Old News, but Valve recently updated Dota 2 to have you able to see the Item before you buy the loot box.
This only applies to the Netherlands (due to regulations) and randomizes the loot boxes next contents every time you open it.
This update really reminded myself of how Fortnite has it's skins on a day by day reel to create artificial scarcity.
And Fortnite's model even further reminds myself of how Overwatch and R6 Seige handle their seasonal skins.
I hate to be a black-pill but I think anyone who thought government regulation was going to chase away over priced items and micro-transactions needs to take a serious look at things. Instead of locking the appealing skins behind percentage values, it looks like the future will be seasonal skins, ala: Fortnite and Overwatch. It's not gambling, and would be fair game under most western countries laws.
I think the only reason Valve had such success with loot crates in the first place was because they had the infrastructure to crate a item marketplace. Because of this people could establish a tangible value for everything that could be obtained through loot boxes. Other companies may try to create networks to collect connect users (I.e. Uplay) but none of them have the clout to form player to player financial networks like Valve does. In fact, most companies have been extremely hesitant to integrate in game items into valves "item marketplace". This leads me to believe that the next major pivot from the AAA studios will be creating systems strictly seasonal Items and cosmetics. Essentially making the gamble about whether or not you will see the skin again rather than if you will find it when you open a box.
How could we stop this other than "vote with your wallet"?

I think it actually has the opposite affect. A parent would be much more inclined to buy if it was "Mommy, I need the skin before it is gone mommy!" and less if it was a conventional store. If your laying out $20+ for each time you buy a skin and a dance, then most parents would just tell them to save up for it themselves or wait until their birthday. It's harder to tell them to wait when the kid is having a fit about the skin disappearing in 24-hours.
Kids are impulsive by nature, and the Fornite's store is naturally impulsive by being seasonal. The barrier to entry is free, and parents are given the shaft. A truly intoxicating set up. I wish we could put a name on the mind behind it.

Also people don't have to start throwing mud now as I don't think things have reached that point yet. I think if things continue on their current trajectory then the opportunity to meme Epic as a shit company might arise in the fall or spring of next year. We could also do something even better by memeing Tencent as a shit company instead. I'm going to keep a eye out for any disruptions that might upset the fortnite community and see if they can be tied to Tencent in anyway.
