How do you guys play arcade games with credit system? Do you limit yourself to certain amount of credits or judge by the score how well you performed?
Or just cheat your way through with 99 continues?

A lot of these games when they were ported to consoles there was a default value for credits. Cotton 2 comes to mind which defaults to 3 credits, you can have as many as 9, and for each credit you have 3 lives. If these default values don't exist somewhere out there I think 3 is actually a good number before you must restart, other games often had 3 continues along with a number of lives. The idea is to work to a point where you can 1CC it.

Honestly if i never stop playing till the end, it starts feeling too cheesy. Especially if its a really challenging bullet hell. Also score resets every death, so that also prevents me from maxing it out.
>>15217530
Yeah, that sounds plausible, i'l try limiting myself to 3 continues. Its all about repeating the game to git gud at it anyway.
>1CC
So this is what this challenge meant for touhou stuff, good to know.

I find that forcing yourself to a 1CC standard immediately can result in burn out. I've seen a few others say it and it rang true with me, when you strive for perfect play in a game it becomes a tedious experience of repeating the same segments, and ultimately relying on under-developed muscle memory which results in perpetual failure and ultimately burn out. If you make a mistake, keep going and see how far you can get in your existing session. You'll feel more rewarded too as you find yourself progressing just a little farther than your previous run.
What I'm saying is, work towards 1CC but don't let it be the sole reason you play. Let it be a goal.

This tbh. It is especially true for rhythm games as well. You will get better if you allow yourself to continue or disable fail states rather then failing at the same part over and over.

I managed to clear this with one credit a few years back in a real cabinet, something I have noticed on YT let's plays of this game is how people don't seem to know but the default setting in the arcade gives you a second run if you clear it once, said second run has an amped up difficulty with some mixed or harder enemy patterns.
At first I thought it was a matter of setting the machine to the highest difficulty, but nope, if you want to see all that you have to clear it and keep playing.

A lot of arcade games feature such second loops with increased difficulty and revamped enemy patterns, just to give something extra for those who want to keep playing. The fact that you have to play through the entire game twice makes second loops even more terrifying, but they're a neat addition when one loop is like around 20 or 25 minutes long. Konami games tend to loop infinitely, but then they get incredibly bullshit on later loops

In the arcades the most common input method is a joystick anyways.

When I first start playing an arcade game, I usually just see how far I can get on one credit and feed afterwards depending on how much I like the game. I keep doing this for a while, and if there's a particular section I'm having trouble with I'll drop a savestate there to practice it until I can reliably pass it. After enough runs when I'm comfortable enough with the game I'll try to 1cc it and practice the sections I can't do consistently enough yet.

I'm bad at videogames but try to not cheese through a game. I can usually reach the third stage boss or fourth stage in easier shmups like Batsugun and CAVE games like Mushihime-sama and the ESP series using a single credit.

I use arrow keys + VCX, FDS, ZA (for buttons 1-3, 4-6, 7, 8) as default layout in MAME and it works. The "correct" layout with WASD for directions and UIOP etc. for buttons feels weird after all these years.

That's an analog stick and would do fuckall since arcade uses digital sticks with four microswitches for the cardinal directions. It's also missing tactile feedback unless you can somehow program it to give a Force Feedback response for when an axis' actuation point is reached.

I usually credit feed until I can beat the game on one credit. Though when I get to the point where I'm beating a game on 2 or 3 credits, I usually just restart in frustration when I die unless I'm at the final boss and need some practice or something.

Loops have always been a shit tier mechanic. They're not a "gift", they're a curse for high-level players who have to slog though 20 minutes of boring shit they no longer derive any challenge from in order to get to the challenging part of the game they're actually interested in. Every single game with multiple loops that has ever existed would be better off if the loops were simply difficulty settings.

Okay, I take that back. There is at least one game I can think of that actually handles looping well, because the loops themselves are short, and it's basically a different game across 3 different loops. I just wish the final stage wasn't the same every time.

This is legit the most comfy layout for playing on a keyboard.
I always hated how japanese use keyboard's directional buttons for their games, and force you to use Z, X, C for action buttons, either ending up crossing your hands or controlling the movement with right hand which is awkward as fuck.

The problem with arcade games like those is that they're deisgned to be unfair so you spend more money. I'd rather play a game that wasn't designed that way instead, because a lot of the time the only way to clear arcade games on one credit is to trial-and-error it, memorizing exactly where the cheap shots are going to happen. That's no fun in my opinion.
2dfc7b No.15220627
>>15220610
In fact most of the most popular arcade games are very fair. You see, anon, people don't keep putting money into games they don't feel are fair. An arcade game that is too unfair doesn't make the operator money and consequently is removed rather quickly.
415e45 No.15220652
The people who get good quickly either use credit feeding or save states. You need practice in the areas you don't know, and those are the quickest ways to get it. Finishing the game through continues is not shameful because it isn't the same sort of accomplishment and some games don't even allow you the good end for it.

I have a change jar with a slit in the lid. Everytime I use a credit in an arcade game, I drop in .25c. If I run out of change, I stop playing the game. When I get enough money in the change jar, I take it to the bank and get it exchanged for bills which I use to buy a new arcade game.
773ec6 No.15221156
>>15220627
Most arcade games had a jew-slider/dipswitch on the board that allowed the buyer to custom set parameters for the game. That way they could tailor the "fairness" of the game according to profitability.

What team were you using and were you the guy in the last shmup thread talking about batrider?
>>15221064
They take time to get good at so that scares away most people and they're old and not heavily marketed so the casual audience is definitely not going to give them a try. On top of that the casual audience isn't going to take time to learn how to setup an emulator so that shrinks the arcade audience even further. Sure they are unfair at parts but they are possible to 1cc and you feel even better going through a challenge that you really had to put effort against instead of modern games that just let you stroll through them. Almost every good game that is made is gonna have a challenge to it and arcade games just do it more.
That's my two cents on that.
