the gameplay is shit?

I say even if you don't care for the gameplay, slog through it. You'll have been much more satisfied knowing you earned the right to experience the story instead of just watching it on Youtube.

True, I've had this though. I've watched a longplay of a game before and felt a bit sad that I didn't play through myself.

I like to do as much exploration as I can, figure things out for myself. The big one is games that are open to interpretation, there's no right or wrong answer, but there are entire communities who will dictate and tell you what the right answer is.

Your take on Dark Souls for example, is probably drastically different than mine. I don't read wikis for story/lore to see what a community of people have decided is the truth, I instead delve into things and decide for myself.

Most games, you won't get the whole story by watching or reading someone else's playthrough. But if the game is really any good, watching someone else's run won't spoil yours. You can go back and play it afterward and still get something new out of it.

If I'm already playing the game and get interested in the games story then I usually just slog through the game to the end.

More often than not though I look up a "full story" video on youtube and watch that so I don't even have to attempt to play the game. An example being the new Soy of Boy, knew the gameplay was gonna be shit but I wanted to see how much they fucked up the story and I aint toutching the game with a 10 foot barge pole so I watch a "full cutscenes" video skipping through most of it so I can say "yep its shit" and not waste my money or any more than 10-20 minuites of my time.

Nigger what are you trying to say? If a game has bad gameplay, then it's shit, not worth playing, and certainly not worth seeing a faggoty "story" since games are not a story telling medium. If it has gameplay I don't like then I brush up on what that gameplay is before hand, and usually don't even bother playing at all if I know it's not a genre of game I like.

If a game has bad gameplay, it's a bad fucking game period.

Of course there is always the chance that you could like a game, so I would advise at least giving it a try, even if it's not a genre you usually enjoy. But if after giving it a try it's still not fun, then move on.

My only real problem with "interactive stories" and walking simulators and shit like that is that they try to market those as games when they clearly aren't and don't even try to be if they do try that's all the sadder. No. None of that.

I prefer examples that are, of course gameplay first, but also complement it well with a good story, no matter how simple or complex, as long as it carries a message at the end.

Examples like Ace Combat, Shadow Tactics or Megaman X. They all have great gameplay, but they also have stories carrying them through; like an extra to remember the characters and the world by.

Simply calling someone contrarian is not an argument.

I like the stories in many video games, but not enough that I would play those games just for the story. In the time it would take to watch someone else play the game, I could read or watch a much better story in a medium that is made for it.

On the other hand, I like really getting into the stories of games that seemingly do not focus on story, but when games do focus on story, to the degree that it becomes a selling point or something the fans say is a major factor in the game, 100% of the time it's because the game is made by some faggots who would rather make a movie but know their garbage can't cut it in a medium with anything but bottom of the barrel standards when it comes to story, so they make a video game instead.

>>15230883

Mega Man Classic has a better story than Mega Man X on account of not being tryhard melodramatic garbage. People just don't know about it because instead of shoving text boxes in your face and having horribly done anime cutscenes, you actually have to read the manuals, and a lot of those manuals were butchered by western (((localizers))).

> Do you spoil yourself by watching a longplay or do you try to actually play it, even though it's not your type of genre?

Depends on the game. For most of these cases I will suffer through to the ending, sometimes using cheats and/or trainers to help me get by quicker.

But for some yeah, I will just watch a longplay. Did this with MGS4 and Alien: Isolation. Don't regret it.

Most point and click adventure games of the 90's basically did everything modern walking sims aim to do, but with something actually resembling gameplay.

It's nothing "new". I actually don't mind playing "interactive stories" myself, but most of the indie shit doesn't even have any good story to put out and the graphics are reduced to a bunch of flat-shaded triangles.

This is 100% truth

I think the problem isn't that people are using the medium to make those things, that could be a market of it's own if they were actually good like VNs, no one expects gameplay from a VN, they're their own thing, the problem is that they're making shitty games while trying to sell them as something more than that.

e40fd0 No.15232329

of course its going to depends on how much i dont like the gameplay. not every game is a big winner so it would have to be extremely boring for me to just drop it when im enjoying the story.

i cant even think of a time this has happened but i have dropped games that were absolutely no fun before. maybe im not as invested in stories as i think, or i just drop un fun games before i have a chance to grow interested in the story. but i certainly do enjoy some of them.

nowadays people have the luxuries of youtube and whatnot if they just want to see the story. sometimes i check out videos when i want to see alternative outcomes for games with branching paths that i have no intention of pursuing.

I feel like people here are a bit too black and white on the matter. I think it's sad but I also fully understand why.

I think one of the big things that endears or breaks a mediocre game for me is the intent. Was the game trying to simply be pretentious garbage and not actually a game? Or did the devs actually try and just sorta flounder? I think even a shitty game you can detect if it was made genuinely with love or not. I've played a lot of mediocre games in the past that I still enjoyed because there was an attempt, inspiration, and love put into them.

I prefer a mediocre game with soul, than a "by the numbers good" game that's soulless. Though obviously what is best is a good game with soul.

Developers intent means fuck all. If a game comes out as shit, it's shit. No relativistic art school dropout muh soul bullshit makes a game worth playing. Even if it does, how much someone will put with a game's technical flaws or broken mechanics varies from person to person.

6ca0b0 No.15233078

To remove some of the blanket-case opinion slinging, how about some actual examples? What games has anyone played where they felt satisfied after finishing it, even though it wasn't actually very good? There's no point in discussing the concept alone, because every game has it's own reasons to appeal to people. Everyone has at least a few games that they know aren't actually that great, but they still like them for some reason regardless.

338c54 No.15233084

Considering that games are the best medium for story telling (for me, at least), it would be an absolute shame to lose a good story to shit gameplay, but if a game is not fun to play, it's not fun to play, point blank. I think that by that point, if the game is that unenjoyable, I simply will not care about the story anymore, as the two fuel each other quite well.

41f7ed No.15233094

>>15233066

>Even if it does, how much someone will put with a game's technical flaws or broken mechanics varies from person to person.

No fucking shit, but my whole post was from my opinion. No shit it's different for other people.

And I didn't say a shit game with soul is good, I said it's preferable to a passable one without soul. But I would argue that games with soul will in most cases be mediocre. If a game is able to compel you with its themes or concepts or whatever you've likely been playing it long enough to determine you can endure the gameplay to see it to the end. If the gameplay is really unbearable for a person they would probably drop it before it would really ne able to engage you on any level.

>>15233078

The first Ecco the Dolphin. The gameplay isn't necessarily bad, but it's kinda buggy and intentionally made with a lot of beginner traps in mind. However the controls are fun and the story, music and setting are interesting and incredibly unique. If it wasn't for those elements the game would be completely forgotten. Thankfully it didn't and got a sequel that fixed the problems of the original.

Not always. It's one of my favorite games for doing this so well and having such a neat environment to run around in and learn about. The gameplay isn't bad in it, but it certainly is not king in every computer game. That said, truly bad gameplay can ruin any game just as ultraliberal pozz does.
