edf352 No.15228205

I've noticed lately that a lot of games I've been playing feel more or less interchangeable, none really leave a lasting impression. I started wondering if I still have the same interest in games I used to have and started trying to remember the last game I played that really hooked me in. To be honest, I can't really remember. If I had to guess, I'd say the KOTOR series when I was younger.

So I thought I'd pose the question to /v/: what's the last game you played that really sucked you in, that made you forget about time, that occupied your thoughts and stayed I with you even after you finished it?

Don't replay KOTOR series. It doesn't hold up at all and also you begin to recognize the leftist propaganda undertones.

Fuck I'd have to say Stella Glow and Stalker.

I on;y discovered Iji after someone posted about the 1.7 update, so I was very late in playing it. But I really got into it fast and didn't stop until I found everything. Not up for taking on Ultimortal Max-charge Tor, though.

Not sure where to start since I only play Japanese games and they never let me down *tips kimono*.

>ARPGs

Nioh, Dark Souls and Bloodborne are incredibly addictive and it's fun to play with different builds.

And there was Nier Automata which was like a mix between hacknslash and bullethell kind of and it had replay value, because multiple endings.

>Action Adventures

LoZ Breath of the Wild completely sucked me in, but sadly it doesn't have much replay value and all the secrets are not worth the time.

>JRPGs

I've played Summon Knight 1 & 2 recently and it was as good as people claimed. It's like a mix between your typical top down RPG mixed with side scrolling battle system and some minor dating sim elements. Also, it has semen demons.

>I started wondering if I still have the same interest in games I used to have

Maybe you just need to do other stuff besides gaming or what I usually do is play retro stuff whenever I'm "burned out".

Metal Gear Solid 4. It's literally everything a MG fan wants, combining plotlines from every entry in a consistently cheesy way. Never before have I played a game made exclusively for fans of all previous entries. I completely understand the hate for extremely long cutscenes, but this is the only game where it would've worked. It's certainly not good, but it is irreplaceable as the end of the series, even if the it should've ended after 2, or after 3.

d5b936 No.15228505

Forgot to add: Xanadu Next. The mechanics don't really impress, but there's a lot of charm in the atmosphere. The game's progression brings you back to earlier areas, and thus gives you options to get around the world. It uses the connected map to its advantage, giving you a sense of where everything is laid out.

While the only other Falcom game I've played is Ys 1, Xanadu Next really left an impression on me in terms of exploration and progression.

Greedy devs want to chase trends instead of innovate or explore. Zenimax seems to be trying (Prey 3 as a SS2 clone, Doom 4 as a faster FPS) but they all come out bland and uninspired.

>>15228354

>Breath of the Wild

That game didn't do anything for me. Something is just not fun about the whole game, either I wasn't being challenged enough or I wasn't given enough variety. I can appreciate the design of the game, but I think it needed an extra year of development.

Personally, Link's Awakening and Minish Cap were more memorable and engaging for me.

Innovating even slightly doesn't pay off a lot of times anymore. Call of duty is a good example. That space game one tried to do a new movement system and a single player with fighter combat as well as a mission hub thing, and it failed despite undeniably being the most innovative cod game. I think it might be that mainstream audiences don't really want something that's too different from what they're used to

Jedi Outcast II with g_saberrealisticcombat set to 9 (merely touching a saber is lethal for you and enemies). Nothing like activating speed and running through a room murdering everone. When it ends, all their arms fall off.

Skyrim: Special Edition.

Rain World, Brigador, and Darkwood.

Started another playthrough of Digimon World 1.

That game never ceases to suck me right in. The absolute lack of handholding, the mysterious and vast world, the unique blend of technology and nature, the way you raise your partner to greater heights and then start back from the beginning, the comfy atmosphere as you recruit more and more digimon to the city and see it grow.

It amazes me in nearly all respects. I only wish Redigitize and New Order had kept that special something that made the first title so appealing. It may be janky and a bit frustrating when you first play it but this game is worth seeing through to the end.

d5b936 No.15228717

>>15228628

I think they're trying to innovate where they don't need to be. CoD didn't really need more fans, so the innovation would only be met with dissatisfaction. Besides, innovation doesn't necessarily mean good design, just something new/different. The fans don't want something different, and the devs can't make it good, so the game doesn't sell.

Even so, I'm sure it gave a lasting impression to the few people who played the singleplayer. A memorable experience is not always going to be for everyone (MGS4 is only for fans of the series, a small subset of consumers)

I've only played 3 partially as a child. Any tips for playing 1 for the first time?

Hollow Knight. I don't know how the additional content has changed the game, but getting lost in the various zones and wandering around plus falling into the Deepnest completely by surprise was a huge breath of fresh air. I wandered for hours with no annoying tutorial NPCs or headphone-wearing danger hairs telling me what to do. Hornet was cute.

Of course, the game's combat is way too simple for its own good, and another couple of tutorial NPCs would have been fine if there had been more mechanics, but overall I'm very happy with the ~50 hours I spent playing it.

Try getting 1 or 2 stats up high to get a good champion, focus on health and attack for easy greymon/tyrannomon for instance. Also weight is important for digivolving, so make sure you feed them and win digimon battles to increase that.

Also you should try to beat palmon ASAP at the bottom of native forest. She upgrades the meat garden and is pretty essential.

Other than that just faff about and experiment to find cool stuff. The translation is very fucky but most things aren't too hard to figure out.

It's also good practice to write down the stats you had when you get a good champion so you can replicate later.

Dwarf Fortress and before that Factorio. I really think you are looking for games in the wrong places, sure everything sucks but there still good games being made.

All western games are like that. They are all shit, "created" by leftist subhumans. Anything made by leftists is of low quality and full of flaws.

Both true.

They were leftist propaganda, and not games.

It really feels like happening upon bosses and things instead of following the intended path, first time I've felt that since Super Metroid. And the combat is better simple, since the pins have a more obvious effect on performance. Besides, combat is more about moving around, which is a majority of the upgrades.

>>15228843

Thanks, I'll keep it saved. I like games that let you experiment, so good to know DW1 rewards that.
