So, I've been playing on this civcraft server for quite a while now. It lets players build their own nations, and has modified mine-craft to encourage this. It's a lot of fun despite it being filled of redditors, mods are cool with anons being on tho. It really depends on the version.
There's a cool "waystones mod" that add world generated ways of fast travelling from village to village via teleportation. It only features world generated stones in 1.12, tho, otherwise you'll need to manually craft and place them.
Grimoire of Gaia is fucking awesome but the mobs are fucking vicious, if you don't have some OP modded gear they'll make exploring impossible. I compiled a "balanced" version of it for 1.12 where they don't have retarded stats and all the daylight mobs are passive, if anyone's interested Too bad it doesn't work with Biomes o Plenty and the like.
Also, Biomes o Plenty and RTG make the world beautiful as fuck, but they sometimes hate each other and RTG isn't available for 1.12.

1.12.2 is horrendously shit, and modpacks for it practically require you to have database grade hardware, one that I've encountered will seriously not start up if you allocate less than 7gb of ram to it and 8gb is recommended

it's shaders, you can use shaders regardless of server because it's only used for client-side rendering
shaders are usually highly configurable too if you can understand them, I had a modpack years ago that I modified shader files to include certain blocks and entities, the one I used then made grass/leaves wave like there was wind but grass and leaves from mods weren't supported so it took some manual configuration
